Poll Should critics have spotted Call of Duty Ghosts reuse of assets? (27 votes)

Yes it's der JOB! 67%
No, they are just dudes 33%

Shortly after release as most of us know, a video pepped up from a youtube user who spotted shockingfootage of a premium price game with a 4 hour campaign outright took a scene from a game several iterations back and transplanted it into it's latest title.

Gamespot, apparently has just caught this. As has IGN.

My dearest friends, since these are the major websites, the ones most of the general public come as a source of information and since it was so abhorrently obviose, should these supposed core review sites feel shame on not picking this up? Should the reviewers themselves be questioned on there ability and credibility to review titles?

Carolyn Petit would not let this shit pass.

Not certain of the answer, but good question.

To have a guess, if they didn't notice it's not the end of the world ... unless they put some qualifier in touting 'original campaign' as a merit of the game.

IF they noticed then sure. but they have so many games to play and write about i'm not surprised they didn't notice... Also, they weren't sent a review copy. Activision held a review event for them. So it's not like they had the opportunity to sit down and analyze it under a microscope

Review events sound very corrupt and controlling.

Talking about reused assets or copy-paste production values:

The sound of a grenade hitting the ground is still the same as it was in the first call of duty. That game came out 10 years ago, so IW has been using and reusing that sound for 10 years now...

It was just an animation reused. I don't see the problem.

If it was a small indie team with a limited budget people probably wouldn't care. Since it's a billion dollar franchise with a 4 hour sp and millions poured into marketing. Poop.

It was also the camera angles and panning too right down to how much of the character is in frame.

People keep blowing it off as an "homage" too which is such horse shit. Other games would get blasted for a stunt like that

Pretty much, Batman AO gets slated for being too familiar but this game literally copies a section and no one cares?

No. Being a game reviewer doesn't mean you have or should have encyclopedic knowledge of every asset ever used in a video game.

Agreed. The fact that it's still reusing the same engine for 10 years with only slight tweaks and using the same sounds for 10 years are way worse than a reused animation.

They are getting paid a salary and this example is far from hidden.

Also lets not forget here, Saints Row 4 and Arkham Origins got destroyed by both you the community and reviewers for reusing assets. All of a sudden we are suppose to be apologists? Outweagous.

It's economics, it saves time and resources that can be used for other things. Not even a big deal, it's only a big deal if entire missions are copy and paste.

Why would a huge company with a massive budget for the game skimp on a cutscene? It was most likely a "shout out" to the original team, not a cheap tactic. It just doesn't make sense.

Maybe they should write a summary for people who have never played the game before, and then make another summary for people who have played before.

"It's a rehash, but its a good rehash"?

I don't think it's reasonable to expect that reviewers would catch that. If they are hardcore fans of the series, then maybe. But there has been a lot of call of duty games and a lot of other games in between. For people to remember sequences so precisely, it's a tough ask.

critics have already written their reviews by the time gamers upload their own comparison vids that show how cookie cutter some of the scenes are from previous games; can't hold them accountable for missing that off the bat but they should write a piece about it afterwards once stuff like that becomes common knowledge

anyhow, wouldn't have stopped this from making a billion dollars right off the bat

Sometimes I miss the days when I had no clue what other gamers were thinking. As it turns out most gamers tend to over think and complain about the smallest crap >_>.

Exactly. Reviewers play a shit ton of games. You cant expect them to remember every moment from every game they've ever played

Agreed. Whilst they obviously love games, they put many hours into a variety of games. Sh*t, if I played Ghosts, I probably wouldn't have noticed.

This is what the internet is for.

"Reviewers" are 99% paid money hat dudes these days.

How can IGN give CoD 8.8 or whatever when it re-uses assets from old games? Based on that BF4 should be a 10.5

Prove it.
