The more significant tidbits on the importance of gaming at Microsoft moving forward:

I have heard from three different sources stating that Microsoft is pushing forward with new hardware but that the release timeline is still several years away.

The company is looking to hire a specialist with GDDR6 expertise and they are also exploring how to deeply integrate game streaming into their next console.

As for the timeline for the next console release, I’ve heard that within three years is a realistic possibility; the company is not currently in a rush to replace the Xbox One X as it has a significant horsepower advantage when compared to the current offering from Sony. And as you would expect, the console will be backward and forwards compatible, much like the Xbox One X; Paul is also hearing that Microsoft is building another iteration of the Xbox as well.

Even though Microsoft is pushing more towards the enterprise with its Windows and Office services, Xbox is one of the few brands inside of Microsoft that has managed to create a huge consumer-following and has a large upside ahead of it as gaming, and eSports, continue to grow. The company has also recently announced that it is expanding its E3 presence that further shows that Microsoft is not shying away from gaming.

While Nintendo has carved out a sizeable chunk of the casual gaming market with its Switch, the Xbox only has one primary competitor; Sony. Even though the PlayStation has the lead for this generation, Microsoft is making significant investments in hardware/content to close the gap with Sony and has the financial backing to go all-in on gaming to win the next generation

It'll be interesting to see how 2020-2021 plays out with the next Xbox and PS5.

My bet is the next Xbox will launch 4 years after the Xbox One X, meaning Fall 2021, about 3.5 years away. Enough time to make a similar 4-5x leap in hardware power, but next time with a massively better CPU, likely ZEN 3 and NextGen GPU, and 24-32 GB GDDR6.

Although I wouldn't rule out a Fall 2020 launch either, and that would still be another 2.5 years from now, using ZEN 2+ and NAVI GPU, and 18-24 GB GDDR6.

Wonder if they are going to do like they did for Xbox 360, take a loss initially to boost hardware performance but keeping it affordable and help try pushing hardware by making more powerful system. Could help, but they also need to invest in games. Also, I hear their marketing abroad is really lacking, they should focus on that if possible. Good news if true, shows they are not resigning their spot in the console market, and are more focused than they were than when they rolled out the XB1.

The waiting begins. Instead of X1X, we could have been getting excellent games. I think the problem isn't money, it's the people making the decisions on what games to make.

Lol keep waiting for games and shelling out cash for new hardware even though it plays the same games. Maybe they can use that money to release some video games for their console. Xboxs lineup is drier than the sahara desert. Even xbox execs are playing god of war instead LOL

Sounds great to me. Really looking forward to seeing what they do. I’ve been playing a ton of excellent games on the Xbox One regardless of their “exclusivity” status from both third parties and first parties. My experience with the Xbox One has been very positive so they’ve been doing a pretty good job so far for my preferences.

I mean, the XBox Two could be amazing. It's not like this is even anything new. After all, they outsourced Gears of War and Halo by 2010 when the 360 was a thing. So, here we are in the same song and dance. The XBox One is over with and they are slowly building the next trojan horse back in the lab.

At this point, Lems have absolutely nothing to be upset about. It's all been done before. They signed up for this. They can just smile and tell us how happy they are with new levels of mediocrity as a console generation twilights again.

My thoughts exactly. Would hope to see some near-bleeding edge hardware in 2020 or 2021 from Microsoft that can more than just hold its own against whatever PS5 is.

Xbox 360 was more impressive hardware in 2005 relative to Xbox One X in 2017,

In 2005, ultra high-end PCs were hard-pressed to match Xbox 360. They could, but just barely.

While things changed dramatically for PC hardware by late 2006 (Nvidia's G80 GPU in the 8800 GTX was unbeatable) the Xbox 360 was very impressive for a console in late 2005 and early 2006, especially given the fact it was designed during the 2002-2003 time frame, and the specs leaked in April 2004.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2004/04/27/xbox-2-details-revealed

27 APR 2004

XBOX 2 DETAILS REVEALED

Chinese development sources leak Microsoft blueprint.

Chinese website GZeasy revealed an alleged blueprint of Xbox 2, labeled Xenon System Block Diagram, earlier today. The diagram is believed to be the basic concept for the next Xbox, which is either codenamed Xenon or will, in fact, be called Xenon. Though some aspects of Xenon may change slightly over the next year, the diagram is believed to be a close representation of Xbox 2.

