PS3 may still have problems even after the $400 SKU.

The problem isn't exactly that the PS3 is too expensive, the problem is that its competitors are offering cheaper alternatives. With the Wii going for $250, and the new X360 Arcade running at $280, moms and dads are not going to be looking at that $400 PS3. For Sony to be able to compete, they need to have a competitive SKU that will be priced at a similar range.

There is no doubt that we will see a surge in PS3 sales this winter, but will gaming enthusiasts be enough to last in the end?

This holiday, yes. Sony needs to get more casual gamers to the PS3 by next holiday, but for this one, I think hardcore gamers can carry them through.

I have a feeling that ultimately the Playstation brand will beat MS, being that it is just so big,but only after losing a ton of market share.

The $400 price point is still too much for the general public. The 360 debuted at that price and has only sold 12M in 2 years. That's terrible.

farrell2k

Name the last $399 console to sell that much. None you say? Exactly.

Who's gonna buy a $400 Blu-Ray player with controller ports when for $50 cheaper they can get aGAME system that's packed with 2 GAMES? You know, the reason people actully buy a GAME system.

HD movies account for 2.5% of all moveis sold, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD combined. That, and HDTV is not as universal as people seem to think.

Blu-ray is not that big a selling point to a casual market right now.

Thats who bought the original Xbox and I think it turned out fine. The only thing I wish SW would understand is that, compared to last gen, sales of all 3 consoles are pretty poor.

come on now. the ps2 did not sell 120million consoles because 120million parents bought one for their children. we all know ps2 sold so well because people bought it with their own money.

I think this is what is going to push the PS3 over the 360 at that price point. The brand name for the playstation is pretty strong and people will think twice about it since the PS brand has been going solidly for 10 years now. Of course, PS3 still has a lot of work ahead of it with providing more games and such.

Also, the blu-ray player will help it somewhat as well. Some people will take this opportunity to buy it as a high def movie player.

Anyone with sense that's who. PS3 does have plenty of games and many more on the way. It's a far far better deal for the hardware any way you look at it.

UK+Singstar being released this holiday season+ 40 gig PS3/price drop on the 60 gig= huge surge in sales.

I don't think people on here understand how big Singstar is over there in the UK,it's like the Halo 3 of the Uk.

I don't know where your getting the fact that casuals and consumers are stupid and don't know the value of what there buying. but why wouldn't someone buy a 400 dollar system with blu-ray and spiderman 3 included Yeah you can get the 360 for 50 less but does that have a high def format no and moms and dads do know that the 360 breaks on you. the ps3 does play games plus more. more bang for your buck.

Of course. They need games.

Which they get next year with GT5, MGSIV, LBP etc (too many to list). For this holiday season, they just need to sell decently, and not get completely trumped by the 360.
