Basically, it sucks to get less while still paying more, and when what you're getting dips in quality

I miss the original instant game collection

This meant that beginning in March 2019, PS Plus subscribers would only gain access to two free PlayStation 4 games each month. Granted, the PS3 and Vita offerings had become incredibly stale for the most part, but there was no denying that the subscription had lost value. Even if you never touched the PS3 and Vita lineups, you were still paying the same amount of money for fewer games.

Still, many were optimistic -- including ourselves. We figured that Sony must be increasing the overall quality of the PS4 freebies in order to make up for the reduced amount of included games, and when March 2019's PS Plus lineup was revealed, our optimism seemed justified

However, one month later the quality took an obvious dip. The Surge and Conan Exiles were April 2019's offerings -- not terrible games, but certainly not great either. Roll on to May, where we got Overcooked and What Remains of Edith Finch. A return to more highly rated titles, but without sounding mean, neither was the kind of blockbuster addition that most subscribers wanted to see.

This was evidenced by the backlash that quickly followed May's announcement. PlayStation's official YouTube channels and social media accounts were absolutely battered with criticism -- it was the kind of PS Plus outrage that we hadn't seen in a long time.

Right now, at the time of writing, the backlash is, er, back, and it's arguably bigger than ever. Yesterday, Sony revealed July 2019's PS Plus lineup, and to say that it hasn't gone down well is a severe understatement. Next month's selection includes PES 2019: Pro Evolution Soccer, and Horizon Chase Turbo. It's another case of getting two good games that just don't have mass appeal.

From where we're sitting, PlayStation Plus needs an overhaul. Now look, £50 a year for online play, 24 "free" PS4 games, access to cloud storage, and a bunch of regular discounts on the PlayStation Store is still pretty good value. The real issue lies in the fact that PS Plus used to offer more for less

We're not saying that Sony's about to ruin its success if it doesn't reshape PS Plus as a service, but it'd do well to carry the momentum of this console generation forward into the next as efficiently as it possibly can.

The company's been labelled the bad guy when it comes to cross-platform play, and now, PS Plus is starting to raise a similar stink. It's a burden that the Japanese giant simply doesn't want to shoulder as we head into the next generation -- a revised PS Plus could work wonders, assuming that Sony gets it right. It could be something of a clean slate for a service that many have grown weary of.

Do you think Playstation will step their game up with PS Plus? What would you like to see added? More games per month? Something with PS Now?

No, they wont step up their game. Nor do they really have to. Any free game is good IMO.

An article whining about PS Plus games, how brave. Why not step it up and ask why we're paying to pay online at all. And then that money can be saved to BUY some games.

I wonder if Sony will give up on physical or whats't he deal...

Digitial would work I guess if we all agreed on one big spot to hold all our games/memories etc... but which one would it be?

WEll there you have it I suppose someone is still in that game.

I kinda wish I knew more about video games rather than just being a fan all the time like what numbers they need to be profitable for Y Z X etc..

As fans we just sorta guess and stuff but business is so complicated and all that.

I thought I saw a rumor awhile back that said they were gonna do a higher tier or "premium" version that would give a larger selection of games and some other nonsense.

I'm already a hairsbreadth away from dropping plus, so upping the price probably won't dissuade me from leaving.

PS Plus has been a hit or a miss. June 2019 was pretty good in my opinion, Sonic Mania & The Handsome Jack Collection was worth the admission in my opinion, that was a nice solid PS Plus for June if you ask me. And no, I haven't sub to Plus in a very long time, just remember you get what you pay for. As of now, Sony is focusing on PS5 and I be surprise if they will match MS Gold/Game Pass once PS5 arrives.

I do believe the word you are looking for is "rental" not free. Steam, UPlay, Nvidia Experience, you name it offers what we call true "free" games you keep forever. That is what Juub1990 is trying to tell you the definition of FREE!

