Should MS ditch the Xbox and support PC exclusively or possibly 3rd party?

Or possible go third party and support everything else? They already kind of do that with Minecraft being on every platform under the sun.

That'd be a dumb move. They're in second place and selling pretty well.

If that happens, what system am i supposed to laugh at? I don't want Xbox to go anywhere. It needs to stay for entertainment purposes. Also, the more competition (even tho the competition part on the green side is pretty damn pathetic during 8th gen...) the better.

Nah, If they can successfully support both Xbox and PC I want to see it happen.

I want to see exclusives for Xbox (GeoW and Forza will remain that way) and exclusive experience on PC (AOM: Tale of the Dragon is a PC exclusive MS is publishing soon)

Xbox Two will be a Windows 10 box optimised as a gaming console. Developers will code and compile to both PC & Xbox, essentially write once and run on both platforms, no need for "porting". There are 200 million Windows 10 PCs and growing. Over 30% of Steam users have upgraded to Windows 10. Sony should be worried.

Hahahaaaa...

Now windows will save the xbox brand by making the xbox an underpower PC.

My god for some of you there is no hope.

Barely and i think this year it will fall behind it,since the xbox 360 didn't pick up steam like until its 3rd year, and didn't enjoy all those price cuts and freebies the xbox one has got which make you think what would have happen if the xbox 360 would have.

MS won't ditch Xbox but they and PS both understand that they have to figure out how to open up their libraries to other platforms. MS in particular needs to figure out how to incorporate PCs more fully into their gaming division (which inevitably requires embracing or competing against Steam).

Certainly, with this disclaimer: There is no "Xbox Division". The Xbox is lumped together with several other seemingly unrelated products, such as Bing, Skype and Surface, to form the "Entertainment and Devices Division". To further muddy the waters products and incomes chaotically join and exit this "Division" all the time. This makes it [intentionally] hard to track a single product. Now on to the meat...

Here is a nice article that details '03 to '12. An astute observer may point out that it looks like things were getting better for the branddivision in the second half of this period. Certainly the division is even profitable. However it was later discovered that Microsoft had began rolling in Android royalty payments (via FAT patents) to prop up the numbers. The source of most of the drag? The Xbox.

"If we start with the overall traditional [Entertainment and Devices Division] business that actually loses money before corporate allocations and back out the nearly $2 billion 95 percent gross margin Android phone royalties, we conclude that Xbox platform plus Windows phone and Skype lose about $2.5 billion per year, and we estimate that the Xbox platform may account for roughly $2 billion of this,"

As near as we can tell the Xbox product has lost money every single year.

If anything I'd rather have Sony ditch consoles and go strictly software. Xbox is pushing the online features and constantly evolving and introducing new tech like cloud computing for games. Sony just seems to be content with a box that just plays games although they have nice feature in "share game".

Then we could see more stability and awesome Sony exclusives tap into xbox live for multiplayer/co-op experiences. And forget about the "PSN down due to maintenance".

So they lost $3 Billion on hardware over 12 years, how much did they make from first party exclusive games over the same period?

Need those figures as well to get a better picture of whether the Xbox brand (gaming division) has been a massive loss or an overall profit.

Why? Xbox One is starting to pick up some momentum in terms of sales and games.

Also I'm confused. Cows keep saying how Xbox One's games go to the PC, but keep telling me multiplats count when I point out how most games on consoles are multiplats and how little proper exclusives there are. Then all the excuses come out.

Is there only certain situations when "games are games"?

So. Sales, sales, sales, sales, sales,
no, they need to hold back PC,
no, they need to compete with Sony.

I guess there's nothing wrong with buying a console for its sales... man.
If that's the overall take on Xbox. Bet you guys can't wait for the Xbox Two and all the sales it will get us.
But Nintendo needs to go 3rd party, right? Because its sales are too low, and you don't want to buy another platform... for those games that you don't appreciate anyway.

I don't really care what they do. Either go 3rd party or get serious with gaming. Be that platform for the kids and teens who haven't got a job yet. Make it the best affordable PC. Sales, no more monthly fee, some way to type easily, no weird multiplat exclusivity restrictions, and quality hardware. Open up to modding. Server browsers. That sort of stuff.

I know this is System Wars and all... but any and all talk of "going third party" should be a ban worthy offense. The idea of any console maker going third party is absurd, and all it is designed for is to annoy.

Why would they dump a widely success product? That would be like asking if Sony should dump the PS and make only games.

Xbox has a different business model i.e. higher DRM controls over 3rd party software is a desirable feature for developers.

Just my thoughts on the matter, but I don't get why people think PSVR and Oculus are competing. The one who brings it out first and makes a success of it, has just tested the waters for future platforms right. PSVR wouldn't prevent the Oculus and VR future on the PC, the easier success on consoles might just ensure it. On the PC, we don't need things to happen day one, it can happen in time.

As long as the Xbox remains profitable, Microsoft will not leave console gaming for the PC.
