so this is it , I dunno how legit it is ..

=================

======================

NVIDIA's RTX 3080 graphics card features bold new design with bi-directional fans, irregular PCB and curved heatsink

NVIDIA's new RTX 3080 features a very cyber-punk yet whimsical design whose inspiration I can't seem to put a finger on. I for one love the symmetric and futuristic looking shape (the graphics card isn't actually blue by the way, that is just the packaging film on it. It is still very much polished metal). The materials used seem to be very high quality although I cannot tell from the picture whether the edges used are still aluminum like the RTX 2080 or the company has reverted back to plastic.

Here are some key design considerations of the new NVIDIA RTX 3080 graphics card:

  1. The fans are bi-directional. One fan has an open-intake at the bottom while the other has an open-intake at the top. While it is hard to judge the exact direction of each fan I would assume the bottom one to be a static pressure fan while the top one throws air out in an attempt to keep air flowing through the fins.
  2. The heat sink is curved. This is a very interesting design because normally it would disrupt airflow but NVIDIA seems to be attempting a push full configuration which would rely on pressure differentials to keep the air flowing and might work wonders with this design philosophy.
  3. The PCB is irregularly shapes and ends when it touches the heatsink. In the image below, only the grey plastic part of the RTX 3080 houses the PCB, the fan section does not. This confirms previous rumors that had indicated a small and irregular shaped PCB for NVIDIA's upcoming Ampere GPUs.
  4. This is almost certainly a Founder's Edition (if NVIDIA still wants to call these that) GPU. A design like this would be incredibly hard to tool and machine and AIBs would almost certainly prefer to go with their traditional Heatpipe and triple fan designs if NVIDIA allows them. Unless we see some form of packaging with NVIDIA supplying these parts (not going to happen) what you are looking at is almost certainly a founders edition run in limited quantity (and very high MSRP).

According to old rumors the RTX 3080 will ship with a GA104 GPU, and replace the existing RTX 2080 with 48 SMs (3072 CUDA cores). This is very slightly more than the RTX 2080 at 46 SMs. Coupled with higher performance throughput and improved RTX cores you are looking at a significant performance increase if this turns out to be true - in fact, it is estimated to be just slightly less in performance than the RTX 2080 Ti current generation flagship. The RTX 3080 GPU will be coupled with 8GB/16GB of vRAM and a 256-bit bus width. Edit: New rumors have indicated that the card may actually ship with a GA102 core that is extremely powerful.

While there is no word on pricing yet, we have a feeling NVIDIA will take a much more lenient approach with MSRP (at the very least for the custom AIB parts) this time around as compared to Turing considering the fact the former was very slow to gain traction due to its large price tag. The company is also shifting to the 7nm process with the Ampere series so it will have access to significant cost savings - some of which it should pass on to consumers.

Hmmm, those heatsink fins look...kinda fishy if you ask me. If they are supposed to be the actual fins and not some plastic cover for the looks, it is fake. The way they are designed doesn't let the airflow around them.

Still, I don't have any plans to upgrade anytime soon. (CPU yes but not GPU)

News is getting closer. I really hope we see a significant power increase, and hopefully not a 2080ti price. I was happy paying around $1000 for my 2080, but $2000 for the ti was ridiculous.

While there are PC exclusives, it doesn't matter because all games benefit from more power regardless if they are multiplat or exclusive.

Why $2000 for 2080 Ti? I bought Zotac Amp and MSI Gaming X Trio for $1600 CAD each.

Taxes suck for sure, but we can't factor that in to the price of the product as that is an external factor. Some people don't even have to pay taxes where they live.

That's definitely true, but it's around what I would have paid regardless. Yeah, States have lower sales tax rates and the UK's rates are outright crazy (20% IIRC).

Pretty wild design. Can't imagine it being easy, and therefore cheap, to manufacture. Just hope the Founder Edition doesn't affect the OEM prices.

Otherwise, pretty cool, but not for me. Looking forward to the RTX 3070 instead.

you are looking at a significant performance increase if this turns in fact, it is estimated to be just slightly less in performance than the RTX 2080 Ti current generation flagship.

Yeah so that's piss-weak. The 2080 is about 25% slower than a 2080 Ti so you're telling me a less than 25% increase in performance over an already underwhelming RTX 20 series? I hope to god it's more because I was hoping for the 3080 to stomp out the 2080 Ti by a significant margin.

That would be decent for a 3070 and amazing for a 3060. It's shit for a 3080.

@Juub1990: i wouldn't be surprised if it's underwhelming - I bet they've focused on raytracing optimization and more incremental improvements on efficiency and power (RX480-580 type mentality)

Unless every single game features ray tracing from this point forward then they'd shoot themselves in the foot doing that. 20% increase in raster performance after more than two years would be utterly unacceptable.

Yeah I don't buy the "slightly weaker than a 2080 Ti" either. The 3070 will be slightly weaker than a 2080 Ti at worst. Not the 3080.

I went out of my way to get a case without a glass panel. I don't want the light inside distracting me. PC gamers are funny, placing so much importance on flashy lights and shit. "The lights make it go faster."

Trolling? Not everything has to be trolling. I anticipated that the performance increase isn't going to be as high as 40 or 50% and that the new 3070 performance was not going to be equal to the 2080 Ti as some suggested. I am purely going off the article, just like everyone else. Not sure why you appear to take issue.

Certainly doesn't "seem" you were right because Westblade posted another rumor in complete contradiction with the article. Thus far nobody "seems" to be correct.

Hasn't the **80 series always been faster than the previous generation ti? RTX 2080 was faster than 1080 ti, GTX 1080 was faster than 980 ti etc. If this is slower than a 2080 ti that will he a bit embarrassing. Let's see what RDNA2 has.

Performance of these gpus are going to better than some of you think. Looking one thing alone hints at some big increases in IPC ie cache sizes. The Ampere GA 100 die has nearly has 50mb of L2 cache vs Volta GV 100 only had 6mb while RTX 2080ti has 5.5mb of L2. We should expect 10-12mb on the L2 cache for Ampere at least. We also should see upto 400mhz increase boost clocks over Turing's as well.

Shroud design weirdly reminds me of Gainward, but they don't have those kinds of design iirc.

EDIT: Oh, wait. They did. But the design is so far off from what I imagined.

I would agree with you both until the RTX line came out. The 2080 and the 1080Ti were VERY close performance wise. In the past we saw the XX70 cards matching/beating the Titan/Ti card from the previous line. Nvidia is only doing what AMD forces them to. AMD seems to be more than content competing with Nvidias midrange lineup.

They didn't move down to 7nm with Turing and they are for Ampere. That alone will ensure a good leap in performance.

A game doesn't need to be a PC exclusive to take advantage of high end PC hardware. Consoles and PCs have essentially the same hardware architecture, and a lot of the popular engines used to develop console games support high end features only really feasible on PC (such as ray-tracing).
