Seriously, how can Nintendo justify their $350 32GB Wii U SKU now?

Nintendo stated that they have no intentions on dropping the price of the Wii U after hearing about the PS4's $399 price point.  No offence, but what drugs are Nintendo on?  The PS4 is around 5x more powerful than the Wii U, has a 500GB hardrive and is only $50 more than the 32GB Wii U. The tech in the Wii U gamepad is not exactly state of the art, so how can they justify the price now?  The freaking Vita has a better screen than the Wii U.

1.) If u want to bring in the Vita, then you have to add the $250 it retails to ps4 final cost which make it $650. And of course Nintendo is going to drop the price, they are waiting for the new systems to launch and at that time you will see a $50-$100 drop, or maybe $50 with a game included.

You have to compare it with the 300$ SKU.

The 350$ SKU includes a game, a few extras, and a digital promotion of 10% off in everything of the eShop (in coupons - 5$ for each 50$ you spend).

They can't, it's a rip off. Apparently they are willing to just keep being the worst selling new console in recent modern history for now, and will only cut the price when they absolutely have to, which is a cowardly move. They could have been bold, and gotten ahead of the curve. Too bad. I want to support them, but I'll be damned if I bend over and grab my ankles to do it.

Well look at it this way. The Wii U will have a better library out when the PS4 launches.
They may be waiting to see the sales.

The game costs basically peanuts. It is nothing more than a tech demo. Even compared to the $299 Wii U, the PS4 is still a far greater deal. The $299 Wii U is still 5x weaker and only comes with 8GB of internal memory.

All those great Wii U titles aren't coming out until 2014, so actually the Wii U will still have a pretty lackluster lineup when the PS4 launches.

Well I can spoil the surprise for them, the sales will suck.  $349 is a non starter for such outdated tech.

I don't think there have been that many games confirmed to release 2013 for the PS4 either, so I'm still unclear kinda, how they will relate.

Not enough. $299 is still too close to the PS4, it's not just the lack of power compared to it, but the pathetic internal storage. $100 more for five times the power and several orders of magnitude more storage? Wii U's sweet spot is $249.  The only way $299 works is if a full RELEVANT game is included. (Not Nintendoland)

They can't, but blind and misinformed casuals will buy them.
On all aspects, it is the worse console, besides the usual cartoon stuff to appease dedicated fans.
Even that doesnt hold a candle to some Next Gen games.

Cant believe my smartphone has more memory than the Wii:U.
Clearly, Nintendo are being cheap and looking for an easy buck again.

Actually the problem they have is that casuals are NOT buying them, and neither are core gamers. (Because the price is absurd for the tech)

It is enough. Your average person isn't going to be concerned about tech specs. Wii U is fully BC, will have a better software line up and be $100 cheaper.

Nintendo had never sold any console at a loss. I believe their Success with the wii had them thinking like apple, they will buy whatever we put out there. The wii u hardware wise couldn't cost them $200 max to build I'd even go as low as $150, it's that controller that's driving the cost up. But even that can't be more then $80 max to build. They could total drop it down to $250 and make a profit, but even then people will not buy it at that price, they Effectively the dreamcast at theis point.

SM3D world/Pikmin 3/Rayman Legends are must haves for sure.
Most of the PS4 titles aren't exclusive.

I agree $350 was a bit much, but when you factor in the cost of an XL 3DS, and the Nintendo Land pack-in, it sort of makes sense to price it as such.

No way Nintendo sticks to that price point for too much longer. IMHO, they should drop the 32GB SKU to $299 a week, or two before the PS4 and Xbone launches, or hell drop it all the way down to $250 and it will actually be competitive.

Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D are the only games on that list that have the potential to move units, but they are still not big hitters like Super Smash Bros, or Mario Kart.

That's what they are doing.  The 8gig is being taken out of the equation, I believe, with the price going to $299.  This way Nintendo sort of avoids the that "diminishing value" of a product when there is a price cut.

$250 would be nice for those that havent bought it, but when you compare that to the 3DS line, it doesn't give the wiiu that "premium" home console vibe to a lot of consumer--"this is only $50 more?"

