Rumor: PlayStation has acquired rights to Very Popular Konami IP

With a new PlayStation Showcase rumored to be happening this month, there have been a number of reports on what could possibly be revealed. A new trailer for Hogwarts Legacy is looking more and more likely, at the very least. However, another rumor has been doing the rounds recently about PlayStation announcing the return of an “extremely popular” franchise in Q4 2022.

The news came from VGnewsinsider on Twitter, who later said they would have more information on whether it was first party or third party franchise. However, in a new tweet, they revealed that, “PlayStation have privately acquired the rights to a very popular Konami IP. It is rumoured to be the game I referred to in my earlier leak.” More information has been promised for next week.

The obvious assumption is that this is either Silent Hill or Metal Gear Solid. Rumors for remakes and/or new games in both franchises have been circulating for a while now with Sony’s name coming up frequently. No formal announcement has ever been made though so take this latest report with a grain of salt. Also keep in mind that this is rumored to be the game mentioned in the last leak – for all we know, Sony’s revival (which may be a new Sly Cooper and/or inFamous game) could be entirely different from this purported deal.

With regards to Konami, Sony licensing the company’s IP to make a new game makes a lot more sense than outright buying it. We’ll need to wait for actual concrete details though so stay tuned in the meantime.

All I know is that when Sony events are coming rumors start coming from all over, but the one I want to see come true is Motorstorm making a return. I don't imagine Konami would sell Silent Hill or Metal Gear Solid, but like OP says licensing is more likely so possible maybe on day we'll see proper sequels to these IPs. That being said I don't think Sony needs to license these, just fund Kojima to make spiritual successors and I think Sony fans would be excited all the same.

Hopefully it'll be Zone of the Enders as that game needs to return from its slumber.

If its MGS, i prefer something like remake but not sequel. I think the MGS4 ending is perfect already. Silent hill would be dope too.

Whatever it is, it's better off going to anyone else instead of staying with Konami. Konami is already dead to me.

No way is MGS unless it's the always rumored MGS Remake. I think it will be either a new Sly Cooper or Silent Hill ... but honestly and when it comes to Konami, i wouldn't hold my breath for any good deal whatsoever.

Sony owns Sly Cooper, it was never a Konami IP.

Certainly better then sitting with Konami who clearly have no plans on making a game for it. I’d say that it’s most likely Silent Hill.

I was saying it a while ago that Sony's answer to Microsoft's acquisitions is to go after Konami IPs. In fact, that's what I was hoping would happen. Konami doesn't deserve those IPs anymore, so it's better off in Sony's hands... Now all Sony needs to do is acquire Kojima Productions.

I'd love to see a new Silent Hill game or even a remake of the first two. Anything but MGS which I couldn't care less about.

The thing about MGS is I see people asking for remakes and remasters of the earlier games all the time. That's something that would appeal to Sony. They could deliver a new game and milk the back catalogue at the same time. It's not a series I've ever been interested in so I'm hoping it's something else.

Death Stranding 2 with less mountain climbing, more weapons and vehicles and ways to get around, more 'proper' enemies etc is something I'd be right into. I liked the first one a lot but can see where it could easily be improved.

Because leaving it with Konami so they can do nothing but plaster some artwork on Pachinko machines is much better for the consumer.

MGS and Castlevania would be huge wins . I couldn't care less about Silent Hill which has always been a poor mans Resident Evil.

However i feel like i've heard this rumor at least half a dozen times and nothing ever comes of it.

Silent Hill would be prime given they garner a team worthy of continuing it's legacy akin to the first four titles. The what if's of Silent Hills still haunt me.
