https://gamingbolt.com/ps5-and-xbox-series-x-gpu-gap-doesnt-really-have-a-development-impact-dirt-5-dev

According to DiRT 5 lead designer Mike Moreton, that’s not going to be the case. Speaking in any interview with GamingBolt, when asked about the difference between the GPUs of the two next-gen consoles, Moreton said, “From development and gameplay perspectives, it doesn’t really have an impact. When it comes to tuning, tweaking and optimizations at the end of a game, it might mean slightly less work for one platform.”

So basically development effort for both platforms should be identical. He did say that "When it comes to tuning, tweaking and optimizations at the end of a game, it might mean slightly less work for one platform." and I'm sure he's talking about the PS5 here. So the phase where they polish the game might take slightly longer on the PS5 since the Xbox has the extra performance.

It'd be interesting to see if there are other devs who share this sentiment or if it's just their experience with their game.

Did anyone expect them to have a big difference when at most the difference in compute performance is 33%? That amounts to a tier of GPU of the same generation.

He is correct. The games visuals should be near identical. At least for awhile. But one (XSX) will have better performance.

Why for a while? The PS4 didn't need 2 years to show the gap it had over the xbox one, neither did the Xbox one X over the Pro it was instantly there, it was 40% more power and 45% in the xbox one X case and was there.

I haven't see this gap here yet, maybe i am jumping the gun but 1 month before release this gen we already knew what was coming.

The xbox should have better performance if graphics parity is keep, if the PS5 dials some shadows or some settings we may end with the same performance.

@Zero_epyon: Are you sure they don't mean it will take longer for the Series because they have to optimize for both the S and the X? It depends what they mean by platform and if they consider the S and X two different platforms.

That's a good point. I assumed it was the PS5 since the context is PS5 vs Series X.

I didn't realize we have actually seen people like DF analyze the performance of multiplats on both systems. How about we wait until real tests are done before we claim anything.

Personally I do not think there will be much difference between either the XSX or the PS5 ... perhaps the X will be able to have higher sustained fps at a better resolution than the PS5 (i.e. if a game says 4k60 for both perhaps the XSX holds a steady 60 while the PS5 might drop a few frames) but we don't know until a non biased source gets their hands on them.

The architecture between both machines and power is close enough that this doesn't come as a surprise.

I mean 9 vs 12 is nothing.

Off course there will be a development "gap". You are developing for varying specs. The Series S also has a development impact.

Its pretty much up to MSoft to show the power difference. I won't judge based on cross gen/multiplats games.

Will two teraflops make a difference? I think so, to some degree, it's two teraflops. Does it matter? Not at all, it's not going to stop PS5 gamers from enjoying the games, the graphics and everything else. It just sounds like damage control to imply that two teraflops is nothing much. It is, it's done, let it go. In terms of development, there won't be much difference. But once they start pushing both consoles, there will be "some" difference.

Can you point me in the direction that i should look?

Several developers until now have claim same resolutions and frames, i don't know how well that will hold, but that is totally different to the scenario we had on 2013.

The PS4 had higher resolution and in many cases faster frames on top of that as well, same with the xbox one X vs the Pro.

@regnaston said:

Actually waiting is fair enough, but i tell you on 2013 we didn't have to wait, developers confirming resolution already painted the picture.

COD 1080p on PS4- 720p on xbox one.

BF4 900p on PS4 - 720p on xbox one.

AC 1080p on PS4 - 900p on xbox one.

And so on.

I don't think the series X has the power to command higher resolution and faster frames at the same time, unless a developer screw up something.

There is no enough power there the PS4 and xbox one X both had 40% and 45% more power not just 18% more and had faster memory all around in both cases, not just faster on one side and slower on another on what appear to be a split memory set up.

Thats the gap between the 5700 and 5700XT the gap is simply small.

The article also added this:

Of course, it’s worth noting that on top of all that, multiplatform developers will also have to keep the Xbox Series S’ much less powerful GPU in mind, which means the gap between the PS5 and Xbox Series X is going to end up being irrelevant.

I am waiting for the 30% or more gap lemmings several which are on THIS THREAD advertised..🤣

So were are the 4k xbox games that are 1440p or 1800p on PS5?

It didn't took years for the PS4 or the xbox one X to command a lead the lead was there on launch of both hardware period there was a quantifiable gap.

I'm thinking there will be differences. Kinda like gta 4 and ff15 where there was more shrubbery on the ps4 games. Maybe a little more special effects and/or higher res shadows/textures on the Series x, but I don't see it being a massive difference if the ps5 can sustain its oc like Cerny says.

I don't think development between the two will be very different, they are very similar consoles.

Performance matters and that's what she said.

Anyways though, I'll be playing most games on either console in performance mode for more frames per second so I don't really care either way. The biggest things I am looking forward to on both consoles is faster loading, more on screen, and more speed in game all around. For that.. there is much more likely a smaller gap for people like me. I'm sure that in full blown "push the consoles to their brink" mode that the XSX will outperform the PS5, but that's kind of the point.
