Hello friends,

In this thread we vote and discuss what we consider greatest FPS of all time shall we? I left out expansions/DLC or it include with original in poll because i cant put every single game on poll. but put many and many of them that consider among fan fav.

For me STALKER SoC always remain best FPS game of all time and i dont even think STALKER 2 will beat SOC as it was once in lifetime game. follow by Half life and Half life 2.

Doom and Doom Eternal is best modern FPS of all time a perfect mix of old school and modern elements.

Stuff like Deus Ex and System shock are deep FPS/RPG hybrids/immersive sims that are among best games ever made.

Rest of them fall under great to good to me.

so friends lets make a vote in this giant poll so we figure out what is SW best FPS game consider of all time in history.

From first time experiences, big wowza holy shit, it's definitely Halflife. If you played that when it came out basically shat on other FPS.

However, through the years, replaying it over, it's definitely not perfect. And something more condensed like Opposing Force offers better replay value.

As far as Le_Perfection goes, probably go with Doom (not DOOM) and Quake.

Quake and Doom aren't quite perfect, it's boss' as with most FPS are garbage, but otherwise the synergy of level design, weapons, enemies and so fourth are all masterclass.

Out of the two put Quake slightly higher than Doom, mainly because it's level design was focused more finite combat with more advanced technology for the level design itself, and it's really brown. Not Quake 2 brown, but very, very brown.

Ultimate Doom puts Doom into more of a mixed bag, while it has incredible god tier maps like The Perfect Hatred (which was made in 6 hours), the other maps aren't to that quality and thus excluded it.

He didn't even vote for DOOM Eternal, the game he keeps making 5 threads a day for.

I'm disappointed tbh.

Eh, I can't agree. DOOM has pretty basic level design and I'm not a fan of its "hunt the key in the maze" gameplay

Half Life just did it way better. No, it's not a perfect game, but you are constantly doing different things: you are shooting, you are platforming, you are puzzling. Every level has a theme and gameplay loop, something no other FPS (other than Half Life 2) has ever done.

The only thing that bothers me with my 100th replay of Half Life (3rd replay of Black Mesa) is the inventory management. When you get loads of weapons it just becomes hard to manage them all.

If we're talking about pure FPS, Q3A nailed everything I could have wanted from an MP game - movement, engine, map design, balance - everything. It's literally a flawless game AFAIC.

When comes to level design Doom is definitely more complex than Halflife's, like, wouldn't even say it's remotely close. But then, it's apples and oranges, they aren't really aiming for the same thing to begin with.

Talking about gameplay variation, yes, Halflife and especially Halflife 2 win in that regard. I don't think any other FPS really does match Halflife 2 when it comes to it's Bruce Lee be like water mentality.

Stalker's a very fine game, maybe even my personal favourite overall, but it's a lot of the background non-FPS stuff that made it riveting. As an FPS, it's got quite a few issues.

Doom Eternal is for me the most satisfying and fun. Not a dull moment. Extremely well thought out mechanics and balance. The game is great at teaching you how to play, while at the same time leaving a lot of room for creativity. I really hope game designers study this game thoroughly, because it's a master class in how to make games.

ID made themselves proud with this one!

Yup, Half Life 2 tries all these fresh things in a shooting game and it just works.

Instead of your trusty weapons you can now use antlion bait, and there are two levels built around it. It all works.

Instead of using your weapons you now get a gravity gun, again it just all works and there are entire levels built around it that remain really memorable to this day.

There is no greatest anything of all time. The only people who sub to that is fanboys of a particular thing looking for validation.

Voted Half-Life, no clue why you have Deus Ex games on there because they're RPG's. OG Deus Ex is the best game on the list.

It odd because Alyx fixes Halflife 2's biggest problem - weak ass shooting, while ignoring it's biggest strength, it's constantly shifting gameplay flux.

And, fuckall to do with VR itself beyond maybe driving, guessing it's more to do with the new teams.

Classic Doom games have stood the test of time best, I actually fired up Doom II this morning for first time in a while and it is still a lot of fun to play.

@i_own_u_4ever: Thats what i was about to say... No UT 2004.....

Also you have Halo CE but not 2 or 3.

I would have picked UT2004, but since its not here ill just go with Quake 3.

Im assuming UT2004 and only Halo CE out of the Halo games is here because of Ghosts disdain for MP FPS... But he did include quake 3 and counter strike. Your bias SP FPS choices are bad Ghosts...You included every doom game but only Halo CE and not one UT game. WTF lol

That's honestly putting it lightly. Half-Life was so far above and beyond other FPS in 1998 that it essentially invalidated the rest of the genre.

My problem is that I don't know what "greatest" entails. Is that the best single player, multiplayer, story, mechanics, or all of that together?

I voted Halo CE because it's by far the fps that I've put the most time and effort into. Heck, we still set up LANs every few months, with the friends I made through this game. The single player is pretty good, and the multiplayer is second to none imo. It showed that fps on console could be great, and standardized the control scheme for most console shooters. I love it so much that I've disassembled controllers and Xboxes to clean, and replace thumbsticks, repair wiring, etc. No game have I ever put so much effort into.

Half-Life is clearly a fan favorite, but I've only played episode 2 briefly, and can't speak beyond that.

Soft spots in muh heart would go to Duke Nukem 3D, Rogue Spear, Raven Shield, CoD 4, Wolfenstein 3D, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Doom (og), GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, and Timesplitters.

1. Halo CE (Bungies original, not the 343 abomination)

2. Duke Nukem 3D

3. Half Life 2

4. Doom 3 (with the Absolute HD mod). It's also one of the greatest survival horror games ever.

5. Stalker: Shadow Of Chernobyl (with the ZRP patch). Another top tier survival horror experience.

I just picked a favourite by playtime. Yeah, the whole idea of an objective best's silly really, but SW would die if we all admitted it. A game can be perfect in its execution and still hated by everyone, just like the total reverse can be true. I'm pretty sure all of our favourite games, songs and films are changing constantly. Couldn't answer the Mario Vs Sonic thread yesterday for exactly that reason - like, as a kid, or now? Totally depends on who you ask and when.

RTCW was objectively a blast though, hehe.

@filthyn00b: Don't have that much experience on Q2 MP, but played the hell out of that map on QL. Easily the most enjoyable freeze tag map. Best bit was trying to see how many players you could freeze on the elevator, or just crushing them underneath by cornering them with gauntlet on normal game modes, lol, so much fun. CA was more my thing though TBH.

I remember there was a poster on here - JigglyWiggly or something who used to grief the hell out of players on Instagib but not sure if he still posts at all. I was never 100% certain if he was aimbotting or just a damn good player but he put out a few videos on YT which are worth checking out. GS forums has had some real FPS talent over the years.
