Rare We should have scrapped Kameo

Xbox 360 launch game Kameo: Elements of Power should not have been released, developer Rare has admitted.

Speaking in an interview with Edge, creative director George Andreas said, "I was on that project from start to finish, so it's quite painful to talk about it in some ways.

"It started as a GameCube project, and it was actually one of the games we demoed at E3 along with the hardware. And then it jumped from GameCube on to Xbox. We changed direction slightly because of the new audience we were trying to aim at.

"We called Kameo an elf, but really she was a fairy," he continued. "We tried to disguise that a few times, but it didn't really work out. It was a game with a fairy for an audience that likes shooting and killing things.

"In hindsight it probably would have been best to scrap everything and start again."

Andreas also revealed that Rare still receives hate mail from Nintendo gamers to this day. The developer was once owned by Nintendo, for whom it made GoldenEye 007, Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark and Donkey Kong 64, but was bought out by Microsoft in 2002.

"[The Microsoft deal] happened relatively quickly. It was generally supported company-wide as well. No one was that unhappy that we'd gone with Microsoft."

Design head Gregg Mayles added, "We got [angry] letters every step of the way. Once they got email, it was like opening the floodgates."

"We still get them now," said studio head Mark Betteridge.

Rare's next title is Kinect Sports for Xbox 360, out on 10th November."

They were losing members way before MS ever gained control of them.

They would be of the same quality now if they were still with Nintendo. You just can't easily replace members of the once God-Like Rareware that easily.

what a nutty thing to say kameo was a great game.

the first time i saw what it looked like and rode through the hundreds of onscreen orcs i was all wow next gen is going to rock if this is a launch title.

Their biggest problem here, is assuming that the entire Xbox fanbase is actually interested in just shooting and killing things. I thought Kameo was a breath of fresh air on the 360, as was Nuts & Bolts, and helped bring a variety to the console that it sorely lacks most of the time.

Rare is dead. They dropped the Kameo (and I hear Conker) sequel for Kinect projects. They have been good after the move from Nintendo (no matter what Nintendo fanboys will tell you)... but they are dead now.

It has expanded since then though.

I thought Kameo was okay. I also thought she was Fairy when i played it and didn't mind. I honesty didn't know she was "elf."

Yeah I was trying to remember who made it...

Anyway, I don't know what's worse. The Nintendo fandom mail or how they had to hide the fact she was a fairy to the xbox crowd... it's hilariously ridiculous and sad at the same time--ambivalence kicking in. It really puts into perspective the kind of audience developers think they generally have on their hands.

Did their games really sell that bad on 360? I remember hearing that the numbers weren't bad at all--might be wrong.

One of the best new IPs this gen and they are saying they should not have made it. Why do people out think themselves?
