Alleged leaks claim that Nintendo-owned studio Retro Studios is working on the new Switch game Star Fox Grand Prix.

Reddit user DasVergeben is one of the folks to have made the claim, who says it is a racing title “like Diddy Kong Racing mixed with F-Zero”. DasVergeben further states that it will have an adventure mode with boss fights and a hub world.

A 4chan visitor also posted this logo, though it is unclear whether or not it is legitimate:

While there is skepticalism of this rumor, Eurogamer says that many of the details line up with what it has heard from its own sources. However, it is unsure if the name or logo are correct.

A modern Diddy Kong Racing type of game would be pretty awesome, actually.
Make it have an online overworld kind of lobby and focus on online multiplayer over couch play since we already have MK8 Deluxe for that.

DK racing was epic back on N64 one of my most played games on the system. Star fox racing sounds promising racing in planes bold move if true.

Sounds pretty cool. I'd take that over boring-ass regular Starfox any day. My favourite SF game is SF Adventures. And I really want a new F-Zero. To me, this is good news if true.

Not like this... We need a proper modern Star Fox game before a spin off.

we got one. zero was starfox by the numbers. it didn't go down well. i don't think that kind of game is going to fly (excuse the pun) in today's market to be honest: especially at full price. the mainline starfox idea needs a complete and total overhaul with an eye to games like freespace, elite dangerous and so on.

but a star fox racing game...yeah....odd. i remember playing new york race a long time ago. it was a flying racing game where the tracks were quite vertical as well as horizontal. there would be different routes through each circuit and it was a bit mad. interesting idea but the execution could have been better.

so if its different enough from mario kart and Fzero then it could be quite interesting (i'm not saying itll be like new york race mind). itll be tough to execute well but if anyone can pull it off its Nintendo.

Branching out by offering a supplemental racing title beyond MK could be promising.

That sounds interesting. I trust in Retro Studios to deliver a good game regardless. I think they're a talented bunch.

I'm not sure why they are using the Star Fox brand though.

Could be interesting, but I'll believe it when I see it. Rumors were flying around years ago of Retro making a StarFox/Metroid crossover and that turned out to be Donkey Kong.

Waste of a developer. They should be making a large scale game like a new Star Fox Adventures instead.

And Nintendo fans will run out to spend $90 Canadian on this game because it is “fun”.

I'll always contend that Nintendo needs to rely less on old franchises and branch out a lot more than it does but I'm not going to write this one off until I've seen it. They do need to release more games because as I predicted the third party well has dried up very quickly.

Eh, I don’t know. I was never really into the F-Zero games but I did enjoy Diddy Kong Racing. I’ll keep my eye on this if it turns out to be true and hope that it turns out to be something that I’ll like.

As long as the existing franchises are profitable, Nintendo will continue to make games for them. Like the old saying goes: "If it ain't broke, why fix it?"

Remember the PS1/N64 era, when every company made mario kart clones?

We had rugrats racer, South Park racer, Loony Tones racer, Star Wars racer and so on. And all those mario kart clones were absolutely horrible.

And now its happening again.

Lol. They'd do Star Fox Racer before F-Zero Infinity (TM Locopath)? How very Nintendo of them :P

Yes it was, but just saying a new game is "like game X" doesn't mean much.

Pretty much, Retro should be making megaton action/adventure/RPG games like Horizon Zero Dawn imo. 2D platformers and kart racers seem very wasteful for the PRIME devs.

I agree with this. Retro's talents feel pretty wasted on Donkey Kong, and if the rumors are true, a racing game. Their DK games are awesome and I don't think whatever they do next will be bad, but Retro can make way more ambitious stuff than these things.

But Nintendo usually don't want what their fans wants.. I think they didn't even like F-Zero GX, and Miyamoto himself said he doesn't understand why people want more F-Zero. That game was a masterpiece, you fucking idiots. We want more of that. What the **** is hard to understand? /F-Zero rant.

Yes, true of course. Actually, come to think of it, Metroid Prime 3 wasn't that great imo. They might have lost some flair in the adventure game making department.. I'm also very OK with them using Starfox for this. I'm not a fan at all of the classic Starfox games, and Starfox Zero for Wii U seemed to suck as well. I really liked SF Adventures, though. And I like the characters, so it's nice for me to see them being used for something else than classic Starfox.

@Litchie: I don't think that quote was related to F-Zero GX specifically. He said that they outsourced F-Zero games in the past and were disappointed with the results, but this could have been referring to GBA titles, or even sales rather than quality.

Actually, Miyamoto was producer of F-Zero GX and had this to say about the game:

Miyamoto thought the collaboration resulted in a "true evolution of the F-Zeroseries", enhancing the simulation of racing at high speeds and expanding the "F-Zero world on a grand scale." Source.

So my guess is that these disappointments came from F-Zero games on GBA and not F-Zero GX.

Ah, that's very nice to hear that they acknowledge what made GX good. Very nice. Thanks for clearing that up. :P I'm gonna keep up hope for a new one in the vein of GX.

@Litchie: You know, it's strange that they won't give the series a shot but they're willing to continue the Star Fox brand even after Star Fox Zero was both a critical and commercial flop. I think Shigeru Miyamoto is just extremely fond of the brand. Granted, F-Zero hasn't sold well in the past either but I feel like it deserves a chance. Look at how Fire Emblem turned things around. Why can't they do the same with F-Zero?

I don't know what it is Retro Studios have cooking, but I'm looking forward to seeing it. They're one of Nintendo's best development teams. It would be nice to get a more multi-threaded and competitive racer, and a proper alternative to Mario Kart (which is more of a casual, party racer).

Yeah, that is indeed strange. But so is their destroying of Paper Mario and a bunch of other weird stuff they do.

I agree completely about that it would be nice with an alternative to Mario Kart. F-Zero would fill the void of a faster more competitive racer perfectly. If this rumor is true, I hope this game can do that as well.

@Litchie: With Paper Mario, I believe their intentions were to separate it from the Mario & Luigi RPG games as they were very similar in terms of design. However, the resulting titles really didn't reach an audience. Heck, even the Mario & Luigi series has become a little more dull in recent entries...

Man, why not just a Star Fox game that doesn't suck. A game needs the weight of its name to sell a spin-off and right now Star Fox is in need of some serious rehabilitation.

If it's an adventure/racer like Diddy Kong I'm all for it... if not it's really redundant with Mario Kart already being a thing.

@onesiphorus: Tell you why. Because it is broke. Nintendo's reach aside from the craze which was the wii (sold as a craze to outsiders) the company's influence has been falling gen on gen. Switch is going better than Wii U but let's be honest, I think it could be doing a lot better with more diversity from Nintendo.

You want a tennis game? Mario. Fighting game? Mario. Racing game? Mario. Football game? Mario. Puzzle game? Mario. I'm only surprised they resisted making splatoon about Mario.
