It will also have a disc drive and it seems that early releases will be cross gen. PSVR support out of the box. Seems like a seamless upgrade from the 4.

@n64dd: There are multiple 8K TVs on the market currently.

As for the ray tracing claim. The GTX 1060 currently supports ray tracing. So expectations need to be kept in check there.

Why do you keep buying this bull?

Any modern chipset would be able to support those features 2 years from now.... doesn't mean they will be worth anything. just like 4k was barely existent on consoles this gen.... 8K? Why? why ? and why? indie games in 8k? cool?

Ray Tracing... same issue....

SSD as standard? yea.. probably a64GB SSD for the OS.... lol

I always enjoy this kind of time when new consoles are being announced. It's good to see someone from Sony talking about it though. I am very happy about the backwards compatibility part.

Some of these claims are really wild, SSD and 8k aren't things I would have expected.

I'd like everyone to keep in mind that anything with HDMI 2.1 will be 8K..... So that is basically a gimme for anything coming out in the next few years.

The spec is 8K/30fps, or 60-120fps with compression.

Very excited about the SSDs.

@Pedro: The PC equivalent CPU will be the midrange Ryzen 5. That kinda spooks me on the price. The current consoles are using CPUs that are super cheap. If we are beefing up the CPU, going 8+ tflops, GDDR6 RAM, ssds, custom audio chips... Get ready folks

Definitely will be backward compatible since it's using the same architecture.

8K probably via checkerboarding

Will do similar levels of ray tracing already being done by crytek on AMD hardware

SSD will most likely be standard, probably M.2's like on mobile devices. They just won't have much storage space. I'm guessing 128-256GB with an external HDD option until prices come down.

I find this time of each generation very fascinating. Console gamers get excited over new tech, overhype power capabilities etc. But then when we start discussing price the narrative goes straight to cuckoo land. Sony could charge $599 for what is being described and they will be selling at a loss.

But I know how this dog and pony show goes. We all want power but don’t want to pay for it. That’s why we ignore PC gaming the way we do. Well until we need something to compare our next gen overhype to...

Also probably worth adding that AMD has been keen to stress that technically any chip can support raytracing. Whether or not devs take to open RT standards like they have RTX is going to be interesting. It's a fine goal though, to be sure.

The most important aspect to me is the backwards compatibility. The SSD thing is a fairly desirable feature as well. I’m not really expecting too much from the 8K and ray tracing functionalities though.

Housed in the console will be an AMD chip that has a CPU based on the third-generation Ryzen. It'll have eight cores of the seven-nanometer Zen 2 microchip. Although the console will support 8K, displaying at this resolution will be dependant on TVs catching up.

Come on people you know better they are not saying games will run at 8k,it will support that resolution you know how many AMD and Nvidia GPU support 4k display but can't run a single modern game or even pass gen at 4k?

So 8k maybe for the OS and nothing more or maybe a shitty indie game.

SSD sound doable but i don't think 2TB.

Well the PS3 GPU and CPU were both over $100 in cost to Sony but was blu-ray also what sky rocket the price 60GB hdd as well.

Remember this chips will not cost sony what it cost you to get one on store, not even close.

Hell the Xenos was more powerful than a $550 7800GTX on 2005 but it cost MS like $100 each chip.

I get that. But consoles are far more comparable to their PC counterparts than ever before. I know Sony will get the parts much closer to cost, but that is still going to be far more pricey than what they used with the PS4. The Ryzen 3 line smoked the consoles and were around $100. Now we are talking Zen 2, probably something close to what will be the Ryzen 5 3500X. The middle of the road 8 core / 16 thread chip. That CPU will probably retail for around $150-$180. That already makes the profit margins suuuper thin when compared to the jaguar cost. Then we are talking more expensive RAM, ssd's, custom audio, not to mention a GPU that needs to rival a RTX 2070 at least for any of this next gen stuff to be worth it.

When the chips used in consoles were more custom, it was more difficult to gauge cost and performance. Now that AMD is pretty much throwing PC parts in the boxes, it's far easier to make a ballpark assumption about what to expect. Well for everyone excpet @ronvalencia that is

The biggest new feature here is the audio chip, which is a really important thing for VR. Can't wait to have spatialized audio standarlized in gaming.

Get ready for more hype than actual real world performance. This is midgen upgrade 2.0 with a faster CPU.

8K displays aren't even out. 4K isn't even the standard yet (the RTX 2080 TI can barely run games in 4K at a respectable frame rate). This is just marketing nonsense. Or the console is coming out in a decade.

Would you like yours delivered by Thursday, or wait until next week when you can get delivery plus installation?

Sure, prices are high now, but as we saw with 4K TVs, they fall quickly.

It will support 8k. Not render native 8K. Much like the Xbox One S supports 4K TVs but it still renders ~1080p.

I am not the one who is making midgen 2.0 with faster CPU for the next console iteration. Take your complaints to the Sony (also Microsoft) not me.
