So my understanding is that on X1X on a 1080p screen, if the game runs at a higher resolution then the system will downsample/supersample the image. However, this doesn't happen regularly on PS4 Pro, unless the game devs implement it, if you have a 1080p screen then it wont run at a higher resolution.

Apparently supersampling has now been added in the 5.50 beta system update, though it could cause lower frame rates

List of notable games that will with this update finally offer supersampling on your 1080p TVs:

- The Last Guardian

- Dishonored 2

- Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

- Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

- Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection

- Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix

- Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (Dream Drop Distance)

- Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

- Metal Gear: Survive

- Life is Strange: Before the Storm

- Nex Machina: Death Machine

- No Man's Sky

- Injustice 2

- Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana

- Everybody's Golf

- Call of Duty Black Ops III

So if you have a pro and the beta update, have you noticed a difference?

@drlostrib: I think the cows are busy circle jerking in the PS4 shipped thread.

Don't you have a PS4? maybe you should try these out for yourself and report back because the cows might be a while LOL.

A forced thing without a developer building a game with the feature will not end well.

The frame rate won't be any lower than using the higher resolution mode on a 4K TV.

Honestly it's what a lot of PC users do all the time:

Supersampling via outside programs

Or what I personally do a lot: Force games into 21:9 via outside programs.

I don't have a Pro, just my regular launch PS4. As far as I can tell, I didn't even notice anything unusual while I'm gaming.

I'm not in the beta, so cannot test it yet. Sounds like a great option. I bought a pro for the best possible 1080p and framerates on PS4. It's nice seeing Sony cater to users like me, because some devs are lazy with their patches.

It'll more then likely use the same method of doing it as it's a GPU feature but the higher the resolution you downsample from the better the results.

So X will still produce better imagines but I personally would prefer to play at 1080p with downsampling and a pristine image with no shimmering or anything then at 1440p or higher.

Never understood the idea of super-sampling for consoles. For PC, aside from someone who has a 1080p or low resolution monitor who doesn't want to upgrade giving their system plenty of headroom--there's also very little point for it. Super-sampling takes up resources just like playing the game at its native high res lowering framerates. Might as well just play it at a higher resolution with a lower framerate. If its a old game where you can go way over the resolution because you have too much power--that game already isn't the most graphically advance--super sampling isn't going to make it look any prettier. For the PS4 and XBOX, there's no point, you'd rather take the performance improvements over what little enhancement super-sampling can do on such a under powered system.

Is it exclusive if boost mode? Because it shouldn't be - then you'd have a decent chance at having your cake and eating it too.

I played FFXV in high resolution mode on my old 1080p TV, you're saying it didn't downsample it then? The performance was affected, so I presume it did. Besides, this update has zero impact on 4k TV owners, so MEH.

@drlostrib: There is games out that already do that, but I guess this option is for all games. Curious if you can have boost mode on and this... Probably one or the other I'd think.

@Epak_: If the game is patched for it, like FFXV, then yeah, it will downsample. Cerny explain all this when the Pro was revealed in 2016.

Lol Professional. PS4 Pro has no real value since it's "upgraded" feature set is mostly half assed. X1X is the true professional console if you can't get a PC and want pure graphics.

I also hear new update is basically updating digital game management to pretty much match what MS is doing on XB1and has been for years. That's good though, better late than never, and having them both do this reinforces the standard. I'll crack up hard though if this gets praised like it's new, like cows when they discovered party chat, and how they continually trash the XB1 for allegedly having a broken UI.

Actually, I do. Super-sampling is basically taking a higher resolution image then downscaling it back down to the lower resolution providing better aliasing. What else is there to get?

Let me explain.........

For PC, aside from someone who has a 1080p or low resolution monitor who doesn't want to upgrade giving their system plenty of headroom--there's also very little point for it.

I ran down sampling while gaming at 1440p, can't beat that pristine image quality! There's plenty point to it and with how expensive MSAA is in modern games it's actually cheaper performance wise to run down sampling rather then MSAA...... And some games don't work very well with AA...... I remember Dead Space having major issues with AA back in the day.

