This Gen:

- H1z1 was the buzz until overwatch

- Overwatch had a lot of ground until PUBG came

- PUBG looked invincible for a few months until Fortnite which is pretty much killing Pubg right now

Meanwhile GTA 5 released in 2013 is still charting in the top 10 worldwide approaching 90 million units while getting constant updates.

The others can't last a year without fading away.

You can bet that RD2 will make Fortnite irrelevant once it's released.

This gen, the multiplayer king in both Coop and Pvp is clearly Rockstar, no competition.

And that's the problem. When Rockstar stuck gold on MP, they got lazy and greedy at the same time.

While I loved GTAV and enjoyed its multiplayer I wouldn’t say that Rockstar are the kings of multiplayer. I can think of a lot of other games that have a much better quality of online gameplay. Unless you’re just talking about popularity but I don’t really know about that either.

Not really. If you look beyond SW's narrow AAA scope, it's actually F2P games that are dominating online multiplayer right now. Last year, GTAV wasn't even among the top 10 highest-grossing games, which was dominated by F2P multiplayer games, many of which are older than GTAV, e.g. League of Legends (2009), Fantasy Westward Journey (2007), CrossFire (2007), Clash of Clans (2012).

90 million units, Wow let us say the average price of $45 for each copy that is over 4 billion dollars plus the money from the MP.

Yup Fortnite Battle Royale is like the new COD4/MW2 to all my console gaming friends now.

I'd say it's recognition worthy that Rockstar makes more from micro-transactions of GTA V than game sales, and it's impressive it has sold so much. Double-so considering their revenue generating success has completely escaped the ire of anti-microtransactions mobs across the internet. I'd say they are in exceptional position.

The average price has been $30 for the last few years. Its total gross, including MP, should now be around $3-4 billion.

kind of depends on how you measure it doesnt?

if you measure on sales then McDonalds is the 'king of restaurants' but a lot of people are not going to agree.

If we go on sales figures then the stupidist, most dumb down, basic, non challenging games will always be 'the king'

GTA Online sucked. I preferred Max Payne 3. Better movement, fewer loading screens, no boring driving around, better avatars. Too bad none of you played it.

Do you know when a retailer put's it on sale? they still had to buy the copy from Rockstar at whatever let's say $55. Them selling it for $30 has no impact on the wholesale price Rockstar sets. BestBuy or whatever store eats the loss

The wholesale price is usually around half of the retail price. You can see a breakdown of the average $60 retail price here:

What Your $60 Really Buys

If the retail price is $60, then the wholesale price would be around $30. Rockstar later reduced the standard retail price down to $30, which means their wholesale price would be around $15-20.

my buddy owns and runs a game store and told me the margins and they are like 5 to 7 dollars for a new game, this is in Canada. He makes money selling used games, controller mods and repairing consoles. And limits buying new games that may not sell well because they drop in price after a month leaving him eating the loss

What? A Rockstar title doesn't even register on the top10 when put up against active or concurrent users. Take a gander at games like LoL, WoW, Overwatch PC, Pubg, Fortnight, Dota, etc.

The top played online games are PC creations that are a joke on consoles or PC exclusives.

Not to mention IMO you can't be King of Multiplayer if the game has zero competitive play. Rockstar online is fully casual.

I laughed out loud when I saw this title.

League of legends, absolute king of all games this generation.

The end.
