Poll Realistically, do you think next gen AAA games can achieve stable 4K/60fps on next gen consoles? (118 votes)

Yes 38%
No 62%

I'm a skeptic on this. 4k/60 fps would be really demanding. Consoles have usually nort been ahead of the curve like that. Do you think it'll happen, SW?

I've seen a lot of console games stuck at 30 fps ... even at 1080p. I dont think 4k / 60 will be the standard anytime soon.

I don't think 60fps will ever be what devs will aim for unless the manufacturers require them to. Most gamers (casuals of course) value graphics rather than fps.

Once they prioritize performance I don't see why not.

Most won't be 60 FPS and many won't even be 4K.

Sure why not? Many AAA games this gen hit 60fps on weak Jaguar cores. If next gen consoles have 8c16t or a flat 8c zen2 uArc 60fps will be relatively easy. Of course many games will be 30fps and if 60 isn't needed then that's fine. Excellent AI, next gen physics and a believable world are perhaps more important.

Single player games 30, multiplayer 60. That would be a good norm.

I never expected to see native 4K on major games this generation but the Xbox One X proved me wrong there. I'm optimistic developers can pull it off.

Well of course it will doable, but it won't be the standard. You can definitely expect it from Forza and possibly even the next Halo game.

X1X manages 4k 60 fps in some games already, so keeping the details at medium for next gen consoles should allow for 4k 60fps on most games. Upscaled 4k 60 fps is more realistic maybe.

No.

Scatteh, m3dude, m3boarder, Giovela, Carlos, blackhairedhero, etc are going to have to deal with a distant 2nd/3rd place again.

Deal with it.

No. They don’t even achieve 60fps on 1080p as a standard now.

Not at 4K, no.

They could have stable 60 with variable resolution.

But we all know they will choose 30fps as the target.

It's certainly doable. It won't happen, but the hardware will be capable. Devs/pubs would have to reduce graphical fidelity, and that just doesn't seem to be a priority in order to put out stable performance in games.

Considering next gen consoles are most likely about xbox one x *2 ~12tflops, so with the xbox one x settings it would make for 60fps, but that's doubly going to happen as the devs are just going to push for higher visual fidelity

4K in the majority of games is likely. 4K/60? very small numbers of 4K/60 titles. It's going to be a 4K/30 1080p/60 generation.

@Zero_epyon: you won't see many if any 1080p games next gen. 1440 is likely the bottom resolution. Didn't see many 720p games this gen and didn't see many 480p games last gen. 1080p going the way of the dodo.

With games that push the visual bar higher? No

Consoles are marketed towards consumers playing on Televisions. The standard resolution on those TV's is 1080p or 4K. Rendering games at 1440p will do almost nothing for 1080p players. Might as well save some of that for performance or visual quality.

Even the base Xbox One can do 1080p/60 in Forza and I'm sure others and that's a fairly weak system compared to the competition. What games are we talking here? Racing and sports games should be easily ran at 4k/60. If a game can't run it native, I'd prefer check board 4k/60 over native 4k/30. There's barely a difference visually and a huge difference in performance, which actually makes the game look better also. So, yes, for sure they can.

Yeah don't count on that. It took forever for people to finally get 1080p TVs. They will remain the majority going into next gen.

@joshrmeyer: my thoughts exactly. There plenty of AAA games that do 60fps now, some even at 4k. People forget how weak the Jaguar core is, going from that to a possible 16 thread zen even st 3.5ghz will be massive. And 10-12tflop gpu should allow for next gen visuals too.

That's not true.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/searchpage.jsp?id=pcat17071&st=1080p+tv

There are people with 720p (also there are 720p TVs on the market still) TVs right now. Of course there will be 1080p TVs. Especially when a 1080p TV is so cheap compared to the 4K ones.

The question is will they even be able to run games at 1440p on a stable 60fps for next gen?

Delusional fanboys would say yes.

TBF, it depends on the engine and the quality. But mostly, no, unless you're willing to spend the premium on it.

Provided that the CPU is not going to be a major bottleneck like this gen, I think them targeting 4k/60fps with a dynamic resolution is the way to go. The most important thing is that they maintain the 60fps performance target.

Current gen consoles can do 4k 60fps stable. The game just won't look amazing. In the same way, of course next gen can do 4k 60fps. It won't though because devs can make a much better looking game at 4k 30fps.

At most I can see it being optional on the higher end models of next gen consoles.

Easily, they already ahve in most cases...

So this is just an issue of the broad based nature of the use of the system which could also easily be forthcoming.

Some of the responses in this thread are acting as if there are no games currently on consoles that are not 4k at 60fps. 4k at 60 FPS will factually be achievable, and like others said would they actually use the systems for that goal would be dependent on the developer.

Depends on the hardware. To pull 4k @60 requires brute force hardware. 2 factors come into point too, the game engine & what settings the game is pulling 4k@60. Proab pairing a heavily clocked i3 /ryzen with a 1660ti/590 is posb but for sure the price factor is definetly to be taken in account for

PS5: 8K/120FPS

Sony has already shown Gran Turismo as proof.

Xbox Whatever: 4K/30FPS. Forza will get 4K/60FPS.

Nintendo: 240i-900p/10-30FPS.
