Holidays 2018, brand new AMD technology begins ramping, according to CEO. Speculation is this is the new Atari. OMGWTFBBQ!
If any company is over things called Jaguar, it's this one.

Legit want to see what games look like for this, now.
Lisa Su's statement on new semi-custom design win for year 2018 with game console business context is legit i.e. "one additional design that will ramp in the second half of 2018".

It's rather smallish desktop game console. Ataribox doesn't seem to include an optical drive.
7 nm FinFET would make it a killer box.
14 nm+ /16 nm+ FinFET in a smallish box would be less killer box.
For comparison with Xbox One X.

If AMD continues to use Samsung's foundries, it's more likely it will be 10nm. 10LPP at minimum, 8LPP at best.

AMD hasn't used Samsung 's foundries option... Atm, it's Global Foundry's 14 nm FinFET (PC CPUs, PC GPUs) and TSMC's 16 nm FinFET (game consoles).

Global Foundry has a new fab with 12 nm FD-SOI in Germany.
Oh snap. Well, things got interesting then. According to the last road map I read, this would be the sweet spot for their 7nm DUV foundries.
AMD must be prepping for something different, because that Atari console is going to mimic the NES classic and not the big dogs. Why on earth would a crowd funded console be a powerhouse?
http://www.barrons.com/articles/amd-vaults-10-ceo-su-says-expect-another-semi-custom-project-in-2018-1501022700
I asked Su about the “semi-custom” business, where AMD supplies chips for Microsoft’s (MSFT) “Xbox,” and for Sony’s (SNE) PlayStation console. Su noted during the call that while AMD chips will be in the “Xbox One X” that comes out in November, nevertheless, semi-custom is expected to decline in Q4, after the big ramp up in Q3.
I asked if it’s too soon to talk about next semi-custom projects. She said there is “one additional design that will ramp in the second half of 2018,” and said AMD will wait until the customer is ready to discuss that project. I asked what industry it might be in, and Su replied “let’s just call it embedded."

That's what I believe as well, when I first broke news of the Atari Box in SW a while back. If anything, I stated this maybe an Indie Gaming machine w/a lot of Atari classics.

Welp, there's a dash of cold water.

Lisa Su answered like a politician i.e. "Embedded" can mean many different things.
Intrigued to see what will come of this, but my expectations are very low.
If its just going to be a retro system that emulates old Atari games and is an IOS system, its whatever... no one will care.
That said there is a small market they could potentially corner here that has not been done, and that would be if they could land the rights to MAME and arcade machines say.. pre-2002 or something. An arcade system would be interesting and i think it would actually sell. I know of all the IOS/retro things out there, that would be the only one id buy. I am however betting that the rights to these games would be the biggest pain the ass to get and after cost, they probably couldnt turn a profit.
The article says:
However, in an interview last month, Atari CEO Fred Chesnais confirmed that the Ataribox would be based on PC technology.
WTF does that even mean?
"We are building a car and its going to be based on "four wheels on the ground" technology"
X86 platform.

Does it though? It seems to me that they would flat out say this if this was the case. Instead they go with something super vague.

I dunno... Its the only thing it could mean, unless they are intentionally being vague so we assume its X86 and get excited and hype the console for them.
Personally I don't see this console being anything more than a nvidia shield type of product, the main reason is that games are 20-30GB in size and without a disk drive you would rely on storage... Unless this thing is packing a 2TB HDD I don't see it being a console that will have modern multi-platform tittles, which in a way gives you a idea of the performance it may have.
I see nothing to get excited about, its not like this thing is going to be bringing a library of exclusives with it so I just don't see the point of its existence... Another device to play games I can already play on my PC, tablet and console?... Why?

Scorpio we hardly knew ya the pro's been out an kickin butt for awhile now
And the PS5 in 2019 is going to bury the Scorpio alive.

Another in three years? Erm, the user base is already dwindling, that would be the final nail in the coffin. Buying Xbox is too risky, the plug could be pulled at any moment.
@Shewgenja: someone please clue me in on this whole Atari deal. Retro console? Or legit new console?
Does Atari even have the funds to go full blown R&D on a new console? I would expect retro because it went so well for Nintendo
@vfighter: Just looked through your posting history. Yep you're a cow. Funny you call me out when I talk about damage control, but don't call Shewenga out at his constant anti MS rhetoric. Besides how does this new console mean R.I.P Scorpio like TC put? It shouldn't have even been apart of the conversion. The TC even blasts BC and was happy when X1 didn't dominate in sales. So don't even try to act like you're holier than thou. You're a pathetic cow like 3/4 of these boards. Until you call out both sides, shut up.

You can say the same thing about the NES Classic and SNES mini. The Classic sold like hotcakes and the mini is expected to sell even more. That is the reason why.
To all the whining crybabies defending Xbox One X in this thread:
This whole thread was meant to be a joke from the gek-go!
Pretty much. If the whole premise of why Scorpio is a thing is power alone, then the news is that there is a completely new paradigm to achieve power and it launches in 2018 no matter what the label on the plastic box is. If there is more to Scorpio, and by extension the XBox, then this should be good lols for everyone.
My only problem is how many people are like seriously grey-faced about this. I mean, come on lol I find their lack of faith, disturbing.

The crowd funding level would need to dwarf Star Citizen's. Of course the crowd funding could be proof of concept to attract investors and hedge funds, which was also the original idea behind Star Citizen.

Tough to make a joke when everyone is already laughing at you.
Tough to pass this off as a joke when the TC uses anything and everything to discredit MS at every turn. The constant bashing from the TC then he creates a thread once again bashing MS and we're supposed to believe it was a joke AFTER it backfired?
Yeah ok cows, keep trying to push that narrative.
