https://www.tweaktown.com/news/71606/report-playstation-5-overheating-issues-causing-sony-to-panic/index.html

Why hasn't Sony showed the PlayStation 5 yet? Rumor has it the system runs so hot that Sony still hasn't locked down a final design for the console.

New reports suggest Sony is panicking over significant PS5 overheating issues. Supposed unnamed dev sources tell reporters like Windows Central's Dan Rubino and Jez Corden that the console is simply belting out too much heat for the cooling array to handle.

Everything from the 7nm AMD SoC to the ultra-fast 5.5GB/sec PCIe 4.0 SSD are generating pretty substantial thermals, and Sony's solution may not be on par with the Xbox Series X's huge 130mm fan and vapor chamber cooler. The PS5's variable GPU scaling adds another potential layer of worry to the heat management issues, especially since the console will scale its GPU power on a game-by-game basis.

The heat problems may force Sony to redesign system's cooling and chassis design. Reports say current PS5 design is failing due to overheating and compare it to the Xbox 360's dreaded RRoD thermal issues. Now we understand why the PS5 devkit has massive ventilation.

Previous PS5 concepts show a strange X-shaped case with side ventilation, but this may be inadequate. It's possible Sony's next-gen console could look more like the Xbox Series X's Mini-ITX tower design that pulls heat from the bottom up.

With great power comes the need for great thermal dissipation and cooling solutions. Any enthusiast PC gamer knows all about proper push-pull configurations, CPU cooling, heat sinks--the works. Without proper cooling, your components aren't going to last long belting out 4K resolution gaming, especially 1080p 120FPS with ray tracing and other effects turned on.

In the past, Sony has gotten away with passable cooling solutions for its consoles--the PS4 Pro still sounds like a jet engine--but the PlayStation 5 will require something much more specialized to dissipate heat from the 10.9TFLOP GPU, 8-core Zen 2 CPU, 16GB of GDDR6 RAM, and especially the M.2 NVMe SSD.

Apparently Sony has made a special cooling design for the PS5 that'll drive up costs. The overheating reports clash with other past reports of the PlayStation 5's cooling system.

Sources told Bloomberg in February that Sony is spending extra on a more powerful and efficient cooling solution for the PS5. The rise in per-unit manufacturing costs is making it harder for Sony to pinpoint a final consumer pricetag for the console.

If the reports are true, Sony could buy itself some time by delaying the PS5 due to the coronavirus outbreak. The company was careful not to make strong commitments to shipping the PlayStation 5 in 2020 and warned investors COVID-19 could interrupt and delay key first-party PlayStation exclusives.

There's a chance the reports aren't true and it's just another bit of gas for the fiery console war that's raging. It still begs to question why Sony hasn't revealed the PlayStation 5 yet...especially this late in the game. Manufacturing of the console is undoubtedly underway as we speak and I doubt Sony would ship so many systems knowing a good portion of them would fail due to overheating. But then again, they did ship the PS3 with the Yellow Light of Death.

The PS5 will release in Holiday 2020, and it may cost $499.

This needs to be taken with a large pinch of salt because the source is unnamed. Hopefully this turns out to be false.

Sony in shambles, serves them right for coasting with the console lead. The only way to get me to buy a PS5 is for Bloodborne 4k 60fps upgrade. Other than that, my PC is awaiting a new video card.

All consoles except the Xbox One (OG), have had heating problems. I doubt this will be any different. I wonder what engineering f%$& up will be in it this time.

I've got $25 they went with cheap thermal paste, and I'll add an extra $5 if it's an undersized aluminum heatsink strapped to the entire APU.

I have no idea what PS5 looks like, so can't judge how Sony's having heating issues. Best wait until they reveal the console before discussing airflow.

Wow, a system that's not even out yet is already affecting consumers with overheating issues.

I wish I was as gullible as the TC.

Maybe it was indeed only supposed to be a 9.2TF console and they overclocked to close the power gap with teh SeX on paper, but invited whole new host of issues. Would also make sense why we haven't seen a working one yet, plan changing last second likely means they're scrambling to find new cooling and casing solutions. This also came up in prior rumors weeks back on them struggling to keep production costs under $450.

