Coming courtesy of NeoGAF, as always:

Now Chinese blog WPDang reports that their sources suggest we may see Microsoft launch a range of new hardware in October, ranging from the Lumia 940 and 940 XL to a new Surface Pro 4, new Band 2 fitness wearable and also a new Xbox One Mini console.

Of the Surface Pro 4 WPDang suggests it may use Intel’s new Skylake processor, and of the Xbox One Mini, they believe it may drop Blu-ray playback functionality and become a much smaller, quieter device about 1/3 the size of the current behemoth.

SOURCE

Dropping the Blu Ray drive, and going all digital to give us a cheaper and quieter console is something that makes sense to me. Would I buy that model, myself? I'm not too sure I would, but I can see it having a market.

That sounds AWESOME!

I would absolutely get rid of my current one, especially as all my games are digital.

Why don't they do it from day one? Fat consoles aren't exactly popular especially when its this weak.

By removing the controller ports and having build in Kinect, you can now Play Xbox One in a compact form by using your mind.*

*60% of the time kinect will not track you accurately, You can by the console port add-on for $200 to add a controller.

That would make sense as Windows 10 is rolling out for it around that time.

Now, it doesnt say the entire drive is gone, just that bluray playback is out. However, if it really is 1/3 the size I dont see how it could get that small without the whole drive being taken out.

If it's just the playback, then I'd okay with it.

@ladyblue: Frankly, buying disc based games is more of a pain than anything else on the x1. Installs are excruciating. Hoping it changes with win10.

Instead of being the size of a shipping container, it's now the size of a reasonably priced hatchback.

Actually, in many situations it may be. If the game has patches, itll try and download those while the game installs and takes forever. Often hours.

Didn't know that. So best case would be to disconnect from live, install the game, & then do the updates?

It's easy to abandon the disk drive when you have no games. The average XBone owner won't even notice.

Equating consoles to a service like Steam? Cuz, like, that would be epic.

So this wouldn't have a blu-ray drive? A lot of console gamers aren't big on digital only. Some may get one and if it were cheap enough, I'd possibly get one for my bedroom, but only because I have my main X1 I can use for physical media. It would have to be sub $200 for me to consider it though which I know wouldn't happen.

Well you see, both Playstation and Xbox have online stores that allow you to purchase and download games. You don't even need a disk! It is quite amazing

I'm curious and would like to see what it looks like and what it does.

I'd be ok with it not having a disc drive as the only game I own physically is MCC. But there would still need to be away to put that one game I own on the new Disc-less drive Mini Xbox One either via PC and Windows 10 or a trade in style for download code.

Like someone else said it would have to be sub $200 price range to try this out and see how I felt about it.

Oh and edit digital games would have to be cheaper. I got MK premium edition for $10 less digitally over the physical purchase at a store. That trend would have to continue or be even lower.

@lostrib: as long as we agree that having an all-digital game library on a console isn't exactly a wonderful idea or anything.

I mean, technical explanations aside, this move can easily be construed as MSes way of saying "**** you, we didn't need the original DRM anyway."

I don't see anything about MS being only digital. So i don't see an issue with consumers having the option to have an all-digital game library, some seem to prefer it

No, the original DRM was as bad as it was because it was an imposition, there was no option provided.

Here, users would consciously buy intoa digital only ecosystem, but they would also have the option fora regular, disc based console if that's what they want. The two situations are not even remotely similar.

brb..all digital means you dont own s&*..and you certainly wont be playing or handling your games 20 years from now when the service is gone. So long $$$ and so long collecting and enjoying your games..

I suppose. Still going to be funny as all eff-out seeing people going crazy over this who would otherwise torpedo the PSP-Go when that was "an option."

@Shewgenja: I'd be 100% ok if this is all true and a digital only console with no disc drive and MS is basically rolling out their original vision for the Xbox One and it has the family Share features and the "Xbox One is always Online" oh no.

Like I said I own one physical disc and its MCC the other 6 games I own are all on my Xbox digitally and I prefer that.

If this new Mini One is a reality and its at the $200 or less price range. I will have one, maybe even if it's $250 but not any higher. Especially if it has no disc drive. The only way MS fucks this up is with the price point, if it's not near $200 it will fail.

Also not even remotely similar- the PSP Go was more expensive, was not compatible with a lot of PSP games (at the time of its launch, over half of all PSP games, I believe), and removed functionality that was present in the other models. In comparison, this Xbox One would have the same level of functionality, would be compatible with all games (since all Xbox One games are available digitally), and would be cheaper.

Also not true.No one has actually said that, stop trying to put words in people mouths, stop misattributing, stop skirting around the issue of your own fallacious statements. Instead of dodging the issue, and not responding to, the flimsy analogy you made, I wish you would just admit that you were wrong this time around. Not everything that Microsoft does is automatically evil, you know.

I understand the advantages it brings, but there are two reasons why I would choose physical over digital.

a. I can lend/sell it.

b. Biggest reason for me. Having to redownload everything in case I run out of space or if the drive fails.

@charizard1605: no thanks, I want to actually OWN my software. I want to be able to buy and sell used games and have 100% ownership of them. Lets say I buy madden 16 for $60, in a few months I can sell it for maybe $30 and recoup some of the money. Digital means you pay $60 and are stuck with it forever.