Super-sampling takes up resources just like playing the game at its native high res lowering framerates

Well said captain obvious

If its a old game where you can go way over the resolution because you have too much power--that game already isn't the most graphically advance--super sampling isn't going to make it look any prettier.

Completely reduced jaggies, 32xAF (effective), no shader aliasing, no specular aliasing....... that doesn't make a game look prettier? I think you'll find it does.

For the PS4 and XBOX, there's no point

Did you ever think that some people prefer image quality over resolution?

@scatteh316: Sure, show me a game that you super-sampled and then show me one at a higher native resolution. I'll wait for you images. I think you'll find that most folks will agree with me. I too run super-sampling--I have a 4k TV and a 1080p monitor. Some days I game with a mouse and keyboard in which I enable supersampling on the 1080p monitor, and no--the image quality isn't drastically better--slight but not drastic. Given I had the headroom--why not? The matter of the fact is Dead Space will look like Dead Space--a 2008 game. No amount of super-sampling will make it look like The Witcher 3. For the 4k TV, its better to just run at native 4k or 1440p depending on framerates--the 1070 is a 1440p card. The whole point of super-sampling is that it uses a higher resolution to be downsampled--so if you can already run "that"--yes that resolution that super-sampling is already using--might as well use the higher resolution rather than downsample. Why would you downsample from 4k to 1440p when you can already run 4k? The downsample image is suppose to be referenced from the 4k image is it not? To each their own, if you really think that downsampling is that good, I'm not going to stop you. But as far as consoles on concerned--again, no point. Its such a weak hardware its not needed--the extra performance would be better considering these two new Xbox 1 X and the PS4 Pro still struggle to even reach 60fps on new games.

Because you might have a 1440p monitor and not a 4k monitor you fucking idiot........

Why do you seem to think that it's exclusive to lower resolutions?

I PLAYED games at 1440p and down sampled from 4k or higher because I had the head room..... Jackass.

You really are proving to be as clueless as I accused you of being.

LMFAO. Insults don't score points my friend. So basically you play 1440p with 4k downsampling because you have headroom? So basically you are saying what I just said? Okay.............Let me italicize and underline this point for you because we are basically saying the same thing for a PC user yet somehow, supposedly, I have no idea what I'm talking about but you do. You have a lower resolution monitor than the 4k resolution you are downsampling from--as in having a 1440p monitor, as in a lower resolution monitor than 4k, as in you don't want to upgrade to a higher resolution 4k monitor--so you have headroom for downsampling. You know as in my original post, "aside from someone who has a 1080p or low resolution monitor who doesn't want to upgrade giving their system plenty of headroom". Perhaps I should have said a lower resolution monitor than that of which you are dowsampling from--but hey, without throwing insults on anyone's intelligence--considering that I have put out so much information about performance vs downsampling and headroom--I would have assume someone with any understanding of super-sampling would have understood the reference of having a lower resolution than that of the super-sampling image. Perhaps a misunderstanding of our situation? Or perhaps I'm still the idiot here for some unknown reason. Whatever the case, the point here in this discussion is console super-sampling--to which again I will reiterate--there's really no point, its better to take the performance than the super-sampling. But hey let me state it this way just in case I'm not clear and cause further misunderstanding--if the console can provide enough head room to not affect performance when supersampling--then you use super-sampling. There, I've stated both sides without leaving much to the interpretation.

Ps4 pro will now give 2 options to 1080p tv owners:

supersampling (downscale) from games that have higher resolution option on 4k tv.

what it does? improve image quality on 1080p.

Boost mode: improve framerates and add stability. smoother gameplay.

Now 1080p owners have great reasons to buy ps4 pro. If you like image quality or better fps you can choose.

DOH!!!!

Or maybe people just choose image quality as they prefer that option................ a simple concept you're still failing to understand.

There's people I know and in this forum who bought a Pro/X for down sampling purposes only on a 1080p set.

You would think this would be hardware based rather than each developer have to make changes for this functionality.

I use a Pro on a 4KTV and monitor so even though I have access to the beta I can't see the benefits. This is a good option for people with only 1080p TVs though. I dunno why it wasn't there from the start on a universal level but it's better late than never.

Now we just need Microsoft to try and catch up with some games.
