PS4 Ships 67.5 Million Units As Sony Boosts Predictions (expects to ship 79M by March 2018)

Sony today reported earnings for the quarter ended September 30, and among the notable takeaways for gaming is the fact that the PlayStation 4has now shipped 67.5 million units worldwide. Sony shipped 4.2 million units during the quarter to boost the new total to that figure. 4.2 million is up from the 3.9 million units that Sony shipped during the same period a year prior, so the business is growing.

It's the highest quarterly shipment figure for PS4 since the holiday period last year, when Sony shipped 9.7 million units. Last quarter, shipments stood at 63.3 million units.

This slide also shows that Sony is now predicting to ship 19 million PS4 units by the conclusion of its current fiscal year, ending March 31, 2018. This is up from the previous forecast of 18 million. Whatever the case, this is down compared to last fiscal year, when Sony shipped 20 million systems.

Sony's Game & Network Services division, which houses the PlayStation business, saw its sales rise 35.4 percent year-over-year to ¥433.2 billion. Sony attributed the uptick in sales primarily to stronger PS4 game sales, including digital, as well as the uptick in PS4 hardware sales. Operating income for the division came in at ¥54.8 billion, up by a significant ¥35.8 billion compared to the same quarter a year prior.

"This significant increase was primarily due to the above-mentioned increase in sales, partially offset by an increase in selling, general and administrative expenses. During the current quarter, there was a ¥3.1 billion positive impact from foreign exchange rate fluctuations," Sony said.

When looking at all of Sony's various divisions together, the company had a strong quarter, with sales rising 22.1 percent and operating income jumping by a massive 346.4 percent. Check out the chart below to see a further breakdown of Sony's earnings.

Sony was not the only big game company to announce earnings today. Nintendo did as well, reporting strong surges in revenue and profit, while also stating that the Switch will outsell the Wii U after just one year on the market. Electronic Arts will report earnings later today, October 31, so keep checking back for more.

• The gaming division has had a huge increase in profit from Q2 last year and Sony now expects 79M to be shipped by the 31st of March 2018 which is 19M for the fiscal year.
• 4.2M in quarter means that this is the PS4’s best Q2 so far. It also is the PS4’s best H1 (7.5M) and best PS4 sales from Jan-Sep (10.4M).
• The gaming division is showing an operating income of $485M for Q2, which represents a 188% increase from Q2 2016. Around $641M for H1.

Surprised that those shipment numbers haven't decreased. I would presume we have reached saturation with the PS4 by now. Guess not.

PS4 were launch late in 2013, it's been almost 4 years now and so with that, not everyone has gotten a PS4 just yet and no point in slowing down. And people talk about consoles are dead, bitch please, this proves consoles are still high demand.

And this is why Sony and cows don't give a F about Xbox-X.......

It took a while for PS4 to get rolling when it comes to game quality but it's been there for a few years now and the sales numbers reflect this.

Outside of charging for online play, the PS4 and Sony deserves it's success. Definitely the undisputed best console this generation both in quality and quantity

This is great news that PS4 continues to be high in demand and with it's buttload verity of exclusive, this is proof exclusive games will always carried the console thus why we buy them to play exclusive games. Power is one thing, but exclusive is another story.

Also, if the PS4 continues to sell like crack, there's no reason for a PS5 at this and until we see PS4 sales decrease, then Sony will announce PS5.

Yup, I think this is why we probably won't see a PS5 till 2020.

The PS4 is a fantastic console, I think it is becoming my all time favorite PlayStation Console.

The sheer amount of great games is astonishing. And yes, I'm counting exclusives, third party, PSN games, PS Classics, PS Vita Cross Buy and PSNow.

The games look great, the console is reliable, and it is user friendly.

That's why it's selling so well......and it still hasn't even hit the $199 price point yet! (I have a feeling the Slim might do that this Holiday)

Unholy cowzerz that's a whole lotta buyers remorse going on out there and that's before they realize Mighty X1X MonsterBox hits the street and feel had they'd known, they too could have been a MasterRace contendah. lol . Oh well, live & learn I guess. :P

A PS3 Slim price drop on the release date of the Xbox one would further increase these numbers.

PS4 might hit 100 million within the next 2 years and most certainly in its lifetime.

thats insane. 100 mill+ lifetime sales is definitely possible and would put Sony with 3 of 4 consoles over that milestone, very impressive. Drop that $199 bundle and watch them fly off the shelves

I don't own a PS4, but I'm very impressed with the system sales, that's a very good number, and proof that they can move systems after what happened to both PS3 and Vita.

Poor, poor lems. They were hoping so hard that the announcement and release of the X1X would flatten the PS4. The exact opposite has happened, lol. The PS4 is more popular than ever. Guess having an ever expanding library of top-quality exclusives matters after all, huh, guys?

Sony provide sales as well, unlike another company that boast about accounts and hours spent updating a new UI.

That’s great news that Sony still continues to do well with the sales of the Playstation. I still believe while exclusives help drive a system it isn’t the main factor. Playstation did well out of the gate with the price and none of the bull that Microsoft was doing it was the obvious choice unless you’re a hardcore Xbox fan.

Ultimately, I don’t believe just because something sells well it translates it into being a better product.
