Some very weak lists so far. Couple sprites here and there, a background, maybe an overlaying effect. When I think sprite games I think animation--everything looks to be in motion.

I thought this thread was about specifically the quality of the 2D sprites in which case I would say Muramasa: The Demon Blade ranks pretty high as far as visuals go, along with most of Vanillware's other games as well (Dragon's Crown, Odin Sphere, Grim Grimoire).

A 2D sprite game as a whole I would say Sonic 2.

@BlbecekBobecek: Good games for sure but not many people would consider them "GOD Tier." They are outclassed by many others. A lot of gamers and critics alike put games for NES and especially SNES for a reason. Many of those games able to go toe to toe with the best 3d games of all time or any modern game now. PC Prince Of Persia and Another World? They may be part of gaming history but they are rather clunky and outdated compared to something like Super Metroid for example, or Mario3 or World.

@Heirren: I think Scott Pilgrim doesn't get enough love, and Rayman Legends is just a stellar looking game in the 2D spectrum, but these are all subjective honestly we could go on for days.

For instance I didn't even go into the smooth animations of The Guilty Gear or BlazBlue Franchise in their sprites and heck you pulled out Bullet Hell games that I didn't even consider.

@edo-tensei_: Just install DOSbox and play the original Prince of Persia. It is still THE best 2D game ever made imo. Perfect controls, very nice graphics, beautiful level design, excellent puzzles, clever combat system, amazing atmosphere.

Another World is a bit too different for the taste of most and needs some getting into it, but nonetheless it is amazing game.

Lost Vikings... Just a super fun puzzle game from Blizzard.

I personally think that noone mentioned those games so far because noone here actually played them through.
