*UPDATE* - Bethesda put incorrect information out and has since corrected the error. Please see this link with their comments.

https://twitter.com/BethesdaSupport/status/1626691198185361426?t=1tLrcDGIp8JTA3penMuOVw&s=19section

News broke today that Redfall will not have a physical disc for either Xbox or PC. Both “physical” copies will contain a code inside, nothing more. Also if you hadn’t heard, Redfall is online only, including single player. You can’t play Redfall in any way without an internet connection.

I hope everyone is ready for more of this, but I believe MS will lead the charge. Goodbye physical copies.

I prefer digital. Having more stuff lying around sounds awful.

I applaud the company. No need for us to create more waste over something we'll use for a few hours and discard to a shelf.

I’m not surprised, I’d expect MS to push for all digital since they want GamePass to be king anyways.

The less physical copies being made/sold, the better. just 100% useless plastic and garbage being made and shipped around the world unnecessarily

sucks for those with poor internet access, but one would think that is becoming less and less common even in developing countries

Can’t say this is surprising as the game needs a persistent online connection to even play it. This isn’t the first game to have just a box with a download code. The most egregious of these is when they do it with Collector’s Editions. Recently God of War: Ragnarok Collector’s Edition didn’t even have a physical version of the game included. 🤦‍♂️

k. Last time I bought a physical PC game was probably Guild Wars or something. I still get physical console games though so I can loan them out to friends and siblings.

@Archangel3371: I’d say this is worse. That was only the collector’s edition. This is the game as a whole for both Xbox and PC.

@nnoyinghusband: Disagree. Redfall is an online game only anyway. God of War: Ragnarok is a single player game that can be played offline. It’s also a Collector’s Edition for well, collectors. They even give you a fancy steelbook case for a disc but no disc. WTF? 😅

Bethesda already debunked this.

"2/4 The physical retail version of the Redfall Xbox standard edition does come with a Blu-Ray disc. The Bite Back Upgrade can be purchased separately. Within the Bite Back Upgrade, you will find a code that grants you the Bite Back Upgrade "

Nintendo physical copies are actually worth something in future. Digital dies when your console dies.

Also Nintendo and Sony have a non-existant refund policy, which as far as I'm aware is actually illegal in the EU but I don't see anyone stopping them.

So yeah, physical for consoles all the way. I'll never stop buying physical and the day that consoles go all digital is the day I stop playing on consoles if the situation remains as it is now.

As for Redfall, I'm not really interested in the game

Duuuude, I saw these mini cases for Switch

Can you show me those PS1 retro cases? For example I'd love to see a PS1 case for Metal Gear Solid 5, a PS4 game, hehe

When you subscribe to Gamepass, you effectively abandon physical copies anyway. It is fine. I don't have room for all those plastic cases and discs. Only when I see a really good offer do I buy physical games. This usually onoy happens on Black Friday..

I actually found out by accident about a year ago, but Amazon still sells physical copies of some games.

Most newer games only include a download code, but there's quite a few that still include install discs.

I was shocked, but I bought Fable 3 I believe and it was on a disc

To heck with all the pro digital people.

My brother just returned his copy of Tales of Symphonia after hearing how garbage the “remaster” was and wish he kept his old physical copy of the GameCube and PS3 versions that I thankfully still have.

Imagine if Bandai Namco did what Rockstar and Sega did with the GTA trilogy and Sonic Origins and remove listings of superior older games…

There’s a reason why nostalgia and remakes are being made everywhere because you really can’t appreciate something until it’s gone.

If there ever comes a day where this digital stuff goes sideways with companies removing things and forcing you all to play garbage on always online devices, and you have a game from your past that you really want to play again, I’ll be there and I’ll charge you all $200/hour just to play it :)

You speak as if we can't currently play EVERY game that was made via digital download without the concern of finding the disc or cartridge that may or may not be on sale or available. Stop parading an alternate reality in which the only archive of games is via the original physical medium.

It's an online game. There is no reason to put version 1.0 on a disc.

Seriously why are we still using physical media?

Yes I know there are some positives, but not enough. Obviously we should live in a world with choices and while I don't actively wish for physical media to go away, I don't think it's a negative to be in a digital-only format.

Last time I bought physical media was for PS4 and I couldn't even play the games without downloading monstrous updates, anyway. "Oh sweet I'll play Horizon Zero Dawn/God of War/Infamous as soon as this installs and then I ca---oh, nevermind, 40GB update needed. Online authentication needed. Etc. etc.

Physical is still superior to digital. Can lend, borrow, sell, and when done properly, like Nintendo games, the game is on the disc and therefore you don’t need to download. and for collectors, can keep their value sometimes exceeding their value in some cases. Oh, and you have control over ownership unlike digital where technically if the company goes out of business, then what do you do?

I'd refer you to Pedros post above. Barring some doomsday scenario, this viewpoint just isn't realistic man.

Digital is overwhelmingly superior in both preservation and accessibility.

Not arguing preference, rest of your post is fine, there are real benefits to having a physical copy for some.

But unless you're riding out a nuclear winter or some shit in a bunker full of games, nah lol.

Ownership is transferred to another entity or storefront just like with movies and music maintaining your ownership.
