One of our biggest gripes with the PS3 has been how poorly the system downloads files: you can't resume broken downloads, nor can you do anything whilst your system is downloading a file. No games. No movies. No music. Nada.

This was all supposed to be fixed in Sony's upcoming 1.6 firmware update. But, is it already broken before its release? Apparently so. The Inner Bits has "obtained" info about the upcoming firmware revision, and it's not looking good. The background downloads are limited to while you are in the XMB. If you launch a game, the system will pause your download because "the PS3 needs extra system resources (primarily memory) to do background downloading."

If this is indeed true, it certainly can't be due to the system's inability to play a game and download a file. Although Sony's system has the hardware to deliver the goods, it seems Sony is just not creating user-friendly software to take advantage of the system's "potential." Will we have to wait for yet another firmware revision for Sony to get this right?

You know, I don't download **** on my PC while I'm playing games. It takes resources. So if I need to download something on my PS3, I'll do it while I'm not playing games.

That's odd that you can't do anything...

At least on XBL you can go and look at other things on Marketplace while it's downloading.

I've never honestly tried playing a game while something was DLing on Marketplace. Good to know that it actually does work.

As long as you aren't playing a game on the internet (like gears online), you can download anything at the same time. Oblivion is the perfect example because...well...you can never go online so you can play that along with xbla games and such.

Maybe your PC's just ****, because the only time downloading should cause a performance hit is if your game has to hit the hard drive instead of memory, in which case you don't have enough memory.

Remember when I said that Sony's crap at creating software platforms compared to Microsoft? Probably not, but yup, this is direct evidence of that fact.

1GB of RAM, but the fact is, it's sucking up bandwidth while I'm trying dominate in CS:S...While it's fine while playing single player games, it's a big no-no for online gaming...

In some games I can see it being a proble, but they should seriously find a way to fix it. How about having the downloads use less memory when a game is running? These things can be properly managed with good coding.

Tell me what Gold members get that Silver members don't except for gameplay. As for why it can't be added to PSN, they already said why: downloading takes resources from the game. That's a screw-up that only a hardware-centric company like Sony can produce because of their poorly planned software platform coding.

It IS A PROBLEM, especially when the deluge of game videos hits during E3 (or its replacement :(). And ESPECIALLY when Sony comes out with those TV and movie downloads (just like XBL, but worse).

Hah, red herring, nice try. Just because a system is optimized for gaming doesn't mean it should ignore other features. And isn't it funny how the PS3, being the "jack-of-all-trades" here, is doing WORSE at the non-gaming features than the 360? Jack-of-all-trades, master of none, it seems. BTW, less than 10% of the market actually plays games online. Don't overstate the importance of ONLINE GAMING compared to ONLINE CONNECTIVITY. The biggest draw of Live is the friends list and Marketplace, not online gaming.

My point is that it wasn't there and I didn't see a problem with it then nor do I see a problem with it now.Would it be nice to have it sure but PSN is FREE...you have to take the good with the bad.

Xbox Live is FREE. It's just online gaming that costs money, and only 10% of the market actually plays games online. In other words, only 10% of the market actually benefits from the PSN being free, while 90% suffer. Typical of Sony's new philosophy: cater only to the extremely vocal minority. That's why we now have BluRay weighing down the PS3 with $200 of unnecessary circuitry.

and sony hopes to keep pace with xbox live with this kind of mess?

good luck...

mjarantilla

LOL...your saying that this FREE service is lame because you can't Download and play a game?Did you say that when live launched and it had the same problems...but you had to PAY for it?

i'm saying the "free" service is bug ridden...

i'll pay for not having bugs... call it a personal preference for quality..;)

It's not a bug...you download something but you can't play a game,SOWHAT.You don't have a PS3 and have no room to speak on the matter,I'm telling you first hand IT'S NOT A PROBLEM.Shysun21 Live/shysun PSN.

It IS A PROBLEM, especially when the deluge of game videos hits during E3 (or its replacement :(). And ESPECIALLY when Sony comes out with those TV and movie downloads (just like XBL, but worse).

So you saying they have untill summer to change it?...because none of that stuff is right around the corner.

And they won't change it. They said so in the announcement: downloading takes resources away from the game. That's indicative of poor planning by Sony's developers, and cannot be rectified without a significant workaround.

Er, no. You could pause downloads, resume them. Play music, chat online. Browse the dashboard... lots of things. Just not play a game; and it was quickly added later.

Only the part about no background downloading. But the first major XBL update gave us COMPLETE background downloading AND download queuing.

Or maybe they should de-prioritize the vocal minority and pay attention to the 90% that want something else. Oh wait, that's exactly what they did. And they're reaping the benefits for it. Whereas Sony, with their typical obtuseness, compromised the majority to cater to the minority.

I don't play games online, free or not. So it makes no difference to me. Just like 90% of gamers. Something Sony doesn't seem to understand.

You know, I don't download **** on my PC while I'm playing games. It takes resources. So if I need to download something on my PS3, I'll do it while I'm not playing games. TekkenMaster606
Diddo. Even if you could download while playing a game, it would take bandwidth away from the game if I'm playing Resistance online or something. It's really not that big a deal for me.

No, I'm saying Sony is bad because they ignored the majority and paid attention only to the hardcore yes-men who do not represent the majority. Stop twisting my words.

[QUOTE="ragrdoll21"] As for why it can't be added to PSN, they already said why: downloading takes resources from the game. That's a screw-up that only a hardware-centric company like Sony can produce because of their poorly planned software platform coding.

I though the 360 was all about "GAMING".So what is live without Online gaming?BS thats what it is,and I feel sorry for the guys with a 360 and can't even play their games online.:(

You can get an entire year's subscription for $35 these days. :| Or if you dont pay a lot, just get a month when you get a game you want to play online, for like $4. What are you complaining about exactly?

Makes no sense? It makes no sense to try and cater to the LARGER audience, and polish the experience for EVERYBODY rather than just a tiny fraction of your market? Right.