Michael Dougherty, head of Xbox Advanced Technology Group, has his name attached to the document, though that doesn't make it any more legitimate. However, the diagram was confirmed as the real deal by a developer close to Microsoft. "We were very surprised to see that leaked," a source, who wished to remain anonymous, told us this morning. "I'm sure Microsoft is freaking out because this is the same stuff [developers] have now."

Other sources have claimed that the document is not real and claim it is a fake. The main point of contention is that the document doesn't state what type of RAM will be used, something that's quite important for development considerations. A Microsoft representative stated, "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation" -- but Microsoft's legal department requested that IGN does not reprint the schematic on its websites. While most signs suggest that the document is authentic and of high importance, note that it is also possible the leaked blueprint is an older document never meant for the public eye and that the current architecture of Xbox 2 is quite different.

What does the fancy diagram that Microsoft doesn't want you to see mean? Though it doesn't offer cold hard facts as to what "Xenon" will be capable of in terms of full processing power, one thing is clear -- this baby will be quite powerful. Xenon is divided into essentially two sections. The section on the left of the machine, the South Bridge, is standard stuff. That's where your DVD, Ethernet port, and potential hard disk go. Note that the hard disk is not confirmed, even in this diagram, but if it is to be used, expect 20-80 GBs capacity.

The more interesting parts of the diagram are on the right. Think of the North Bridge as your highway of importance and everything attached to it -- graphics, sound, AI -- are all of the information needed to run a game. All of that needs to get pulled onto the highway and brought to the South Bridge. There are wide open lanes to the North Bridge from every area, incredibly wide, with 10.8-33.2 GBs per second bandwidth able to be transferred along the pipeline. That is unbelievably fast.

Of course, a quick pipeline means nothing if there isn't processing power behind it all. Taking a bike onto an empty freeway still isn't going to get you anywhere quickly. The first and most important item to note is the upper box on the diagram. There are three 3.5+GHz CPU chips. Each of these will likely be used to handle different aspects of Xenon processing. Each also has its own separate cache and a global cache. All of this means that while Xenon will likely use grid processing or some form of collaborative "cell" processing (IBM does something similar with "Butterfly" very well), as opposed to the more common dual-processing. Each CPU can then work independently to govern different game needs, but because of the shared cache, and because each is a Virtual Processing Unit, programmers will see it as, essentially, one unit. They won't have to meticulously program specific functions to each processor, but instead can rely on Xenon to choose where to distribute everything. None of that Sega Saturn insanity here.

Below the North Bridge is the all-important graphics chip. The 500MHz clocked core chip has 10 Megs of dedicated EDRAM, which will likely be used for more specific special effects. While that doesn't sound like much, Microsoft's current console has no graphics-dedicated RAM. Those 10MBs will keep a majority of the 256 MBs of main RAM free for other applications. This chip, presumably still of ATI make and specially created for Xenon, looks to be beyond the best graphics available on PC now or in the foreseeable future, but should be comparable to those high-end cards by the time Xenon is release in 2005 (unless it's delayed).

To the right of the North Bridge is the Main Memory, which at 256MB may seem small compared to your personal computer, but remember that Xbox only has 64MBs and does not have any memory specifically dedicated to graphics or special effects. All of that memory can be pumped across the system bus at 22.4 GBs per second. More bandwidth across the board means less choke points, which translates to higher performance.

If this diagram is real, reasonably up-to-date, and if this is the blueprint for Xbox 2, then gamers are in for a whale of a machine, one far more powerful than any current generation console.

These really were the early specifications for Xbox 360, probably as of late 2003 / early 2004.

The final hardware differed in just two ways, the CPU ran at 3.2 GHz, instead of "3.5+ GHz" and the unified RAM went from "256+ MB" to 512 MB.

GOW 2018 took five years to develop and release. If XBOX just started on new IP's last year, or even the year before, we're some time away from seeing these releases. It takes time because the xbox one was launched by idiots and phil has to clean up their mess.

I think Microsoft will use Nintendo's apporach with the Switch next generation. Release a first party title every 3 to 5 months after launch. Although, we might not have to wait until next generation since the next Xbox will be backwards compatible with Xbox One.

Reason why Microsoft is without "games" is because Microsoft started cutting first party development during the second half of the Xbox 360 generation. They were comfortabe depending on 3rd party exclusive support with the Xbox 360. They have been playing catch up ever since but they are still hestiant on building new first party studios.

