I'll let people decide the meaning of "Retro" as I know it changes over time. But for me, I would say retro is PS2 era or before. Lately I've been recollecting some games. Just recently picked up WWF No Mercy N64. It's still the GOAT wrestling game, even today. For PS2 I picked up Viewtiful Joe 1&2, Silent Hill 2-4. For GameCube, picked up MGS Twin Snakes. How about you, SW? Retro systems/games that you still play?

Don't really play on retro systems at all, but I still dip into a lot of retro games. Not much recently though. This years been pretty great so far, too busy with new releases.

Couple of months back, played through most of the 2d Metroids. Did a couple of runs through the SM64 PC port. Some DoDonPachi resurrection here and there. And always have some time for Tetris.

Since I have (another) new stick arriving tomorrow, went ahead and reinstalled Fightcade 2.

I’ve always been a huge fan of PS1-PS2 games, I’ve been playing more of them now that they have a selection on PSPlus. I still bring my PSP every time I travel on a plane, always fun to play GTA or THUG2: Remix on the flight or in hotels at night.

Been a while since I turned them on, but yeah. Picked up another Sega arcade sports game recently (Beach Spikers.. remember when Sega weren't all Yakuza and Sonic?)

Saturn: Guardian Heroes, Last Bronx, Burning Rangers, Command & Conquer, Sega Rally, Highway 2000, Die Hard Trilogy, Fighters Megamix, Mystaria, Sonic 3D, Virtua Racing.

Mega Drive: Cannon Fodder, Earthworm Jim, Jungle Strike, Micro Machines Military, Outrun 2019, Rock N Roll Racing, Shadow Dancer, Story of Thor,

Master System: After Burner, Black Belt, GP Rider, Super Monaco GP, The Cyber Shinobi.

Game Gear: Shining Force, Super Off Road.

Mega CD: F1 World Championship, Jaguar XJ220, WWF Rage in the Cage.

Don’t really play on any previous systems much these days but I do enjoy playing retro games. Usually just play those via backwards compatibility and when they get rereleased on current systems. Haven’t played much retro stuff in awhile though. Too much stuff to play that’s getting released currently.

Never played WCW vs NWO Revenge, but I remember when it came out. My first start was Wrestlemania 2000 and then I thought No Mercy was the best. Tons of memories with friends.

I wish I had gotten more into Dreamcast and Saturn. I don't think I touched Saturn aside from maybe a random acquaintance owning one.

I believe it fits your definition, but we still have CE LANs every few months on original Xboxes. It's still an absolute blast.

Those N64 wrestling games are the best! I tried to setup a tournament in No Mercy, but our created characters wouldn't stay saved. I soldered in a new battery, but I either the new battery was already dead or if I just did it wrong. Sucks i failed, but it was still fun trying.

@SolidGame_basic: WCW World Tour I think it was that started the great N64 consoles Wrestling games, if nothing else the N64 has the best Wrestling games in history.

You should look into buying a Dreamcast/Saturn. Great consoles for fighting games, and Sega's own library for them is legendary, especially the Dreamcast. No company in history has put out the amount of great games in a 2yr period like Sega did with the Dreamcast, not even Nintendo.

@dimebag667: @last_lap btw, did you guys know the new AWE Wrestling game is being developed by Yuke's? They brought on the director from No Mercy and WcW/nWo Revenge to direct the game.

@SolidGame_basic: Thats good and all, but i've never watched AEW, so have no idea who most of them are. I doubt they make the control scheme like the N64 games, it would be some modern crap.

I don't even watch WWE anymore other than the terrible highlights they produce on their Youtube channel, seriously whoever runs that should be fired.

Been playing XGRA, Bloody Roar: PF, and Need for Speed: Underground on Gamecube recently. And I failed at an attempt to get Freelancer running on my current PC. Will try again though.

I've still got my PS2 hooked up and been collecting plenty of games for it lately. I just grabbed another 4 for it today. It's so fun to collect for.

Got really pissed off with RE8 and gave up on AAA games.

Then bought SF6 and became pissed off again.

But most of the games played this year and "retro".

Just replayed FF6 with the pixel remaster, but sadly can't collect/play retro due to limited space at my place.

@SolidGame_basic: Yeah the Attitude era was the best, it was crazy seeing them try to up the ante each week on what they could get away with. This PG era is absolute garbage, if there is a chair shot in the YT highlights, they literally freeze it a second before the shot and unfreeze it a second after the shot, PG is terrible.

I still play a lot of games from PS2 era and below. They have ridiculous amount of replay value compared to modern gaming. Idk why but I have no problem replaying PS1-PS2 era games but I moved on quickly after finishing modern games.

Currently replaying Xenosaga part 1 and Suikoden 3. Finished Shining Force 2 in March. Playing with an emulator tho.

Lol, Attitude was funnier too. Missed the Rock talking smack and making funny of people.

At least Suikoden 1 and 2 are being remastered. I remember trying to buy Suikoden 2 on eBay and the prices were $150-$200 range!

Yeah, I have a N64 with UltraHDMI and an Everdrive cartridge, so I have the whole library.

I enjoy it from time to time.

I also have a NES and SNES, but they're not hooked up. Also a bunch of portable systems such as a game gear and old game boys.

I don't do a ton of retro gaming though.

Yup, layout, spacing, basically just having arcade controls on your lap.

