PlayStation VR Turns One: One Million Gamers and Counting

A message from Shawn Layden.

One year ago today, the team at PlayStation was proud to introduce a thrilling new gaming experience crafted with a single goal in mind: pushing the boundaries of play.

PlayStation VR was designed to open a doorway into thrilling and captivating new worlds that electrify our senses. We are confident that virtual reality is that next step in in the evolution of the videogame medium, with a collection of more than 100 gaming experiences designed to make your synapses fire, your heart race, and your muscles twitch.

But we’ve been learning a lot about this medium along the way. Building the future of VR is a lot like creating a new language. Or maybe even an entirely new alphabet! With traditional videogame development, we can draw from nearly 40 years of experimentation, trial and error.

VR is a little bit different. Of course we’re still drawing from the long, proud history of traditional videogames development — but VR’s unique capabilities mean developing entirely different levels of artistry and engineering. Making VR a mainstream sensation will require the full efforts of our very best and brightest.

And as Chairman of PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios, let me tell you – the best and brightest are extremely excited about this powerful new medium. The biggest game developers and innovative independent developers have helped establish a rapidly growing PS VR game catalogue that rivals PS4’s at the same point in its lifespan.

So what’s next? For starters, I can tell you the best is yet to come.

More than 60 new PS VR games will launch through the end of 2017 and into the beginning of 2018.

Blockbusters like Skyrim VR, Bravo Team and The Inpatient will join the ranks of Farpoint, Resident Evil 7, and Batman: Arkham VR. New innovations like Moss, Starchild, and Rec Room will join Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Job Simulator, and Superhot VR.

The future is bright. And as we celebrate today, I want to give my sincerest thanks to the adventurous teams who helped create, shape, and build PlayStation VR. We are equally grateful for the one million-plus gamers who have taken the plunge into virtual reality with us. We’ll have a lot more to share with you in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

That's good start. Still needs more content, but then, VR is still in its infancy. The amount of VR games and 'experiences' will only grow. The tech will improve, and I'd expect PSVR2 to either launch alongside PS5, or come out within a year of PS5's release.

Once they push hard enough to deliver VR content beyond just gaming, the avalanche will fall and the technology will be more accepted by the mainstream. It's happening, though.

And they’re already ditching it and releasing an updated version lol. They needed that change, that update because to them the first one is a flop.

@gago-gago: as I understand it, the update's only a minor revision....

for better or worse, it's largely the same device.

It's more like Sony went half-arsed again when updating another one of their products. They may want to say the updates are minor so the price for the first version stays as high but regardless of how minor the updates are, it's not the same device since it will provide users different experiences. You won't be able to experience the performances and features found only on the PSVR 2.0 on the PSVR 1.0.

Definitely gonna buy it soon, plenty of great experiences coming to it. Rift is still more than satisfactory at the moment though.

One million in one year is not good especially given the size of the PS4 userbase. You know damn well if this topic was about an Xbox peripheral there would be endless threads gloating about its failure.

It's a peripheral cow, those sales are horrible given it's user base of 60M+ That's a waste of money at this point but what would you know, you cows love getting ripped off by Sony

Xbox One X is also an Xbox One peripheral; a peripheral for playing UHD Blurays.

But It has no games. Isnt that the reason cows hate Xbox so much?

OK one game RE7, a multiplat horror game which is even more niche than Forza.

Every time the next big PSVR game comes out the mantra seems to be 'wait til the next game comes out'.

PSVR fanboys be like:

I just can't see VR being worth the price. The content is almost non existent and the headsets are expensive as can be.

Oh, I dunno. How many developers has the Playstation fanbase been carrying since the early 90's? Not that I advocate fanboyism in any respect, but that was a silly question.

what do you mean carrying? PS fanboys have been toxic like any other group and defended bad moves just because they came from Sony

Don't see why you seem to have such a vehement dislike of one group and not the other

It's crazy, I know. The PSVR haters on this forum are the most rabid bunch of hateful fanboys I think I've ever seen. They are literally among the first ones to show up in every PSVR thread. Every. Single. Time. They post essays of hate, memes, gifs, misinformation, outright lies--anything they can to try to downplay the PSVR and any success it has seen. It's like Sony choosing to innovate by being the first console maker in history to offer a VR option has made these guys up and lose their minds. And then they'll turn right around after bombing a thread and say that they don't really care about PSVR, that it doesn't bother them at all, when the truth is collectively they've written entire books on the subject on this forum. Sheesh.

