Should cloud saves be free?

Bro i've been a PC gamer since 1995 I built my own Rig recently and have been gaming on PC for centuries. Consoles folks what are you talking about bojangles? I was high warlord twice in vanilla wow, I was ranked 2000 in starcraft 1 ladder. Before that I was playing warcraft 2 lans and on AOL. WHO ARE YOU? Some new PC gamer who just bought a PC lately?

While not really that big of a deal, I do use it from time to time when I switch from my laptop to my gaming PC when I play Civ 6.

I use them but I don't see why anyone would be entitled to them, since it costs money to maintain servers that house them.

Hosting some small saved files isn't actually that hard places like photobucket and youtube and imgur they host files 1000x times bigger for free to users than a few small save files here and there. Hosting these is nothing to these game companies. Valve does it for free and always has its nothing to them same with google on youtube. Its literal trash to them.

I only use them in the Soulsborne series to load saves off of the cloud to respec builds. Having just one cloud save per game is such shit on ps5. I am fine with them being behind a paywall, but there must be a minimum of 3 save slots per game.

Gamers need to know that things that are free to them have a cost and someone has to pay for them, whether console makers subsidizing the costs or through consumers by paying higher software/hardware prices. Also, even if gamers have to pay a fee to use a service like uploading save data on the cloud, the fee may not cover the entire cost to run and upkeep the servers as console makers will subsidize the rest. I think this is how some health insurance programs work.

It is nice to upload save data to the cloud for free, but is this service really necessary or it is just optional? We need to focus on the forest (essentials) than the trees (non-essentials like free cloud saves).

No, it shouldn't be free.

Steam just does it. But I think it's important to their business strategy that you can just sign into steam on any device and continue where you left off. I think console manufacturers make you pay because they know most people are not switching devices probably. I appreciate it on steam, but don't mind as much on consoles. That could change.

Talking about consoles, cloud saves always comes with paying for online, right? Paying extra for cloud saves on top of paying for online would be insane. Just paying for online is already fucked up.

And i'm happy to pay for online on consoles, we have less, and by less i mean a shitload less cheaters than PC, and who would charge for a lawless land that is PC online LOL.

Well when is the last time you used a cloud save on your Xbox? I haven't ever needed to use a cloud save for my Switch Lite or PS4.

You realize IP_Daily most games now have cross-play enabled with PC? So now you are not only paying to play with same people who are paying for free your probably getting wrecked by them and Microsoft just tried to double the price for you to be able to play with them while they still play for free. (Yet you still see nothing wrong)

So I hope you have fun waiting in ques for hours on Xbox searching for a match without PC cross-play enabled since nobody friggin plays on xbox anymore anyway.

My Halo MCC online xbox one ques literally didn't even find matches for 3+ hours of going in an out I couldn't find a game and then turned the system off. On PC i find matches all the time same with other games.

Company's do large ban waves on PC all the time its actually pretty common I never hear xbox banning loads of people like blizzard or other companies.

@i_p_daily: Although I'm not "happy to pay" I do preferer to play online on console over PC. PC gamers like to pretend cheating isn't an issue when it absolutely is.

Anyway, hopefully someday Nintendo and Sony will stop charging for such a basic function such as cloud saving. That's really anti consumer.

If your paying for online anyway what does it matter if the cloud saves are free or not ps+ and nintendo guys get those saves too when they buy the online. Literally them being free doesn't matter. Are you using them on xbox?

Like literally where were you when free to play games were locked behind a paywall for the past 7 years on xbox one? People like you and daily were saying its mean to make people who buy there games to pay for online and free games get to play for free now you see no issue now that microsoft changed there stance. I'm not happy to pay for Nintendo's online. Mostly because I find the service ridiculously bad. On PC, I game online for free, and it works like it should. No lag, whereas all games on Switch lags a lot. Smash is one of their most popular games, and it's borderline unplayable online. Their online is cheap, but I'd rather pay a bit more to get a service that works.

Regarding cheaters, it's definitely a problem on PC. Haven't had issues with this myself with the games I play online though. Maybe I'm lucky, maybe the problem is overblown. 🤷 I play online games on PC every day without issues, and most people I see bringing up cheaters on PC are console gamers. I can imagine it being a problem mostly for really popular games, like Fortnite, PUBG, CoD, CS, and the like, which I don't play. I do play Overwatch from time to time, and I've never come across a cheater since I started playing in 2016.

Your Switch didn't magically just die recently you hardcore lem, the systems been barely out very long and I have nothing but awesome experiences with it.

Even if it did who cares if you lost all your progress welcome to how video games have been going on 30 years now without cloud saves if your system or whatever died you lost everything its no big deal i've lost saves before on memory cards I start the game over if I want to finish it I don't complain about cloud saves being locked behind a paywall because i suck at taking care of my system and it suddenly dies after a year or two.

Been a rough start to the year for lemtots. First they find out PS5 is outselling XSX 3:1. Then Microsoft releases their official "exclusive" list for the year and it's nothing but indies and late ports of games already available on other platforms. Now they dodge a huge $60 price increase bullet thanks to good upstanding Sony fans calling Microsoft out for their bullshit.