I still believe that the wiiu was cut back, technology wise, based on the feedback of initial 3DS price.  What happened is the wii ran its course, went all the way down to $129 at a lot of places, and in turn started changing the expected product cost consumers became accustomed to seeing with Nintendo products.  Not "budget" by means, but far from cutting edge.  The 3DS was, imo, likely a test of sorts to see how much people would be willing to for a Nintendo product and slightly raise that cap in the process.

Nintendo is a smart company.  They'll figure something out and be fine.  Just look at 3DS.  They release the console at $250, are more or less forced to reduce the price to $170, and what do they do to recoup?  Shortly after, they RAISE THE PRICE!  They release the XL at $50 more than the initial cost, which is even cheaper to produce.

...

I wouldn't be surprised if NSMBU+Luigi become the new pack in.

you basically paying that much just to play nintendo exclusives, you won't be getting multiplat games which in my opinion really makes a system. 350 for a secondary device is absurd and nintendo has no one to blame but themselves.

You are confusing Wii U with Wii. Besides Xbox 360 (kinect especially) and Ps3 have been dominating party gaming past 2-3 years.

The only market Wii U is dominating right now is nintendo fans, and even many of them are waiting for next-gen mario and/or zelda.

The Xbox One seems smaller, in my eyes. Wiiu runs the games off of the disc, with the option to buy a 2tb hdd. Xbox One, on the other hand, ships with a non upgrade able 500gig hdd and requires 25+ gig games to be completely installed.

This was probably the most disappointing thing about Wii-U's E3. They said they were going to "re-introduce" the system. I figured that meant new SKU's, bigger HDD's, and substantial price cut... along with games that NOBODY expected. The Wii-U needs a 128GB model, and that model needs to be $249 (considering PS3 has a 320GB model that is MSRP $249 and will be $199 for Christmas). Not all of that may have been realistic, but that's honestly what Nintendo needed to do in order to change the trajectory of the Wii-U. Instead, they literally did NOTHING as it relates to the hardware, and not much surprising in the way of games either. Yawn. They could have immediately seen a huge boost in sales, now they won't, and if they wait until 2014 it might be way to late IMO.

The Xbox One seems smaller, in my eyes. Wiiu runs the games off of the disc, with the option to buy a 2tb hdd. Xbox One, on the other hand, ships with a non upgrade able 500gig hdd and requires 25+ gig games to be completely installed.

I don't want to buy a dedicated external HDD for a Wii-U, nor do I want to use my existing external HDD (which I only use for backups) on the Wii-U. If I do have to buy one, that effectively increases the price of the Wii-U since Nintendo has passed that cost on to me. PLUS if I do that I'm having to deal with the additional inconvenience of having yet another device with yet another cable and power plug cluttering up my entertainment area. No, just, no. I shouldn't have to deal with that shit just because Nintendo is too cheap to include at least a reasonable level of internal storage.

It is not at all acceptable to have to run games off of an external HDD or off a slow a$$ SD card. Terrible justification on Nintendo's part. Considering they don't require installs, and basically limit patches to smaller than 360, I could live with less than 500 GB. Hell I've been "living with" 120GB on my PS3 for years now. But 32GB is absolutely rediculous, and it was rediculous for a "deluxe" system on the day it launched. At launch it should have been 8GB basic, and 128GB deluxe, or something like that. But the whole concept of basic system is broken considering just 1 or 2 games or updates can wipe out your entire storage. More likely the Wii-U needs a single 128GB SKU, and that SKU needs to be $249. Anything worse than that is a cheap ripoff IMO.

To me they can't justify their price, espeically once the PS4 drops. Nintendo's going to have to knock a $100 off their price at the very least.

Pretty sure they will drop the price closer to the PS4's launch. They won't announce any price cut till the last minute though, people won't pay for a Wii U now if they think a cut is coming.

They justify the price by looking to see if people are buying. People are..so the price stays the same. It's also a good strategy to drop the price around the release of the other 2 consoles.

This thing is selling worse than the GCN. Nintendo is doing a poor job justifying anything about this console.

They can't. It should be $199.

Core gamers already know a price drop is coming...
