PS5 hits the 20 million mark, Sony planning to 'ramp up' production!

PlayStation 5 has sold 20 million units worldwide, Sony Interactive Entertainment told GamesIndustry.biz.

“We are thrilled to share that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has sold more than 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles globally,” said Sony Interactive Entertainment SVP and head of global sales and business operations Veronica Rogers.

“Since PlayStation 5’s launch, our teams have worked tirelessly to deliver a truly next-gen gaming console that has won the world over and we want to take this time to thank the fans for their support. Your passion for the PlayStation brand is what drives us and what inspires us to innovate new technology, engineer the future of gaming, and continue creating the best place to play.”

Rogers assured users who have yet to obtain a PlayStation 5 that Sony Interactive Entertainment is planning a “significant ramp-up” in console production this year.

“To those fans who have yet to get their hands on a console, please know that we are planning on a significant ramp-up in PlayStation 5 production this year and we are working endlessly to make sure that PlayStation 5 is available for everyone who wants one,” she said.

Wow, PS5 is on fire despite the pandemic issues and all that. And now PS VR 2 coming as well 🤩 What an exciting time to be a Playstation fan! Who has one and who plans on getting one at some point?

Makes sense, gonna be hard to push PSVR2 when they're struggling on console supply side, gotta remedy that.

Yea, Persona games are slow burners. You have to be vested in the characters/story to want to go through it. But once you get into it, the gameplay gets better.

My TV unit isn’t big enough to accommodate console so will have to hide behind the TV with the series X. So no point getting different colour.

Why wait 2 years into a console launch to "ramp up production" does this mean Sony has been artificially manufacturing scarcity ?

They've been trying to keep up with demand but they don't have enough materials due to the pandemic. MS was able to secure a deal and because of that, they were able to produce more Series S consoles.
