Now it's like, wtf these are the same games we've played over and over again. Remember when each gen actually felt like it was different from the last? What happened? rektmuhface remembers.

Companies listen to consumers. If people are buying and continue to buy games from a franchise/genre, publishers are going to keep creating them.

Gaming standards keep raising as the budgets do, developers that can't compete but want that spot on the market end up going under. Eventually publishers, IPs, the talented studios that make those classic games wither away. I think in many ways it was awesome the amount of competition that existed last gen. However, the industry burnt itself out in many ways. Think of it like a drug high, like someone frying on ecstasy or mushrooms or LSD or whatever, great rush of endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, whatever, that good stuff, have a great short time with it, then there's a hangover due to the over-production of neurotransmitters, receptors think they want more but the body is depleted, and the body goes into a lethargy... the gaming industry is in a lull. It's got to rest up before it can feel normal again, and it could take a while.

Some people will say "indies will save us"... not that I think that, not in some pretentious sense like they remember what's important about games and such. No, they'll save us because they make budget games, there'll be tons, but hopefully the gems rise above the shit, they'll slowly gain money, prominence, they'll reach a state where people come forward to fund production and publishing, then we're back to where we started, then it's another arms race between publishers and IPs. History will repeat itself.

Yeah, we're definitely headed for a crash it feels like.

Development feels slower than ever in some ways, frequent delays and buggy as **** releases.

I dunno, this gen has ways to seperate it from previous gens. Here are some notable trends,

  • Crowdfunded games
  • Open World Freeroam games (Last gen, the trending genre was the whac-a-mole style shooter)
  • Console MMORPGs
  • Digitalization of content
  • Connecting gaming to social media

Gaming is great if you know where to look. If you are still waiting for something that is worth every penny, from big publishers (except very few of them) then you are doing it wrong. Look for mid-tier devs. "AAA" mostly is a buzz word these days.

Flashy trailers/cheap marketing tactics but nothing more, just a shallow experience (and add a lot of DLC and microtransaction whoring on top of it, in SP games). What's the point when you are getting better stuff for cheaper price and from companies that don't treat you like criminals?

The only thing that they lack is front page advertisement. If you want gaming to improve then support devs who deserve your money. I love how everyone complains about same stuff, yet COD is best selling game every year.

Just like how people complain that movies are CGI-fests only interested in making money, the problem lies in where you decide to look for your entertainment. There have been plenty of fine games that arrived this gen. Just because you can't see them, doesn't mean they're not there.

PS 4 is slowly destroy gaming. Can't even count all the rehashes that came out this gen instead of saints row 5 we got a port of iv and its expansion

Instead of gtavi we got a port of last gens gtav even after rockstar said it wasn't happening

Then there's other ports instead of new games in the borderlands series we got ports of its prequels and, 2 as.well as a metro port

Gaming today is more diverse and higher quality than ever before. Our standards are much higher today as well. It takes far more to impress me than when I was 10 years old and playing on my Playstation.

If you are finding it difficult to enjoy games then you're not looking in the right places. On the PC I can find anything I want and at minimum one quality title to fit every niche. Paired with my Xbox One and PS4 there are very few high quality games I miss out on.

The big games are playing it safe because their budgets do not allow for innovation or flexbility. They have to invest into what will make them back money or risk going under if a single game underperforms. It was a lot easier for developers when their studios were less than 50 people large. A setback in sales wouldn't necessarily mean the death of a company (if the company was midly successful prior to the flop). Today a big setback in sales could mean losing 1/3rd of your staff which destroys your chances of making the deadlines.

This is why PC gaming is still the king. The small dev who can take the risks is still on the PC. The PC does get a lot of garbage, but this volume allows for more high quality titles to be made. Pure volume. Even if 90% of games are forgettable, if there are 1000 games made on the PC for every 100 console games, that would be 100 good PC games to only 10 on the console. Volume has its advantages. Fanboys only see the 900 bad games though. The numbers work both ways.

It still is great fun for me. If something isn't great to you anymore and you're unhappy about it why not become a proactive member of changing it instead of crying about it? Or just move on. Human beings do change throughout life and maybe this isn't for you anymore.

Seems the same as ever to me. I remember the old gaming days when consoles had either side-scrollers and more side-scrollers or top-down games and more top-down games. On the PC side? Flight sims and more flight sims or adventure games and more adventure games (both text-based and graphical ones). He He. I actually liked the old flight sim days though.

This gen is simply starting off VERY slowly. There are a number of great titles available if you're willing to take your fanboy goggles off for a second.

Modern Gaming Culture sucks.

Hey let's bitch and whine about every thing "Wha wha wha wha wha this game stole my breakfast 0/10"
