From our friend at SonyEra. Congratulations to PS4 for the milestones, making games more widely accessible to everyone and the amount of highly acclaimed titles available on it.

Some major breakdown:

  • PlayStation 4 is now the console which has sold the most games in video game history, with at least 1.577B games sold
    • Surpassing PS2's 1.537B games sold, previous record holder
  • PlayStation Platforms sold more than 337m games in FY20, the highest yearly software sales in PlayStation ecosystem (or any platform holder I might add)
    • Previous record was FY18 with 287.9m games sold
  • PlayStation 5 sold-in 3.3m units (LTD: 7.8m) and is now the most sold console during its first fiscal year
    • Beating PS4's 7.6m units in its launch fiscal year, previous record holder
  • PS5 : 3.3m in Q4 FY20 / LTD: 7.8m
    • Biggest console launch in video game history, surpassing PS4's 4.5m units
  • PS4 : 1.0m in Q4 FY20 / 5.7m in FY20 / LTD: 115.9m

Congratulations on the milestones!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some money bullshit for those that cared:

  • PlayStation reached an all-time high of $6.24B Revenue during Q4, a new record for the industry
    • Previous biggest Q4 Revenue was Sony Q4 FY18 with ¥498.1bn (= $4.52B)
    • A jump by +27.3% from previous biggest Q4 Revenue
    • First time, any platform holder ever reached $5 Billion and $6 Billion Revenue during Jan-March
    • Biggest Revenue ever for PlayStation (and for any platform holder) during a non-Holiday quarter (non-Q3)
  • 109m MAU (monthly active users)
    • 109m active users each spent about $120.26 on average on PS Store in FY20
      • It includes Digital Software + Add-on but no Services revenue
      • That average spending grew +44.0% YoY
      • Biggest yearly average spending per active user ever recorded on PS Store

Playstation has made as much in profit, as Xbox has in revenue this quarter. That is wild. And it's gonna continue to be that way as long as MS is wasting money on Game Pass.

its quite unexpected tbh, considering the games that is new and should be significant mover were only Demon's Souls and Spidey:Miles Morales.

Edit: oh I think you may meant full year. Then yeah ghost of tsushima and last of us part 2 sold well.

@Duckyindiana: no one said Sony is Nintendo. They rely on 3rd party a lot. Just say congrats and move on. The amount of mental gymnastics Lems have to play seems exhausting.

Yea, Lems should just call it a day, say congrats, and go play Tropico 4 that they just got for free from Phil.

I do find it crazy that there is 109 million Monthly active users that paid for games on PSN. That is like 96% of total PS4 base. PS digital attach rate is mindlowingly high.

Comparisons to Nintendo Switch:

Nintendo switch all time selling software up till Dec 31, 2020:

Sony FY 2020 only:

PlayStation last year sold 2/3 of Nintendo Switch YTD total software up till Dec 2020. Just goes to show no matter how much Nintendo Switch sells, it is still heavily depended on 1st party. Seems like not many buying 3rd party games over there on Switch. Make sense considering how piss poor games runs on it and many gamers on the system may not know 3rd party content exist.

So cows spend more money on microtransactions than they do on exclusive games? Those first party sales numbers vs the money spent is wild.

Those that were impressed by the Xbox numbers should be blown away here. Sony makes more in PROFIT than Xbox brings in as REVENUE. Series X/S will also be the 4th best selling console of 2020. Then there’s the Xbox services revenue. It’s low and expected to go down next quarter. I did some digging and found that Game Pass is being included in laptop sales at most major retailers. That Game Pass sub number is fake af. The revenue numbers kinda prove it

Now we wait for Nintendo numbers

Profit is great for the Tax man as well as shareholders. Your average gamer? Not so much.

Gamepass is great for your average gamer. Long may MS “waste” money on it.

Should note that Sony counts all software sales in that total, while Nintendo doesn't include digital-only games. But yes, PS sells more software than Nintendo, which I guess means you're gonna act as if that's all that matters lol

EDIT: Also, for successful platforms software sales increase significantly each year. For Switch, 1/3rd of its total software sales happened from April through December 2020. The results next week will make that close to half, meaning the total will have nearly doubled in 12 months.

Lmao curb that delusion of yours, Nintendo will be sued for lying their investors. Of course it matters, it just shows how 3rd party continues to suffer on nintendo weak ass hardware.

Hmmm, Playstation gamers seem to be getting great games out of the deal. Kind of what happens when you're not running a spite-driven business plan. Remember, Game Pass only exists because a) Sony is beating MS's ass in this sector b) Xboxers don't buy games.

Grats Sony. And maybe grats @sakaixx who now could excitedly make a forum post on System Wars and take jabs at people who bought toys that don't come from Sony.

I really hope he's not above 20 years of age. Imagine a grown up doing this shit. xD

Great job to Sony (and honestly everyone). SW is yawntastic as everyone is doing really well right now so the comparisons just keep confirming that they are all "winning".

I know where the data comes from. You're not understanding me correctly though. They include digital sales, but only if the game is also sold in stores. Games that are only sold digitally (like most indie games) are not included, The reason they're not "sued for lying" is that there's no lying happening; the investors are aware of this since Nintendo states it themselves.

1 Software sales units include both packaged and downloadable versions of software, and do not include download-only software and add-on content.

@sakaixx: Wouldn't say even funnier than being above 20 years of age and frequently post sales numbers from your games console of choice comparing it to sales numbers of another brand for ownage on the internet, but yeah, that's funny too.

@BenjaminBanklin: Spite? So did Sony offer downloads on psnow at no extra cost to spite Xbox? Did Sony offer a boatload of games for free to spite Xbox? Did Sony continue to offer free online gaming when Xbox was charging to spite ms?

Or was it just market reaction on both sides?

As usual, you guys think this is personal and if there’s any spite around it’s flying out of the Cow shed.

@Litchie: Ikr? People get triggered at the smallest facts. The amount of mental gymnastic they go through to disprove facts presented just so they can sleep. Its just comparisons of recent competing hardware to show what kind of monumental year it is for the main topic focus but you know, people "feelings" matters more right heh.

Microsoft is taking this personal. They've taken it personal from the jump. It was obvious when they stopped reporting numbers from hardware. When you pay more into the console war than you get back, it means you're in it for the wrong reason. I can't imagine many other ventures that would nurse an unprofitable sector for damn near a decade, and possibly years to come.

Hell, MS has been FAR less tolerant with other products and services that didn't make them a profit. Xbox represents the toxicity of gaming applied to the business sector. Refuse to lose, do ANYTHING to win, no matter the cost. It's thoroughly nihilistic.
