https://segmentnext.com/2020/08/24/playstation-5-ssd-reserves-175gb-for-os-leaving-650gb-for-games-rumor/

Take this with a huge grain of salt. Hopefully it is not true that the system uses 175GB of the available 825GB and instead it is a 1TB drive that uses 175GB to make it the advertised "825GB"

Why would a console OS take almost 200gb?

Damn! PS fans are getting the raw end of the deal with almost half the space of its competition. Its like gaming on the Series S 512GB but at full price.🤣

Its rumor, chill.

The amount of salt that has to be swallowed on this forum on a daily basis is quite unhealthy. Particularly with threads concerning the PS5.

Not even Windows uses that much space. Might need a mountain of salt to go with that rumour.

People believing that needs to see a doctor. Even Windows doesn't require that much and Whatever OS PS5 have will be based on Linux which can be easily stripped of any non essential parts and is also extremely efficient.

Does it really matter? I mean the xb1 UI is complete shit show and was universally panned by all critics and many users and there gonna use it again for x-series. Everything is a PC now according to Phil no more generations xb1 ui = x-series x ui.

At least with Sony you get a brand new UI ever generation who cares how much space it uses its new and better xbox ui is still shitty and lags.

I brought up a question regarding this months ago, but folks didn’t understand what I meant, or I didn’t phrase it well. Let’s try again.

If the ssd is going to be used as a type of RAM of sorts, and used to aid the hardware in other ways, every console will need the same amount of resources in order for devs to be able to implement these features. Meaning, a chunk of the ssd will need to be reserved for system functions, correct? And this is beyond the OS footprint.

More proof the ps5 will be a terrible machine. Hopefully it plays those third person movie games with ease though.

Not how it works. 825GB isn't really 825GB because that's not how data is calculated. We use decimals instead of binaries to calculate storage. 825GB is really about 750GB. Add the OS and there you go.

Still doesn't explain where a couple of dozens GB went but it's nowhere near 200GB missing.

175GBs for an OS is pretty enormous. Perhaps that number takes into account over-provisioning as well?

The standard is ~7% so you'd only have ~767.25GB usable without the OS.

~118GB for the OS would be a bit more realistic considering it's supposed to be able to suspend multiple games etc.

I think expandable storage is going to be a must for any big gamer regardless of system. I know at least for Series X there will be external HDD support for BC games which should take care of my immediate needs for a while. I think post release, pricing of compatible storage solutions will be something to compare.

I'm sure there will be space reserved for the suspend and resume feature. Need extra space for downloads and extracting. Also if games are taking advantage of the bleeding edge speeds the files need to be sequential. So there needs to be room to move things around as the data gets fragmented over time.

It's not crazy to think the OS could reserve at least 100GB if not more.

500GB is plenty for me, but I can see this being an issue for others. Thankfully Sony is allowing off-the-shelf PCIe 4.0, NVMe 1.4, M.2 drives, which are getting pretty cheap, less than $200 for a TB.

No they're not. Not one off the shelf drive so far would work on ps5, and Sony have stated they hope to have supported drives by launch.

You're right. I forgot NVMe 1.4 drives haven't been commercially launched yet. Supposed to very soon I think. Partners have had demo units since last year.

Also I bet you a normal PCIe gen 3 drive would work just fine at 4+ GB/sec. Maybe I will try it out for funsies. Eh I'm sure someone will. *shrug*

Yes! It will take external drives and they are not going to be using proprietary drives for SSD expansion. Series X is the ones with the proprietary drives.

Maybe they made the drive super fast because they know you'll be installing and uninstalling games so fast due to the small storage space, they didn't want you to get upset.

"Guys we know you can only install like three games, but the drive is super fast so it's OK! Y'all have 2 GB/second internet right?"

Considering the sum of both parts is 1TB, i would say/hope 825GB are usable.

Sony said they would support standard M.2 form factor.

They are referring to PCIe gen 4, presumably with NMVe 1.4 controllers. The NVMe 1.4 controller being the part that isn't available yet.

I have a feeling you could put any old M.2 NVMe SSD in there and it would work though. M.2 is electrically the same as PCIe x4. M.2 comes in many lengths.

We'll see how they plan validating SSDs. These are all pre-existing standards though.

If it's using 175GB of 1TB it's actual usable storage would actually be 756GB, not 825GB. 1TB drives always have only 931GB usable anyway.

omg you believe that xbox sound card is better than the tempest lmao. the 3d sounds going to sound just as good as dolby without your pic of your ear. now once they find your sound it will be sound even better. when using surround sound they both will sound the same until sony updates to have 3d sound coming out of the speakers.

400gb less memory now? you think this is real? if any thing if its 175 gigs then they have a 1tb ssd that 175 gigs used = 825 gigs.

If they are using some of the drive as a cache maybe this is correct, storage is not the only use of a disk.
