The hostage wasn't an object, it was an objective

Terrorists go to take hostage, one says "jeez guys, she's a human being with feelings not a piece of meat".

Police find out the hostage at the stand-off is a woman; "jeez, it'd be sexist of us to rescue her without getting to know her first".

It's a shame that this women does so little to help herself. She can only scream, cry, and go with whatever person is closest to her.

Im a man and I would do the same thing in this situation.Im not a solider and I dont know how to use a weapon so yea I would go with the nice officers and be scared for my life.

Yup, the last sentence hits home. You're in a hostage situation. You are not Rambo. Chances are, you're an average Joe who would best listen to the people with firepower. In fact, Tom's almost blaming the victim for not doing anything to help herself: "She should have ran away, or fought back or something". Seems his PC article kind of backfired with him being insensitive. But hey, it's another Tom article, so in reality, no one should care.

Mcshea confirmed for never being a hostage.

I was more outraged at how the police handle a hostage in the game. I didn't know it was typical counter-terrorist behavior to use hostages as human shields while you have a big shoot out with terrorists, and then proceed to throw said hostage out of a two story shattered, bedroom window. I don't understand why they felt the need to drag the hostage along as they went hunting for terrorists. Seemed pretty daft.

Swat 4 didn't have that shit. If you found a hostage, you yelled at the motherfucker to drop to the floor, put their hands up, then proceed to cuff them. If they didn't comply, I'd bear mace their asses!

Sometimes if you crack a rotten egg, all it does is make a bigger stink, but I think they do need to put him back in line and remind him that his job is to report about video games. If he wants to be a moral guardian then he should start working for one of the alphabet soup of non-profit groups that are out there. We do not come to Gamespot because we want a moral guardian to feel outraged on our behalf for things that we are completely indifferent towards.

Avatar image for Bruin1986

This article, and its supposed indignation, is literally too absurd for me to divert any true intellectual effort towards.

It's a hostage.

There are two options: man or woman

Fact: Women are smaller, weaker, and more easily controlled then men. It's why almost every society in human history has been male dominated or "patriarchical". If it was a male hostage...I guess the SWAT team would be fighting for his adoration and thanks?

Women in danger elicit a greater degree of protectionism and anger than men do. Why? Because of, like everything else, human biology. A single male can impregnate dozens of women. A woman cannot become "more" pregnant with multiple men. A population losing a large percentage of its women is far more damaging than it losing a large percentage of its men because it will take far longer to recover to its original strength. Which is why cultures instinctively protect women...it's basic survival.

It's gotten to the point where people literally LOOK for things to get offended about. I simply don't understand anymore. There are egregious atrocities and injustices around the world that actually warrant people writing about them and trying to fight against. Like for example, oh, I don't know, ISIS executing over 1500 people in Iraq.

This videogame is not one of them. By any measurement. Period.

Normally I find Tom provides a different angle or a smarter look at the game industry but I have to take exception with this vapid, pathetic article. He wants the developers to impart some human qualities on a hostage who has been traumatized by her captives. Perhaps she should just steal a gun from one of the SWAT members and mow the terrorists down without body armor or proper training. Players on the police side could follow her around and not shoot anything for the entire match.

Ubisoft would be happy though, free advertising and all that.

Between this and the other complaints regarding AC: Unity (for not having playable females in co-op), Ubisoft should take the mature, sensible high road on Twitter and say, "Bite Me"

They've had plenty of female protagonists already (AC already had one as a main character). The media is attacking the one developer who is perhaps closer to the forefront than lots of other AAA developers who have been making games for decades and still haven't bothered or tried to incorporate a major female character.

I understand that gender discrimination is a valid topic and area of concern sometimes. But seeing Ubisoft get hammered on two games at E3 makes it look more like a slightly desperate trigger-finger on the part of certain media, to find some easy target to help bring this explosive gender topic back to the surface again. Ubisoft happened to be spotted in the crosshairs this time. Who is going to be the next poor victim?

The Disturbing Representation of Women in the Rainbow Six: Siege E3 Demo

"But it's important to note that Ubisoft didn't show any other hostages in their debut demonstration. It was their decision to have a woman presented as an object, something to be fought over--to be won--so that's the message that was hammered home."

"And don't think for a second that this woman was any more than an object. The match that was being showcased in Siege was a twist on capture the flag in which the reward in question was replaced with a living, breathing woman"

"It's a shame that this women does so little to help herself. She can only scream, cry, and go with whatever person is closest to her. It's a sad situation in which she isn't humanized at all, but is just a mindless trophy to be taken by whoever is the most powerful."

The fact Rainbow 6 went from diverse, Europe characters to Americans saving the universe is far more worthy of complaints.

But alas, America's arrogance is never ending. It's a non issue if the rest of the world gets blocked out, look at Saving Private Ryan and the absolute absence of anyone not American. Same thing here, Rainbow 6 re-written to make Americans the hero.

That is the stupidest thing I have read in a long time. So Das Boot is an arrogant film because its only about the members of a German submarine? Its my entire country's fault that Steven Spielberg told a story about an American captain and his squad on a mission to send home an American soldier? My country has many problems and faults, and you're exhibiting one of them. Guess it isn't just us.

Saving Private Ryan was undoubtedly a "America, and then everyone else". Don't take my word for it friend... people (i.e. actual people on the beach) crowed about this long, long before I made this post. . **** man, even the ships that landed replaced British with American.

Heck, even American people who did fight on the beach (and was in the longest day a much superior film) called it shit

Same with War Of Worlds. A British book, set in Britain. Replaced with American and Americans.

It is arrogance. Regardless of his quality as a filmmaker (and he is a great filmmaker) he perpetuates the concept of "America is the most important country in the world".

Video games are also absolutely guilty of this as video games pretty much attempt to rip off movies in every aspect, Spielberg can also be directly attributed to this.

It's really a none argument, since it's a fact.

^ You do understand that what was shown was a muitplayer demonstration and that you're judging the game solely on the races of those playing in the trailer right? I understand what you're trying to say here ,but you should wait until the single player campaign is shown first..unless you have a fact sheet from ubisoft saying the entire team in the campaign are Americans.
