I have never seen a more marketing jargon filled console announcement, no actual playable games shown, no specs shown, no UI, no console or controller but just usual MS jargon tossed around. What a missed oppertunity by M$. I still know nothing of this console other than what was already logical.

This announcement seemed more like an official tease. They will probably do a proper and detailed reveal on next year's E3.

AMD's hardware accelerated ray-tracing is not yet ready.

MS revealed APU size relative to GDDR6 memory modules.

Sony has revealed 8 core Zen v2 CPU for PS5.

---

AMD has revealed NAVI RX 5000 GPU series for PS5.

RX 5700 has similar chip area size to RX-480 "Polaris" and 7870 "Pitcairn" GPUs which are baseline GPU design for PS4 Pro and PS4 respectively.

GPU chip area size list

NVIDIA RSX = 258 mm2 for PS3

AMD RX-480 "Polaris" = 232 mm2 for PS4

AMD 7870 "Pitcairn" = 212 mm2 for PS4 Pro

AMD RX 5700 "NAVI ???" = 222.5 mm2 (see reference note 1)

1. https://wccftech.com/amd-navi-rx-5700-is-only-the-mid-range-brings-rtx-2070-performance-at-half-the-die-size/

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-rtx-2070.c3252

RTX 2070's 445 mm2 / 2 = 222.5 mm2

Sony is consistent with GPU selection chip area size.

PS5's GPU count be slightly larger due to semi-custom IP blocks from the next GPU design.

Sony mentions 8K which refers to HDMI 2.1's main feature. HDMI 2.1 also comes with AMD's FreeSync, hence locked 60 hz is not required.

---

Sony mentions ray-tracing with audio feature for PS5 which corresponds to AMD's Radeon Rays 3.0 "BHV search" enhancements with TrueAudio Next. https://gpuopen.com/gaming-product/true-audio-next/

The TAN library may be used in conjunction with Radeon Rays as foundational accelerated algorithms for a complete physics-based audio solution.

8 core Zen 2 chiplet size is about 70 mm2 https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/9uskmh/zen_2_die_size/

PS5 doesn't need desktop Zen v2 PC's IO north-bridge chip.

PS5: 70 mm2 + 223 mm2 = 293‬ mm2 for AMD's main GPU and CPU IP blocks covered.

PS4 APU total area size = 348 mm2

PS4 Pro APU total area size = 321 mm2

Sony has a reasonable chip area budget for semi-custom designs e.g. 55 mm2 chip area for custom work e.g. ray-tracing accelerator or slightly larger NAVI GPU.

---

Xbox Scorpio APU has 359 mm2 chip area size with larger GPU in the 285 mm2 range.

----

Both Vega II and Zen v2 supports Infinity Fabric interconnects hence CPU can directly connect to the GPU. One could assumes NAVI also supports Infinity Fabric interconnects.

GPU already has memory controllers.

https://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/3075196/amd-cray-supercomputer

In AMD/Cray's supercomputer, Zen CPU is connected to Vega II GPU via Infinity Fabric interconnects

Ungaro continued: "The new accelerator-centric compute blades will support a 4:1 GPU to CPU ratio with high-speed AMD Infinity Fabric links and coherent memory between them within the node.

Raven Ridge APU's CPU and GPU are also connected by Infinity Fabric links.

Small north-bridge I/O would be needed for any south-bridge functions and north-bridge driven storage solutions.

Sony just leaked a few bits of information via different sources from what I can see.

Microsoft did the same but via E3 show.

Neither have announced their next gen console yet. They just told you its coming.

The bad thing about it is that they hinted about scarlet talks and just gave nothing, and in fact what they claim the scarlet will do is already known then PS5 will do it as well.

The presentation was basically the same thing they did for the xbox one X,is like what the hell is 2016 again? The presentation was in the same exact way the xbox one X one was.

MS was like well sony is not here.

Lets show a bunch of multiplatforms no halo gameplay and toss some Scarlet crumbs in it to make it look like we have something great.

No, I don’t think so. It was fine for what it was. It’s better to just tease it now and have the big blowout next year when you’re only about 4 to 5 months away from launch then to do it now when it’s nearly a year and a half away from launching.

Are you saying it's worse than the Ps5 announcement which did almost the same thing??

Also, Scarlett and PS5's announcements weren't traditional announcements. These were just announcements of a little of what to expect of the consoles. They did the same thing with the Pro and X if i'm not mistaken. Consoles don't get a full unveiling until the year they release, which is next year for both of these consoles.

ah no. it was a teaser. the wiiu is the worst reveal i can remember anyway. it's not good when you actually fully reveal your new console and people are going "....what? i don't understand".

by the sounds of things it looks like, behind closed doors, MS, sony and AMD have developed a platform with common features (zen 2 based CPU, navi based GPU, SSD storage setup of some sort to help with loading) and thats going to be the base on which the PS5 and scarlett are built. if its a holiday 2020 release then the specs will still be in flux somewhat. GPU speeds, CPU speeds, Ram speed and timing, ram amount, how much CPU time and ram will the OS take up. things like that are probably still up in the air. the of course are the features. if your going to reveal the console you want to reveal the whole package.

Sony's CEO has famously said in the past "why go first?" They would love MS to show their hand this early, copy their homework and look like geniuses like2013.

MS is not going to make it that easy this time. They gave you a date of Holiday 2020, it is actually on Sony if they want to go earlier at this point.

Price&specs are all coming hot and late as soon as one or the other is announced.

I literally gave my friend my six year old GPU (probably like 100 dollars used now) the other day and all he did was plunk it in his four year old Dell desktop (which was probably like 600 dollars new) and first thing he said was "Wow this looks great!". Three hours later, he is already preferring mouse and keyboard.

The irony is that this old hardware is probably more capable and suitable to gaming than the next-gen consoles. Will it run 4K? No, of course not. But fortunately there is a lot more to a game than just a high resolution.

So yeah, "lol nope" is 100% accurate.

Now that you mention, PS5 reveals of certain specs kinda sucked. No higher production value presentation that's even as "bad" as project scarlet presentation yesterday.

While I do think PS5 reveals was a bit of a killjoy to MS' announcement, they both kinda suck. I vaguely remember conferences for last gen's official reveals.

Avatar image for 2Chalupas

Does that even count as an announcement?

I knew something was up when they spent so much time talking up Xbox One games and the streaming stuff. Still, at least they did a conference. But if people were watching for the next-gen announcement it was ridiculously disappointing. It was basically just an announcement of a future announcement - and next E3 might be the true reveal.

I guess we got a release date of holiday 2020. Wonder where the PS5 comes in (earlier, same time, or into 2021). I thought for sure MS would release their next machine first, but now I think maybe Sony will get out first (esp if they do a proper reveal in the next several months... which I assume is their reason for skipping E3).
