PlayStation.com Redirect Suggests PS4 Is Indeed The Final Name

Wednesdays are for the PSN Store Update. Everyone knows that. Whatever digitally distributed goodies youre shelling out for preoccupy all your thoughts. So its not really a huge surprise that there hasnt been much in the way of meaningful, interesting games news today.

On days like this, we have two options. We can either give up trying and just post bits and pieces like Sleeping Dogs and Hitman Absolution being cheap on PC at the moment or Bohemia Interactive making Arma Tactics for Nvidia Tegra things and putting mocap in it. Stuff that would barely warrant a sarcastic line from Tuffcub while hes filling up Snatch. The other option is to mess about on the internet and uncover something odd, interesting and probably completely irrelevant.

Weve plumped for the second option, because its more fun.

Visit http://us.playstation.com/ps4/ and it takes you to the PlayStation front page. Visit anything else, for example /ps5 or /orbis, and it doesnt, you get a 404 error.

What can this trickery possibly mean? Well, apart from the fact that somebody at Sony knows how to set up a proper redirect, it strongly suggests that Orbis is out of the window and Sony are sticking to prior experience: the PS4 will be wait for it called the PS4.

Orbis, then, was just the codename, as we suspected.

Worth noting that /vita takes you, via another redirect, to the PlayStation Vita page, so Sony are definitely setting these up for a reason.

Curiously, /playstation4 doesnt redirect, whereas /playstation3 does. Its certainly a hugely deep and exciting way to spend an afternoon.

There were concerns that Sony might drop the 4 due to superstitions in Japan, where the number is sometimes pronounced shi, which is also the word for death.

So, what do you think, dear readers? Is this a massive hint that the PlayStation 4 will be the, er, PlayStation 4 or is it just more evidence of an overactive imagination and a talent for procrastination? Does anyone really like the name Orbis anyway? And the most important question of all: can we go to the pub now?

Well Apple always names the successor to it's iPhones and iPads as numerics yet they are extremely successful. It's smart and helps sell the product.

Again there are maybe 30% chance the PS4 will be called a PS4.

Here are some reasons why i think the PS4 will NOT be named a PS4:

• PSVita was not called a PSP2 even tho PSP done extreamly well worldwide and in Japan.
• Number 4 means Death in Japan so highly unlikely they'll call it a PS4
• Since Vita means "Life" i expect Next PlayStation console to be called something similar to the Vita.
• It will have PlayStation in its name (duh)

Well, the Play Station is a powerful brand, it's unlikely Sony would drop it, especially when you take their current financial struggles into the account...

I would rename it "The Playstation".  If you ask me the name is dying and it needs a reboot.  It needs a new image.  This isn't your dads console anymore.  Sad but the PS1 released almost 20 years ago so people who were 10 when it came out are now almost 30 and very likely have kids.  The brand is old and needs help as proven by only 70 million sales whereas last gen it had well over 120million.

Good. I sure as hell didn't want them to pick a name as stupid as "Vita" or "Orbis".

I want the bext Playstation to be named PS4, stupid names like WiiU mislead the average consumers into thinking that the system is just a hardware revision.

Exactly. I hope they get rid of that dualshock though, make it a secondary controller or something (Wii U pro controller).