They always make significant investments in gaming. That's why they lost almost 7 billion on the OG Xbox. LOL. They overspend with no reward every gen, and I can't see how this will be different. In the meantime, this probably means investing in an Xbox One X is waste of time since they're gearing up for next gen.

LOL, brutal.

Par for the course though with how Microsoft treats the Xbox deadenders.

They dumped the first Xbox marketplace failure after only four years.

They dumped most of their first party developers mid gen with the RRoD plagued Xbox 360 because they thought they could turn the Xbox into some Wii type megahit by bolting a Sony EyeToy clone onto the system and start focusing on casual shovelware.

And now after four years of failure with the Xbox One Microsoft is once again giving the suckers who bought their system the finger.

It all sounds good to me as long as Phil does not do that we don't have UC so let me go buy Tomb Raider shit. We showed you Phantom Dust but we don't know what to do with it. Could not see Scale Bound through for whatever creative differences reasons. We don't know what Fable game to make. Everything should be a GAAS game or maybe not. We don't know what to do with Crack Down. MS is at its best when it does it stuff. So stop being cheap and see through projects to completion. Invest on the next Halo or go revive Itagaki or something. Go big when you have something like Sea of Thief. None of that trying to chase cheap money crap.

Exactly! If Microsoft can't dominate something, they'll drop it in a heartbeat. That's their only singular goal in gaming. Not making good products, not establishing studios and the brand in more markets than the US, just muscling money to get a hold in the market. Gaming LOSES them money, and they keep coming back each time shoveling in cash hoping this is the time they can take home all the marbles.

The Xbox fandom is the same mentality. They don't care if MS leaves 'em holding the bag when things don't go their way. They just want them to try to outspend Sony to be on top... this hasn't happened for 3 gens now. And the only thing they have to look forward to if Microsoft does take over is DRM-enabled gaming. The pattern continues.

Spot on. MS doesn’t give a damn about games or furthering the artform, they only want to dominate. They see it like they see their other side ventures.

Thats why I think they are bad for the industry. I valued their competition when they were competitive last gen but this side of them that wants to dominate is bad. The sad thing is that they only want to dominate so that can put minimal effort and get maximum profit, and that means DRM and GAAS model for them.

I’m positive that most lems are either casuals or hardcore corporate cheerleaders because it’s clear they don’t care about games at this point as they continue to blindly support MS and their bullshit this gen. I’ve never seen the kind of mediocre effort from a major console provider like I’m seeing from MS right now.

Its okay for Nintendo and Sony to dominate (preferably Sony so we can get decent hardware) since they’ve shown from their history that they care about delivering high quality content even when they are absolutely dominating. The only time MS thought they were leading they decided to go DRM crazy, and tried to turn gaming into some cash cow for their other interests.

Did I just read "MS doesn’t give a damn about games or furthering the artform, they only want to dominate." LOL. Soon we will read that Company X cares about gaming. LOL. Fanboys are too hilarious.

@BenjaminBanklin: well said. It’s the continuous lem delusion cycle that gets me. I don’t understand how a group of cheerleaders can continuously defend a company that very clearly does not give a shit. Games as a service LOL.

Listen, I'm a classic gamer. I don't buy digital anything - I prefer hard copies, and I'm not even a collector. Being online to play my games is one of my biggest pet peeves. With that said, if Microsoft creates a good video game streaming service, ala Netflix (not OnLive), then they could revolutionize things. But it would have to be mainstream and a great deal from a customer out-of-pocket money perspective. Netflix is good because it's cheap and offers decent content. OnLive's model was not like Netflix.

Color me interested.

Oh, the Reduc is backing her fellow Sony fanny. Too bad the reality was contrary to your claim.

It's not that "Sony gives us all wuvs and cuddles", like the X-fandom does with Aaron Greenberg on Twitter. It's that Sony's business model respects traditional elements in the core gaming market. Great single-player games, offline game ownership, great titles from the east and the west. Things MS eventually turned up their nose at and got owned this gen. Sony isn't perfect, but they excel in the things that matter, like games... for game consoles. And that's what gives the edge to Sony and Nintendo over MS.

MS is currently retreating to the past, and trying to beta test their fandom with expensive consoles. And upselling their customers with shit that has nothing to do with games. Stop trying to make 4K UHD happen.