Assuming you grew up in US though, the lever itself won't feel like those old sticks. Happ stuff is more stiff, springy, and most of the cabs I played on had circle gates (round actuators).

I remember you saying you visit Japan though, if you've played in the arcades there, that's what most of these sticks are like.

@SolidGame_basic: @Last_Lap I've seen a couple AEW pay-per-views that were actually pretty good. Way better than current WWE, but that's not saying much. Them bringing on that dude at least makes me hopeful.

Maybe we're too small of a group, but it seems insane that someone new games in this style. Not just wrestling, but all the games we listed in that other thread. I know they don't make you Fortnite money, but they could make decent money. And make us happy.

I prefer not to use original hardware when there is an FPGA option. Later consoles that have HDMI I will try to use modded original hardware to get the best experience. In all cases I am able to host the games on my server and load them over the network so I don't need to worry about storing the games directly (or worse, dealing with discs, ew).

  • MiSTer FPGA for older consoles like NES, SNES, GB, GBA, Genesis, NeoGeo, PS1 (and Saturn in the works).
  • Modded, fat PS3 to run those and PS2 games.
  • Modded Wii U for those, Wii, and Gamecube games

One notable gap in my "ideal retro" lineup is N64. There is apparently a new HDMI mod available since the Ultra64 mod kinda disappeared. I might consider trying to do that.

What an interesting read. I actually feel kind of sad now that I don't have the PS3 fat, but my goal back then was to always wait for slim revisions. Which I did.

Prices for a PS3 fat are a bit bonkers right now. And retro handhelds are super close to running PS2 games now at good framerates, with often a cool widescreen mod because why not.

Overall I'm happy that I kept my brothers original 720p HDTV, it not only comes with HDMI, which is great for those 720p consoles (X360, ps3 and WiiU) but it also has an input for these suckers:

I only have two old consoles, not even sure if an Xbox 360 can be considered 'Retro', perhaps the PSP is.

For everything else it's emulation. Retro Arch when combined with 'Mega Bezel' is pretty amazing. I've waited ages for a set of shaders that look like a Real CRT. Or at least what I think a 'Real CRT' looks like lol.

I've got so many games for this covering quite a few platforms. But, my favourite games are still most arcade games from the 1980's and 90's which include Classics such as Operation Wolf, Operation Thunderbolt, Out Run, Super Hang-On, Final Fight and Golden Axe. I never seem to get bored with these old classics.

I really would like to get a Mister, I guess I'll need to pre-order one as there's never any available. For Mister, I'm more interested in the Amiga platform via FPGA.

@Bond007uk: Nice. FPGA kind of appeals to me too. Just wish it was a bit cheaper to get into 😞 Amiga was king but I was a poor boy.

How is Operation Wolf without the lightgun, btw? That game brings back so many memories... I'm a bit scared to spoil them now. 😅

Haven't played any retro games for a long time now, but when I do it's on the PC. Mostly Nintendo's games.

I don't have any retro systems (going by the TCs definition). The oldest i have is a PS3 which is in storage at the moment.

I'm back into the absolute hardware buster of a game known as....Baldurs gate enhanced edition. My poor PC is being brought to it's knees :P. I'm looking to finish the expansion for it.

Don't usually dip back into older games. From time to time I get an itch to replay old classics like a Link to the past or Castlevania IV but the classic genres are so well supported with new experiences it's tough to go back.

When I'm in the mood, I do; I played some Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Mega Man X on the Genesis and SNES a few weeks ago for example. I don't collect retro stuff any more though, unless there's a re-release from Limited Run or something.

I see that you are a big fan of Sega. Me too, and I still think it is a shame that Sony killed the Dreamcast and brought Sega out of the hardware business.

Crazy Taxi is on my top 10 list of all time greatest games. It is super addicting, and the gameplay is actually deceptively deep and challenging. For some strange reason, Crazy Taxi 2 never kept my interest for more than a few hours.

Wouldn't you rather play Super Monaco GP on Megadrive than Master System? I would.

Do you actually own a 32x or are you playing on emulator?

@SolidGame_basic:Yeah, but personally I think the Sega Saturn 6-button controller is the best ever for fighting games such as Street Fighter.

@SolidGame_basic:Feel free to disagree, but ECW Hardcore Revolution on PS1 is the greatest wrestling game ever. It is ridiculously fun and features colorful commentary by Joey Styles. I never disagreed more with review scores.

NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, PS2, Gamecube.

The older Halo games on Xbox as well. I don't count anything Xbox 360 or more recent as "retro"

@R4gn4r0k: My original launch PS3 died (yellow light). I bought it used a few months after launch just to make sure I had dedicated PS1 and PS2 hardware inside. Ugh. I only bought another one a few years ago for about $250. I took it all apart and refreshed the thermal paste and even delided the processors just to make sure that sucker stays cool. Pretty sure the original overheated.

Never played it. Outside the N64 games, I remember the SmackDown games in the early years of the PS2 were good.

Probably the best 2d gaming pad all around. Best dpad around for sure. Just wish it had a bit more bulk, feels like you're holding a coaster lol.

Personally don't care for pads when it comes to fighters, but the Saturn pad is easily a top 3. Only competition being straight up fightpads. Hori and Razer have managed to 1up the Saturn pad in everything but the dpad.
