Poll Series X has more 120 FPS so far. Is PS5 gonna try to follow this 120 FPS tactic? (28 votes)

Yes. 18%
No. 82%

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2020-08-01-all-confirmed-120fps-games-for-ps5-and-xbox-series-x#gamelist

Right now, we know about eight next-gen games with 120fps support on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X - and the spread is far from even.

While the PS5's design is groundbreaking in many ways, we've heard relatively little about which games will support 120fps. Right now, the list of 120fps PS5 games contains a single entry, but no doubt it'll grow over time.

Full list of 120fps PS5 games

  • Dirt 5

Now let's look at the other side of the coin with the Xbox Series X. Given Microsoft's ties to PC gaming on Windows, it's perhaps no surprise that we've seen a fair few games announced with 120fps support. Here are all the games we know about right now.

Full list of 120fps Xbox Series X games

  • Dirt 5
  • ExoMecha
  • Gears 5
  • Halo Infinite (multiplayer)
  • Metal: Hellsinger
  • Ori and the Will of the Wisps
  • Orphan of the Machine
  • Second Extinction

Backwards compatibility could also result in 120fps titles, with Series X running some previous-gen games at double their original 60fps frame-rate.

Unless it's a VR game... 120fps isn't required. Thus, I hope they don't bother trying to achieve 120fps with their non-VR games.

Ps5 can’t it is too weak.

Expect massive downgrades in frame rate and fidelity on any multi plat game

I wouldn't think so, though they are releasing their "Ready for PS5" TV's with 4K/120 and 8K/120, but definitely don't expect games to be aiming for that, unless a developer wishes to tie their game features/graphics around those frames. I'm not even sure if we could see 1440p checkerboard at 120.

Forgot about this. So technically, 120FPS was already a thing with PS4 through PSVR?

My card struggles with that, PS5 has no chance. Although you mentioned checkerboard, perhaps.

This is way outside of my area of expertise, and i'd be shocked if it happened. TBH, personally i'm not worried about that true 4K, as i'd happily do 1440/120 on my PC if I struggle to maintain that locked 60. Still, with DLSS2, we get the best of both worlds.

Here's another fakefan who thinks that the SeX advantage is going to allow it's multiplats to have "massive" differences over the ps5 multiplats.

The only game I see having a 120fps mode from PlayStation would be Gran Turismo.

I'm sure some 3rd party devs will choose to have 120fps modes but, I don't see a reason to do it unless it's some sort of esports / multiplayer game.

Sackboy game doesn't really look that impressive. I'm also guessing a game like Astrobot/Playroom might support it eventually.

Dirt 5 is both 120fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Though I don't think Sony dev particularly cares about 120fps mode as they usually aims to make the most beautiful game on this planet.

So now console gamers suddenly care about frame rates over graphical fidelity?

Surely 60fps with better graphics would be the direction to go?

I remember a VERY long time ago when this forum was nearly new, they did this with online gaming and FPS games for the most part lmao. Both were "PC trash". Not joking.

@Random_Matt: No offense but the Radeon VII is not a very good card and very niche, PS5 and Seriex X are faster. Back on topic 120fps is a waste right now. How many people own 120hz displays? I don't, I have 4K HDR10 and don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. So for the 5% who can take advantage of this good I guess. BTW where the **** are the next gen fighting games at?

A) It is a very good card for the present, it is like calling a 2070 shit, mine is better. Undervolting and overclocking is great.

B) I'll be upgrading, no shit next gen are better, was unaware they released.

Aiming for 120 FPS is a waste since most casuals wouldn't have high-refresh rate displays anyway. 60 FPS would be more than enough, and downscaling from 4k to 1080p displays would be better just to hit that 60 FPS.

@Random_Matt: maybe I went in too hard. Radeon VII is a very good card and comparable to RTX 2070S/2080 in many games, wasn't trying to diss your card. Really unless you game at 4K or have an interest in RT there is no need to upgrade that beastly PC. But RDNA2 should bring IPC gaines, RT, VRS and hopefully a DLSS-like solution.

Nah man, it is not strong enough. I'm hoping the new cards can provide a consistent 144+ FPS at 1440P, on AAA I cannot reach that. If not then I guess I won't bother upgrading, we will see what they are like.

It's crazy how console marketing misses the optimal experience by so much.

Obviously a console is just a mid-spec computer. The sweet spot is all about balance. 4K and 120Hz is a waste of resources. You need to target 60Hz at ~1440p and upscale it. You'll get lots of graphical details and smooth performance.

Somebody gotta check these fools.

@Random_Matt: current rumors point to an 80 CU Navi21 with performance in excess of 30% of RTX 2080 Ti, and 3090/3080 TI about 10% ahead of that. Extrapolate the lower models from that as you will. But remember always chasing the 144hz dream always pushes up against ever more demanding games.

Knowing that 30 fps is all what people seek and need...on consoles.

NO is probably the shortest answer.

Xbox will be targeting cool kids with 4KTVs that will have 120/240hz, and those on PC who already have equipment. Cause Xbox will have games that utilize all the greatness that is 60fps, across board, no "it's pretty, but choppy 20fps" like PlayStation, at least Switch has an excuse.

I guess you have already forgotten that the OG Xbone was running games at 720p to start the gen.

And no TV is 240hz lol. Good job exposing yourself as being completely clueless about them.

@Telekill: I agree. Personally 120fps (for a non VR game) is as much of a waste of resources as native 4k. Bring me everything at something like 1600p60 with other visual improvements, and i'll be happy.
