I really do think that would turn the tables for MS. I'm interested in an X1, but the idea that I still have to pay $60 just to pay online is a turn off. At least with PS+ Sony lets you play latest games at no additional cost. You also get discounts and cool features like share play. Imagine if MS came out of no where and offered Live for free? That would teach the dirty rotten cows in this forum to doubt MS. What do you think, SW? Good idea?

"Play games at no additional cost." Paying for ps+ is an additional cost no way on how you spin it.

Now that Playstation has implemented online multiplayer fees with PS4, there's less pressure on Microsoft to drop their fees. And if the $60 cost on Xone is a turn off for you, is this not the same with PS4?

huh? you can play the latest games free? really? cause its mostly just indies on both sides. and both have given newer indie titles since the system is new so there aren't even 3-4 year old games to give out. XBL and PSN+ both give discounts as well and you earn more rewards points with XBL gold which get converted to money in your account. Shareplay also isn't a PS+ requirement BTW only if you play MP. if your playing a Single player game, PS+ isn't needed for shareplay. Its a terrible idea, why would MS who has a better online service give it away for free? so they can't afford to keep it going good and it winds up being like PSN? the reason PSN is bad is becuase sony hasn't had the revenue. MS has invested billions in building data centers for live, hell they even just opened a brand new one in Australia last month. You know what i think? I think some people need to fact check and use their brains before hitting the submit post button

That will never happen and XBL offers the same things PS+ offers. Besides Play Share which is still faulty because of the streaming. XBL is also a more stable online service compared to PSN. How many stability updates did Sony release for the PS4 this year? Microsoft is making a decent profit from XBL and more gamers are signing up for it, so it's unlikely it will go anywhere anytime soon.

How is shareplay a cool feature?

Its limited to 60 minutes.
Its not only dependent on your own internet connection, but your friends as well.
No save support
No trophy support
Resolution is capped at 720p (Oh noez how will cows cope) and will dip depending on you connection

Even Sony don't sound too confident in it

""We are not going to [disclose a minimum speed] because if we say, for example, you need at least a 3MB speed, I cannot guarantee if it works [even if they have that speed]," SCEE product planning manager Kazuhiro Yanase explained to VideoGamer.com. "The internet environment is really different user by user. For example, some users will be using a LAN cable, some users will be using Wi-Fi, sometimes you use the microwave in your house. Something like that. It's very difficult for us to guarantee you can use Share Play if you have [a certain] speed. That's the reason why we are not going to disclose any specific number. But again, this doesn't require any super-fast broadband."

LOL It sounds about as useful as PS Home.

Microsoft is first and foremost a business. Don't expect free XBL anytime soon.

They use these fees to make everything run like it should unlike PSN that is a free service that suddenly started charging people.

I pay the full $60 every year because I tell Microsoft to "TAKE MY MONEY!!!!!" and I do it with a smile.

Thank you Phil.

You get discounts and "free" games with xbox live gold too, so I'm not sure what TC's talking about.

Both sony and M$ should drop their sub fees. I refuse to pay for ethir on principle. It's part of the reason I switched to PC.

First of all, if you are paying $60 a year for Xbox Live, you are doing it wrong. I've been subscribed for 9 years and I have never paid more than $40 a year for it. There are plenty of deals throughout the year on Xbox Live and I only ever pay between $30 to $40 for it.

Secondly, no, I don't think Xbox Live should be free. The fee is the reason that Xbox Live has always been the best online service. Charging a fee forces them to uphold a high standard of quality for the service, so people will keep paying money for it. If it was free, it would be crappy like the PS3 and Nintendo's online services.

I'm willing to place a bet that MS will follow sony and put something a kin to this for the X1 in the future, especially if it takes off.

You do get more out of it if you own a PS3 and Vita as well. Still, for the first year, I was happy with getting Velocity 2X, Resogun, Towerfall and Strider. Here is a full list for PS4, PS3, and Vita

"Play games at no additional cost." Paying for ps+ is an additional cost no way on how you spin it.

Not just that, but I get GWG and discounts every month. TC needs to educate himself to what live Gold is at this point.

At least with PS+ Sony lets you play latest games at no additional cost.

Eh? I bought the PS4 at launch, name all the "latest games" i got with PS+, cos they've been pants.

You do get more out of it if you own a PS3 and Vita as well. Still, for the first year, I was happy with getting Velocity 2X, Resogun, Towerfall and Strider. Here is a full list just for PS4:

Both Sony and MS should get rid of paying for online.

Because as we all know, handshakes, hellos, and forum praise pay the salaries in a corporation.

Don't care, I use PC for online play. But yeah the idea of paying a subscription fee for multiplayer access is not appealing.

Yes and no. No they should keep the XBLG fee, but they should include in each game a 3 or month voucher for XBLG, and 2 weeks or 1 month for each digital arcade title (depending on price). This will help up the attach rate for each game they sell and promote new game sales over used. When you think about it, the Xbox 360 and PS3 achieved attach rates of about 10 games per console. Using this strategy, MS could double that attach rate as people will continue buying new games to keep their XBLG up. This will have other added effects, such as increased publisher support, they respond to things like userbase that actually buys games for their system, and new copies to boot.

What they give up in subscription fees they can make up for in royalties.

Thing is people dont have a problem paying for the subscription... That in itself is a problem, but its not something you can change. People may not like the fee for each service, but they dont seem to have a problem paying for it.

No chance of this ever happening ever. But to answer the question Should Microsoft get rid of the Xbox live fee? NO this is why Microsoft Xbox brand has had the best on-line multiplayer since 2002.

It costs money to keep game servers up and running. While Sony did go with free on-line MP with Playstation 3. Xbox live is better even with the $50.00 yearly fee.

So no keep the fee. If it means better servers. Sony has begun charging for on-line play for PS4 Servers cost money to keep running. While free for both Xbox live and PS4 would be nice. It is not practical.

MS is doing great work with their service. Sony doesn't. But it would be great if they both removed the fee. On the otherhand it wouldn't be as great as it is now on XBLIVE.

Both sony and M$ should drop their sub fees. I refuse to pay for ethir on principle. It's part of the reason I switched to PC.

If you refuse to pay $40 a year for online (you also get free games with PSN+ and Gold every month) then I bet that you pirate everything you can on the PC.

Well I can only speak for myself, but if they did drop the online fee I would probably pick up an xb1 for my kids to play on (I'm past my interest in consoles). Oh and the same goes for the PS4 except I don't think anybody in the house wants one at the moment -- the Wii-U is the only console worth bothering with this year.

Dem tears doe!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!

I'm willing to place a bet that MS will follow sony and put something a kin to this for the X1 in the future, especially if it takes off.

I hope they do. Then we'll get a service that actually works.

Uhh...

Exactly. The PS4 has had bugger all.