Anyway. More great news for PSVR fans, and VR fans in general. Lots more games coming, and many this year. It's been a great year for PSVR. Tons of releases. The community is moderately sized, but really, really solid. Can't wait for Skyrim VR! Also The Inpatient! Also Bravo Team! Also DOOM VFR! And a bunch more. Great VR times ahead! :)

Great success for the industry leading VR headset! As price comes down expect even higher sales. PSVR2 is all but guaranteed for the PS5.

LOL @ the asshurt FlopBoxOne fans in here. Raging hard because their console of choice doesn't even have a VR option.

Sad that Sony has more games launching in VR this year than the entire FlopBoxOneX lineup.

Keep trying cow, PSVR is a flop and it won't be long before Sony abandons it completely. 1M out of 60M+ user base hahahahaah if it were in 3 months that would be 1 thing but an entire year later hahahahaa it's pathetic

That last point hits hard, dude. It's so true. The PSVR has launched more exclusive content this year than the entirety of the XB1 lineup. Hell, the PSVR--a peripheral--probably has more exclusives to its name than the entire XB1 library.

Yeah, lems have got nothing but gifs and memes. Meanwhile, PSVR continues to lead the pack among high-end VR headsets. It's all good, though. They can talk all the smack they want. I love it!

It's all good, luv. Just remember that at the end of the day, I think it's fine if you don't like PSVR. You're not a gross stalker-type, like some around here, so you're okay in my book. :) Bring on the PSVR hate! Hehe.

The highest selling VR model is a flop? Sony is going to abandon it when they just released a new model? Jeeze lemits lost their minds.

The highest selling VR model? It's the only one available for the PS4 and it's selling like shit. The user base is well over 60M and it's only at 1M after an entire year? That's absolute shit no matter how it compares to the other shit selling VR units. It's not rocket science cows, you need to sell a hell of a lot more than 1M for devs to continue to support given the attach rates for most games on any peripheral.

We all know you blindly follow what ever Sony does but don't be fooled by the "highest selling" VR headset. Shit sales are still shit sales

Yeah, lems have got nothing but gifs and memes. Meanwhile, PSVR continues to lead the pack among high-end VR headsets. It's all good, though. They can talk all the smack they want. I love it!

Hahaha you're trying to call it a high end VR unit? Of the 3 it's the worst of the bunch. It's hardly "high end" but whatever helps you sleep at night.

Sorry to burst your bubble but shit sales are just that...shit sales. History has proven peripherals do not survive with piss poor sales and the devs will abandon the product at the drop of a hat. Make no mistake about it 1M in 1 year with the user base at over 60M is piss poor by definition.

Sorry I hurt your feelings cows but truth is truth

Guess I hurt your feelings. You cows keep brining up it's highest selling VR unit but none of the VR units are selling well and being the highest selling of those is the equivalent of being the tallest midget(small person or whatever PC name you want to call it). You liking it is irrelevant

The only reason why not that many have bought it is the price, I sold an oculus dk2 this week, the guy never tried vr and just bought it so he could try and experiment with some of the games. The oculus dk2 may have somewhat better tracking, it doesn't have any motion controls or you have to use the cabled razer hydra's or use hacky software for move controllers. There no 360 degree tracking in steamvr, where you can only use the motion controllers.

The image is shit compared to the psvr, but the price is lower.

For a lot of people 400$ is too steep of a price, and then you don't even have games or motion controllers.

So 1 million for the psvr is not bad at all, and it will keep on selling, vr has a future, of course you need to have tried it to realize that.

As much as i want VR to succeed in the long run we aren't there yet. the PSVR isn't any good and the PS4 can't power it. Maybe next gen it'll catch on with a better headset and more powerful consoles.

with that said 1 mil is stupidly low. FWIW the kinect came out when the 360 was about a 60mil user base, and sold 18mil it's 1st year. hopefully it doens't die out like the kinect. remember 3d games? I had a couple, it was cool but that was a short lived fad. AC3 and batman arkham city were in 3d

Dude, pretty much everything you just said is flat out wrong. The PS4 can't power the PSVR? Really? So, my PS4 has not been powering my PSVR for a year now? What are you even talking about? The framerate holds steady on pretty much everything I play on PSVR, from RE7 to DriveClub to SuperHot to whatever else. And as for sales being "stupidly low", the PSVR literally has outsold all of the other high-end VR gaming headsets. And you're comparing it to the Kinect? How's that work? The PSVR is a peripheral that costs more when all is said and done than the freakin' system it operates on. And why are you mentioning 3d games? VR is an entirely different experience from flatscreen 3d gaming. Like night and day.