Anyhow, I got a great idea, just add a loud fan bigger and faster than the one on the PS4, call it the 12th man, just imagine what all than winning would feel like:

I'm inclined not to believe this because the article is from tweaktown and they post any rumor that they come across.

Maybe this explains better why the TLOU Part 2 was delayed. Maybe the PS5 will be punted to 2021 so they can fix their overheating issues.

Jet turbines don't cool anything though. They just move air from outside of the engine into a compression chamber. The compression chamber isn't responsible for cooling the positively charged negative ions either so your point is invalid.

Try again.

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/sapphire-radeon-rx-5700-xt-nitro-special-edition/34.html

In terms of shipping RX 5700 XT products with near 2Ghz clock speed, Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT Nitro+has 1,996 Mhz average and median 2,000 Mhz clock speed.

----

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/msi-radeon-rx-5700-xt-gaming-x/33.html

MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming X has 1,987 Mhz average and median 2,008 Mhz clock speed.

Mentioned SKUs are RDNA v1. Cooling solutions are NVIDIA RTX level quality.

PC AIB vendors would have a field day on factory shipped overclock models.

Buying AMD GPU with reference coolers are not recommended.

For Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT Nitro+

Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT Nitro+ is approaching RTX 2070 Super which is the entry-level TU104 SKU.

PS5 GPU solution can be fast when coupled with the appropriate cooling solution while XSX GPU is just faster.

Sony may have to cross over to PC master race class GPU cooling solution just as MS's XSX mini-tower.

My jet turbine comment is about force feedback, not a cooling argument. A jet turbine moves a lot of air.

Historically, Sony hasn't shipped a modern gaming PC.

MS's vapor cooling solution for X1X was ripped from NVIDIA's technology from the Surface desktop PC or OEM partner gaming PC resell+customistion product lines i.e. Microsoft resells branded gaming PCs with their MS's customizations.

For example, https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/cyberpowerpc-gamer-supreme-liquid-cool-slc3600mst-gaming-desktop/8r3lx2h5tpph Microsoft reselling gaming PCs with RTX 2080.

Sony has exited PC market many years ago.

@tormentos: Its just crazy how rumours always appear and are talked up by Microsoft / Xbox centric journalists that are only backed up by some random tweet that mentions some "inside source" (which is either another tweet or random post on a forum or pastebin lol) every time there's a breadcrumb of new information about the PS5.

They'll even go as far to say that Mark Cenrybis flat out lying about his work. Cerny says PS5 is based on RDNA2 ... rumor afterwards - "PS5 is not actually full RDNA2 because he didnt specifically confirm this feature that's only RDNA2. It must be RDNA1.5.".

Bruh. It's 100% FUD.

Desktop AIO is still classified as a desktop PCs i.e. it's not mobile. My old ITX gaming PC is more luggable mobile than MS's Surface Studio.

MS Surface Studio is not a true AIO when the base section has the PC CPU and GPU components.

From https://www.tweaktown.com/news/70636/playstation-5-cooling-system-is-lavish-makes-the-ps5-more-expensive/index.html

Date: Feb 15, 2020

Bloomberg reporting Sony opted to "lavish more" on the cooling system to make sure "heat dissipation from the powerful chips housed inside the console isn't an issue".

Bloomberg wrote: "Most of the components for the console have been locked down, the people said, including the cooling system, which is unusually expensive at a few dollars per unit", adding that "typically, companies would spend less than a dollar" on the cooling system -- but Sony opted to "lavish more" on the PlayStation 5 cooling system.

GitHub's PS5 leak was nearly accurate.

We know PS5's "lavish more" cooling solution is above PS4 and PS4 Pro at Feb 15, 2020 time period.

Sources say Sony's PlayStation 5 runs so hot it's forcing new hardware cooling and case redesigns

Actually, panicking over something is good since the problem has been identified during R&D phase and induces higher motivation to fix it.