@vfighter: I guess it always comes down to whether you're into the kind of games they offer. I reckon PES 2019 is a big title, I'm just not into sports games and neither are lots of people. Maybe I got a bit spoiled when they used to give away games like Bloodborne, MGSV, Infamous, GOW3 Remastered, Mad Max, etc.

Avatar image for Arkhalipso

@ten_pints: It's not like people play PS plus games long after they get them. I could stop having PS plus today and not regret not being able to play them. Besides, in the case there are some games you'd like to keep playing without having to renew your subscription, you could just buy them. Most of them are dirty cheap.

The extra 10% discount during sales is worth the year price alone if you buy games regularly, and even more so if you manage to get it for $40 or less.

I don't see the big issue. 2019 so far.

  • Steep
  • Portal Nights
  • For Honor
  • Hitman First Season
  • Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered
  • The Witness
  • Conan Exiles
  • The Surge
  • What Remains of Edith Finch
  • Overcooked
  • Borderlands The Handsome Collection
  • Sonic Mania
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2019
  • Horizon Chase Turbo

5 more months to go.

They could probably throw in a PSVR game every other month.

My anticipation is they will make substantive alterations as their next-gen plans develop.

This isn't a bad list of games and people need to stop complaining, it would be different if we were getting indie or AAA titles that scored horribly but a lot of these are great games even if they don't have "mass" appeal.

Everything in bold I've played quite a bit already, so I feel like I've got my money's worth. Sonic Mania alone is almost worth the entire price of Plus.

Everything in Italics are games I was interested in before they were announced for plus, but didn't want to pull the trigger to buy them, now I don't have to!

Not a fan of PS Plus or XBL gold. Console users have to pay just to play online which I think is silly. The Xbox ultimate subscription is great though and Sony should respond in change.

They're the current gen market leader, they don't have to do anything, probably why they don't. Just like they should have tried bridging PS3 BC of PS1/PS2 classics on PS4 but didn't because MS's BC wasn't a threat... yeah.

Game Pass is worth every penny so I won't have to actually buy an Xbox One console. Wish Sony would have something like that.

The future of gaming is going to concede to this model in the end. Gaming doesn't need to be hardware locked and there is simply more revenue to be made with hardware agnostic gaming. The downside is the Steam effect where shitware bloats the system.

@Pedro: I don't mind Steam having a lot of crappy titles since it's very easy to find the good/great ones and decide for yourself. I'd rather have that than the store choosing for me what is good/bad.

I understand but clutter causes good games to fall to the wayside, making them not profitable enough to continue.

Yeah it’s pretty lame that they stopped providing PS3 and Vita games to PSN subscribers. They should have at least kept providing PS3 games. I really like how Microsoft does their service because all the 360 games they provide are backwards compatible so all you need is an Xbox One and you get 4 games each month plus with the 360 games you get to keep them even if you choose not to subscribe to Gold anymore.

My hope is Sony offers:

2 PS4 games

1 PS4 PSVR game

1 PS5 game(when it comes out)(Later increased to 2 games when they have them).

That would be awesome.

@shellcase86: July isn't even a bad month, a new soccer game which is popular as hell (not my cup of tea but oh well) and an arcade racer which I've been looking to play since it came out. Best month ever, no, but still another solid month.

Why would sony do that? Sony games are actually good and worth money. Microsoft is throwing crap in like crackdown 3 and sea of garbage and state of crap 2. Microsoft cancel a bunch of games like scalebound and fable. It would only make sense for microsoft to throw crap in since the games make no money. Unlike bombshells like day's gone which is charted all over japan to the U.K in number one spots

So you're going to crap on Sea of thieves, but then your example for a sony game is Days gone which has basically the same meta score? Also the fable game they canceled wasn't the type of fable game people actually wanted

Also this was in response to Sony competing with game pass, in which case they would need to change PS Now to match up with how gamepass works

also, shut up

Yeah Sony seems to be in this awkward position where they'd need to commit to PS Now to make it worthwhile, but they're also reliant on exclusives to sell their hardware.
