Spiderman's NYC map is going to be "several times larger" than Sunset Overdrive.

When asked to compare Spider-Man’s rendition of New York City with the map of The Witcher 3, the folks at Insomniac explained that they couldn’t make that specific comparison, but they offered instead another indication, mentioning that it’s “several times larger” than Sunset City, the setting of the studio’s previous game Sunset Overdrive.

I haven't played SO yet so I don't know how large it really was. Anyone have any insight on what we should expect?

Eh, I won't care how large it is, more of how much meaningful content it has.

As an example- Super Mario Odyssey's New Donk City is purportedly only six blocks, but it looks insanely dense and fun, full of fun things to do.

Do you mean it's 6x6 or something like 2x3? 2x3 seems like it would be too small.

I hope so.

Sunset Overdrive's city wasn't meant to be big. Not the way that game handled its mechanics. Spider-Man needs a bigger one to make the webbing around feel Spider-Man-y.

I just heard it's six blocks, I honestly don't know what the exact layout is. That said, NDC is supposed to just be a hub, so maybe it isn't too big. Idk

SO was more of a vertical environment not a horizontal one.

Either way I hope they do Spidey justice.

Bigger Size will Backfire this game if Web Swinging remains the same as it was in that Trailer. It was Too Slow and in one part Spiderman Turned Right when his web was attached to the Left Building.

I don't care about how big maps are in these games. It just make the game more of a chore than anything else.

I think the bigger you make it, the more you are exposed to repetitiveness and emptiness....it's a shame that the size of an open-world has become something to be proud of

Sunset Overdrive was most of the times, wasn't as big of a Sandbox game then any of the Infamous games themselves. I just hope Spider-Man PS4 game has the same size level sandbox from Infamous: Second Son since that was a good size for it's time.

Definitely. I prefer a smaller, more focused open-world like Arkham City rather than a giant city.

Sunset Overdrive's map wasn't very large. It was built like a massive Tony Hawk level, every aspect of it had to be built around the movement mechanics in the game. Making that a lot larger wouldn't have serviced the gameplay well.

Spiderman needs a larger map to swing around in but the map doesn't need to be as detailed for every building and street.

SO wasn't very big but there was a lot going on screen though. But it was big enough that you could have fun traversing without touching the ground, so for Spider-Man being able to have even more space for web slinging is a good idea. Insomniac did a good job with the traversal in SO, so I expect Spider-Man to be even better.

We should really use existing Spider-Man games as a reference rather than Sunset Overdrive. We know what we're getting, we're getting another NYC. What I want to see is more interactive environments and really good traversal.

I agree and Spider-Man 2 fits this discussion more so cause for a sandbox at it's time, the web swinging was really well done, the city of NY was big enough as it is and I really hope this new Spider-Man game lives up to Spider-Man 2.

Sunset Overdrive's city was tiny so I should hope that Spidey's would be a hell of a lot bigger! It was like, 40% the size of Fallout 4's map.

@davillain-:

Stop putting Spiderman 2 on that pedestal! It was great for its time but it is already overshadowed by Spiderman 3, Web of Shadows and the other free roam Spiderman game that comes after it.

Spiderman NEEDS to be bigger because you traverse the world much faster.

Web slinging wouldnt feel right in a smaller world.

Sunset Overdrive benefits from its smaller world because you traverse in a much slower way. Grinding would get old in a huge world.

Its not about size, its about the type of game you want to make and whats the best fit for it.

Well the only thing they have showed when going through the city was a QTE event chasing a helicopter. If that is how the "open world" is then it sucks. It could literally be the size of Alaska but if you can not explore it then who cares. Is it just going to be one cardboard building after another for the sake of QTE parts.

You are the one damage controlling since you attack but have nothing to say. If there was video of some real city exploring you would have posted it.

Fine show me a video of him being able to walk around, look at people, look into stores, just like how any open world does this stuff. Think GTA, Fallout, heck even Saints Row, and even Crackdown you can do that.

If there is a video like that I will admit I am wrong.
