Sea of Thieves - 14 min of gameplay - Does MS have a hit coming?

Rare's Sea of Thieves has some gameplay to show from Gamescom. Check out the video above to see what it's all about.

Gotta say I'm left rather disappointed so far. We knew from the get-go this was going to be a multiplayer offering, with your team taking a ship and going out. This video shows exactly that. But I can't help but feel it all looks a bit dull. Maybe combat between ships would get intense as your having to micromanage your actions with everyone else on deck.

What are your impressions? Is this a return to form for Rare?

This game looks really good. Refreshingly unique too which is a nice change for Microsoft

The sea looks fantastic, however the boat doesn't seem to be affected by the big waves that much.

I'm hoping I'm just not giving it a fair shake after seeing the first bout of gameplay that isn't scripted nonsense. The social aspect of it should be grand. Hopefully you have enough tools and actions at your disposal to do some pretty neat things that will create fun stories for the whole party.

I haven't written it off yet. I'm hoping to be swayed back to the hype side.

So what do you actually do in this game? Just sail around aimlessly until you find a ship to battle? Looks like the No Man's Sky of pirate games.

In all seriousness, I wager sailing with a group at first will be kind of exhilarating, but then lose its luster. That's one of the reasons why it's looking a bit dull to me. Other than that, yes there's the ship battling, there's sailing to islands and looting, and it's very much about the social aspect. Supposedly, there will be quests and such as well (mentioned in the video.)

It definitely still has a long way to go, but I am certainly interested. Hopefully third person will be entirely realized and the fighting mechanics are solid. It has an MMO vibe, so if they do it right I could see myself playing. As long as there is plenty of pirate-esque gameplay that isn't just entirely over cliché and as there is a lot more than just naval battles.

I'll be doing all that in a few hours for real this weekend on my boat on my island. Well, all but the pirates and cannons anyway. lol :P

The game looks really fun to play. I've got high hopes for it.

Was really intrigued by it when it was revealed. Less hyped now knowing it's a MP game, such promise.

The more i see this game, the more i want it.

I've been polishing my peg leg every day (sometimes multiple times) in preparation for this game.

Love the art style and the open ended concept of sailing around with a group of friends taking on other rabble-rousers on the open sea. I would like to see some actual objectives/missions though. Without some direction it could get boring after only a short while.

To each their own but this game does zero for me, just looks really boring.

Eh I really don't like the aimless multiplayer "make your own fun" look of it.

Would prefer a detailed single player world.

Looks like a fun concept, but it's an incredibly shallow execution. I feel like it would get old quick. If they put either more depth or just more activities in general in, it might be really fun; such as going to islands and spelunking through caves for treasure and what not.

For what it is now, it looks a bit dull. Just an arcade boat attack simulator.

Although, if it's like 20 bucks, then I can't really blame them for having so little content/depth.

Meh, looks pretty good, not a day one buy for me, but maybe on a sale. I do love me some pirating, Pirates! by Sid has still never been bested.

The version at E3 was kinda bare bones but everyone that I talked to that tried it loved it. Behind Zelda it was the most popular game at E3 easily.

It has exploration & wonder, survival elements, more interesting ship battles, and you could play multiplayer, so it's already better than No Man's Sky, that's for sure.

I'm worried that I might need friends to enjoy this.

Hmmm I'm still not that excited for this game... I just don't think it's my thing. I really wish they were making a SP game in this exact style & setting though... that'd be amazing!

Yeah that'd be awesome... but imagine how cool a SP Rare game would be in this setting. Makes me smile just thinking about it.

Don't understand the hype for this game at all. Yeah, people like different things but this looks like extremely cheap shovelware. Does it cost money? I seriously don't know. If it's free I'll give it a try but I don't expect it to be interesting for more than 30 minutes.

That game is gonna fail so hard, yes lets make a game that requires a group of people/friends just to operate a ship.

It's almost like it's embracing being a multiplayer game rather than being a single player game with human opponents.

That's not any indication that it's going to fail. It may sell well as long as it's priced at a low price point. I couldn't ever see paying more than 25 dollars for a game like this.

Now, if it's 60, then yeah, it'll fail.

Thing I wonder is whether you can get enough people in a party to cooperate. I can maybe find one or two close friends tops to maybr play it with but I imagine I'll have to do some teaming up with strangers, and some people just go online to annoy others and I can see that being an issue.

I'm hopeful that it doesn't become boring. I can understand zass' concerns. But the idea of me and some buds, like the crew we look to build cap'n, fighting it out on the open seas is pure gold.

I could see a game like this doing really well on PC. The hope is that MS doesn't keep this game exclusive to the Windows Store.

Problem for me always comes down to having the time to get together with friends. Majority of my gaming is singleplayer because I can play on my own terms since my schedule is so loose-y goose-y.

I hope for great things though.
