The game that comes to mind when I think about this topic is Katamari Damacy. I remember this game back in the PS2 days, but never played it. I got the remastered version on Switch not long ago, and I really like it. The core gameplay is collecting stuff which has a snowball effect and the goal is to have the biggest "ball" before the time is up. You do this to some of the best music I've heard in a video game lol. The game is very quirky, with very quirky characters and story. I really enjoy this one, and this is my pick! How about you, SW? What quirky, but fun games would you recommend?

@xantufrog: I bought it on switch... Yeah better just leave the game in nostalgia. The "sequel", We love Katamari on PS2 has much better control, music and level designs. The 360 release was really fun as well.

@xantufrog: you can usually find it for $10 and at least on Switch you can play it as a portable.

Anyhow mine is Metropolismania 2 on the PS2. Its a city building game with japanese flavor where you need to complete task to upgrade your towns. I really loved this game its quite addicting building your city, completing task by townspeople and you can roam the city you build as the town planner getting feedback from townfolks. In retrospect its probably just another city building game but idk the asian charm it has makes it quite quirky for me. More reason for sony to do damn PS2 BC, put this game on the PSN store please.

Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido is good stuff. I agree with Katamari Damacy also, it's very unique.

Stick it to The Man -- really weird, but fun.

Revenge Of the Shinobi comes to mind.

Fight Spiderman, Godzilla, The Terminator and Batman in the same game. It jumps from feudal Japan to fighting brains and cyborgs in Tron land.

It also helps that the game is really fucking awesome. Though hard as nails.

Katamari is a good one here, the game is the definition of a quirky game.

Theme Hospital and Two Point Hospital are also pretty quirky games with all the crazy sicknesses you have to cure. Bit too much time wasting in hospital setup in Two Point as you progress far in the game which can make it tedious, but still fun mostly. Two Point really needs a way to save a room blueprint so you can use it throughout the proceeding levels and not just in the current level you are in.

Yeah maybe Psychonauts is another one. I'm looking forward to the sequel to see if they can still make it funny.

Lastly, Saints Row 2, 3 and 4.

Catherine is a great choice. I played the remake and it was awesome. Never played the original.

I like the Dreamcast a lot for these kinds of games.

Ooga Booga was a goofy arena shooter/brawler. One of the modes, Boar Polo was like an early proof of concept for Rocket Leage, except you're riding boars.

Chu Chu Rocket. Direct mice into rockets before the cats eat them.

Super Magnetic Neo. Like Crash Bandicoot, but you are magnenetic. Lots of jumping puzzles revolve around reversing your polarity.

Fighting Vipers. Like Virtua Fighter, but louder.

Super Monkey Ball. Newer games don't quite nail it, but the first two are awesome.

I always thought Katamari might not feel right on a asymmetrical analog stick (Not PS controller). I think it might not feel like "pushing" the ball. But I've never played it on other than PS.

Far Cry 2 is quirky and cumbersome:

- You pick up an enemy weapon and it will jam every 5 bullets and eventually explode

- Even your own weapons will get dirty, eventually unusable: jam and explode. Damn African sand!

- Cars break down way too fast, especially with enemy laser aim

- Enemy laser aim. What? I mentioned this already? It's frikkin' rediculous

- The game gives you malaria. Whenever you get a malaria strike it never comes at the right time

But all in all the game is just fun. It nails the setting, the music. The technology is just great, and still looks impressive to this day. The weapons are fun and all fill a certain role (RPG, Sniper, Shotgun, Crossbow,...)

Stealth is out of the window because of how bad the AI is designed (realistic?) but that just means shootouts are all the more fun.

The game doesn't have any hand holding. It leaves you free to do what you want, every mission is designed with multiple points of attack. Enemies aren't tagged as in later Far Cry, there is no mini map, barely any hud. And I love that.

I wish more shooters would do their own thing, instead of just trying to be whatever is popular

*ahem* battle royale craze
