So at first I was very bent on not getting a new console until the next generation. But I have softened up to the idea and decided I need something new anyway, as I have a 4K tv. So the Xbox one S seems like a good way to get exclusives and an entertainment system in one for a very cheap price. I have never had an Xbox before. On the other hand the PS4 pro seems like it would benefit my TV more but it has no blu-ray player and it seems like my PS4 I have already+ power. Advice?

There is BARELY a difference between multiplayer on the consoles.

If you have a Gaming PC, the Xbox is worthless.

The PS4 Pro is probably the best option.....

Xbone has no exclusives and runs all the worst versions of multiplatform games.

Unless you plan on only watching movies the PS4 Pro is a far better buy.

It's also the logical purchase if you already own a PS4 since it still plays all your regular PS4 games.

Trade PS4 get a PS4 Pro upon release, it's 2x as powerful as PS4, 4x as powerful as xbone S and a ton more support with exclusive games.

Wait til next year then get a Scorpio for the multiplats or skip Scorpio all together and get a mid-range PC.

(a mid range PC next year will have all Scorpio games, more power plus extra exclusives xbox does not have and free online)

Figure out which system has a lot more games and has more games coming out, then make your choice.

Xbone is certainly a fun machine.

He will have fun no matter his choice, especially after he does the research to figure out what games he wants to play!

You should get an XB1S for the UHD Blu-ray and it has HDR support, and to play any exclusives you can't play on your PS4, but I'd advise you to keep your PS4 for now. At very least you won't be missing out on anything this gen has to throw at you.

Well i wouldn't trade my PS4 for a Pro, because you will only get one nights worth of entertainment out of the Pro and who knows how many diseases.

That's pretty much what it comes down to. The 4K stuff. yeah the Pro might allow some games to run smoother at 1080p, but it's not guaranteed from what's I've heard so far. Then again, if you don't have a 4K TV then the Xbox One won't be of much use either, besides playing certain games. A PC might be in order here.

Yeah, so? They're both going to look better than 1080p, even if marginally. I don't get your argument. Is it that the sony machine's upscaling will somehow look $400 better than the scaling quality TVs do? I guess one could argue that 1080p/60 upscaled on the ps4pro, if we get any games like that, can be upscaled to 4k/60, which is something that both current consoles can't do for most games.

Basically,yes.

What he is saying is that not all upscaling is created equal.

Most HDTVs just stretch the image to fit the screen using a hardware scaler, basically formatting to fit the screen properly.

Mid-high end tvs actually have an upscaler that can duplicated or mirror surrounding pixels. This actually adds some pixels to the image so it is sharper than just stretching the image.

PS4 Pro takes a very different method called checkerboard rendering. Basically the PS4 pro renders the equivalent of a 1440p image in a checkerboard pattern and using an algorith, the scaler reads the pixels and fills in the missing pixels. This is a higher quality method because it is done in rendering and not by the tv or a scaler. It looks more natural and gives the illusion of true 4k rather than just a stretched or replicated pixels which creates blur and ghosting.

Simple. Answer the questions below and you'll be able to decide really easily.

1. Do you need 4K Blu-ray?

2. Do you like or are interested in Sony Exclusives?

3. Do you like or are interested in Xbox Exclusives?

4. Do you value higher performance in multiplats?

I thought we already went through this?

The PS4 Pro isn't going to be a 300 watt console, it simply has a PSU rated at 300 watts. We already know the PS4 Slim with its 16nm based APU consumes around 85 watts, that means the Neo won't likely consume over 190 watts given its specs.

PS4 Pro's checkerboard rendering is not upscale since 4K frame buffer is still being created.

The checkerboard rendering has skipped odd or even pixels in a checkerboard fashion and the missing pixels interpolated by near neighbor pixels and temporal (using the past frame buffer).

Checkerboard neighbor interpolation method is superior to line neighbor interpolation and up-scaling (copy pixels by X factor).

Compare

1. Checkerboard neighbor interpolation method against original reference picture.

2. Line neighbor interpolation method against original reference picture.

Checkerboard render is not upscale nor native.

The PS4 pro shows a tangible upgrade from 1080p the XBox one S not so much.

However if movies are your thing then id go with the Xbox one S.

That is the PSU rating. There is no way in hell the PS4 Pro will ever come close to consuming 300+ watts. Not even the PS3 Fat consumed that much with its 300+ watt rated PSU. You'll see in a couple months when Digital Foundry tests it.

No, there is not a TV on the market that renders a game.

Doing it in rendering BEFORE you get the final image on your TV provides a much clearer, higher quality image and allows devs, if they wanted to, to add post process filters to mitigate any blur, ghosting, or aliasing.

TVs just stretch or duplicates pixels, blurring the image either way.

4K upscaling and checkerboard 4k are very different.

PS4 Pros method is just called upscaling because the average consumer wont understand or is patient enough to listen to an explanation.

In actuality it is MUCH different than traditional upscaling methods.

This is why it was at GDC, it was a big deal, a big breakthrough.

If you got PS4 already. Just buy an xbox one slim. You have more choice of new games to play.
