I read the recent press release by sony and the march 12th story by gamespot "sony opens up on home". Many articles boast about how users will be able to auction off items and earn money online. Looking past that there are some glaring admissions by sony. Firstly, it's not a persistant world, so when a person leaves, so does his belongings and apartment. This is not second life, although they have said they will add it eventually. Secondly, In order to play an online game with someone you all have to meet in a "localized" regional lobby and then decide what game to play. After you've gone through all that trouble, you have to shut down your home, insert the disk and find everyone through your usual means via the playstation network interface. So whats the point? Why can't I just call the people? I know, maybe i want to meet new people, but who wants to go through all that trouble when you can meet the people online while playing a game. Finally is there even speech available in this game, every peice of footage I see uses manual entering of text either via an on screen keyboard or the traditional usb keyboard. I'm PS3 owner and a x360 owner, and I was hoping that sony would have come to the plate with something more to answer microsofts xbox live. I'm not impressed.
