Rumor: Erdrick (Dragon Quest) is the next Smash Bros DLC character, now may be datamined

If this is true, and likely is, this will be an excellent pick. Unlike Joker, Erdrick is a massive deal as Dragon Quest is the most popular gaming franchise in Japan and the first three games revolves around him (or her). Add the fact that DQXI is coming to the Switch as well as DQ Builders 2, along with series history with Nintendo (all main games are on Nintendo platforms) and this pick is an absolute no brainer. A DQXI skin is also extremely nice.

And also in this rumor is Persona 5 coming to Switch, which makes the Joker announcement have more sense. But still nonsensical is the timing. If P5 was coming to Switch, why not announce the character for Smash later when P5 is announced? Nintendo screwed up with the Joker announcement, but they can redeem themselves with Erdrick, a certified heavy hitter they need for DLC.

It seems now that a file named for the Dragon Quest hero class has been datamined.

Erdrick would be an excellent addition to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Hopefully that Dragon Quest XI game isn’t too far away as well. I think Joker is a very cool addition as well and I sure hope that rumour of Persona 5 coming to the Switch is true. Would really love to play that game.

This wouldn't do much for me since I never played a Dragon Quest game. I'm just happy Joker is in the game, that one is a big deal to me.

Never realized DQ was the biggest game in Japan. Always thought it was Final Fantasy...This is great news tho because I love DQ a lot . DQ11 is my favourite game this year and I will double dip when it comes out on Switch :)

Final Fantasy is no where near as popular as Dragon Quest in Japan. People line up in droves in Japan whenever DQ is released. DQXI sold 2 million in 2 days (and 4 million total, without much West support) in Japan, which is more than lifetime sales of Persona 5.

Sure but I would argue FFVII is still THE rpg in Japan. Hence Cloud being the first in smash bros. But yeah overall, DQ is bigger than FF.

Could be but FF VII is still seen as the JRPG in Japan and the world. Hence Cloud being in smash and Japan, world going crazy with the FFVII remake announcement.

I know nothing about Joker and have never played a Persona game, so that announcement was lukewarm. This sounds cooler. If this is true, I hope Erdrik isn't just another Marth or Roy clone.

Second FFVII does not even hold a candle to Pokemon as well. Pokemon Red and Blue far outsold FFVII worldwide, for example.

Erdrick will probably have Zap magic, as he is basically a warrior mage.

It gets people talking and builts hype. Persona 5 is easily the best jrpg of this gen (fight me xenoblade 2, ff, octopath, dqxi fans)

If DQ III is THE landmark as you say, why isn't their a remake or anything at all? Why is Cloud the first big JPRG character in Smash.

Facts are facts, FFVII is not THE JRPG in Japan, its not even close. Also DQIII has been remade several times.

No, its the most overrated with its story problems, terrible pacing, poor dungeon design, bad localization, and at times, serious subject matter is handled poorly.

Agreed. Persona 5 was worth the wait and completely met and exceeded my expectations. Definitely the best JRPG of this gen.

That's a cool character. I definitely approve of Erdrick. Hopefully they do a throwback to his NES days and the armor, helmet, and sword are all summons or something... they also HAVE to use that sound riff for using a hurtful spell. Epic.

Final Fantasy 7 is only really popular in the states. Dragon Quest is crazy big in Japan. There are a ton of dragon quest edition consoles and hand helds.

If the rumors are true then this is really lame. I've heard:

The Joker (Persona 5)

Erdrick (Dragon Quest)

Steve (Minecraft)

Doom Guy (DOOM)

Ryu (Ninja Gaiden)

plus we already know about the Piranha Plant (wtf?)

Erdrick and Ryu are definitely fitting picks, both have Nintendo history. Both Dragon Quest/Warrior and Ninja Gaiden were huge NES hit series, and once again Dragon Quest is Japan's most popular gaming franchise. In fact, Nintendo themselves have published some DQ games in the West as well as having a Mario/DQ crossover.

DOOM actually also has plenty of Nintendo history.

Minecraft is the second best selling game of all time and its on the Switch with Nintendo characters.

Only Joker would be a reach.

I also heard Alex and a skin of Master Chief are in that slot.

DQVII even outsold FFVII there and DQ actually has made more profit than the FF series despite FF having more overall game sales due to merchandising and manga sales.

And grossly misrepresent the character. Ness and Lucas were essentially based on Erdrick's formula. Which is to say, a lot of spellcasting in there, and both earthbounders have plenty of psionics in their movesets.
