This is the Canadian pricing. both prices are from thesource.ca I have also seen reports that in Poland the price for the disc version of the PS5 is more expensive than the XSX

So they price matched in the US but not everywhere else

PS5 --> https://www.thesource.ca/en-ca/gaming/playstation/ps5/c/scc-8-1-5?categoryCode=scc-8-1-5&view=grid&page=0&sort=relevance

XSX --> https://www.thesource.ca/en-ca/gaming/xbox/xbox-series-x/c/scc-8-4-4?categoryCode=scc-8-4-4&view=grid&page=0&sort=relevance

edit: changed title of thread to make it about more countries that are affected

It may be because of the conversion rate.

It as the same for the PS4 as well is not new.

Where i live Xbox is usually cheaper than Nintendo and Playstation because Microsoft have a bigger presence and use local currency to set prices; while the other converts the price from US dollars to local currency and that makes them more expensive.

I have decided to reply :D

Usually consoles in Canada are not a straight exchange rate from the US price in fact both the XSX and PS5 are cheaper in Canada if I do a straight exchange $499US = $656.38 the issue is that once you go over $599 the price is a bit much for CDN consumers to swallow. My province has 13% sales tax (federal and provincial combined) so the price of a $599 console is now $676 after taxes and the PS5 will be $710 after taxes (most provinces have a similar tax rate as mine, some are higher some are slightly lower one province has only a federal sales tax of 5% and no provincial tax but they are an anomaly.)

I worked in finance and in foreign currency for a number of years, and even i'm confused. Maybe higher shipping costs/border holdings, and MS is willing to eat the loss. Too hard to say without more knowledge. Still, an extra $30 at the $600 range could be quite detrimental to those buying for their kids.

Yeah I noted that in the PS5 price announcement thread, pretty cool of MS to eat the loss in that case. I think Sony should have matched MS' price.

Sony has a 90% market share here and Xbox is less than 10%.

So the PS5 is overpriced a bit.

Interesting. Unlike Microsoft and Nintendo, Sony is officially selling PS on almost every country on earth and have a local PSN Store in those countries. Buyers in those area simply had to get a PS5 for convenience.

@makotoniijima:

Have you ever heard of Supply & demand? Price elasticity?

if Xbox cost $100 and PS5 cost $1000 people here would still buy playstations.

Playstation is sort of like Ferrari, it doesn't matter if its competitors are faster, higher top-speed, more comfortable and more luxurious, people still buy Ferrari.

In this case though Sony has the superior product, so even an increase in price won't affect demand.

Welcome to foreign retailers. Been going since the ps3. That's why being cheaper was never the issue. I know the ps5 will be 509 in Greece. The xbox will be 499.

So they're raising it from a $1, is it still a $1?

You see i don't know because i don't use it (so much for that corporate shill huh) and seeing as you're the resident MS/Xbox/Phil Spencer expert i come to you about these matters.

Sony can afford to screw Europeans as most of the consoles gamers over here use playstations, so Sony can charge more for the PS5 and still get all the sales it wants because the PS4 owners will want to stay with Sony next gen in order to keep their digital game libraries intact.

What's funny about this is that Sony does not even recognize the existence of a lot of the smaller European countries, so people have to register as UK/German/whatever users in order to create a PS account.

Xbox is much less popular outside of the United States, that means Sony can charge more and people will still buy it since there's not as much competition there as there is in the US. Also, the US had a better global distribution network than Japan. But ultimately it's competition that drives down prices at a benefit to the consumer. If you want Sony's to be cheaper, skip them at launch and buy the Xbox instead. Or just go ahead and pay them what they want, they may see how willing people are in those places to buy at current prices and raise them again when the mid generation pro versions come out.

Phlop Spencer is right $30 is crap to people. Maybe so just likes American money and doesn't like other countries money, maybe the retailers charging extra cause Sony has a monopoly it could be anything.

And it cost me 70-75 dollars for PS4 games.

Where at steam, new release games only cost 30 to 40 dollars

@regnaston: Sony is a bigger brand dude. The biggest difference between the consoles is the SSD speed, fact. Series X could have the power of a 3090 and will still be less relevant than PS5. Truth hurts, sorry.

@BlackShirt20: what difference are you guys expecting to see? People are having a hard time telling the differences from current gen and next gen. You're all convinced Series S games will look like X with just lower resolution but think X is going to make PS5 look last gen 😂 No bud, it's Lems that'll be crying while holding their magnifying glasses looking disappointed. Keep on fanboying.

@Sagemode87: That isn’t true. That isn’t true in the slightest. There is quite a few games that have glaring differences in visuals. RDR2 looks night and day better on One X compared to the Pro. Same goes for RE Remakes, BattleFront 2, Marvals Avengers ect. Obviously these are more demanding games. But absolutely you can tell a difference.

Also, If you don’t think 30% extra horsepower isn’t going to result in more stable performance, I don’t know what to tell you.

@BlackShirt20: show some pics that shows these monumental differences.... Shouldn't be hard if it's actually noticeable. Stop ignoring what Sony says because you're desperate for Ammo. PS5 is 10.3 teraflops, not 9. Let's cut the crap here. There's no 30 percent difference. PS4 had a 50 percent difference and you guys bought an Xbox One anyway. Honestly, PS fanboys were pissed from gen 7 so they exaggerated the differences from 900p and 1080p. Don't group all PS fans together. I never saw a difference outside of a few multiplats.Truth is resolution is overrated. Congrats, you may or may not have a few more unnoticeable pixels. Won't change the fact that MS has a garbage first party effort.

@Sagemode87: Does it offend you when people point out the advantages of the X over the PS5? I am aware the PS5 CAN reach 10.28TF as a best case scenario. But that is ONLY POSSIBLE if you gimp the system of CPU power. You would know this if you watched the road to PS5 where Cerny himself stated that he suspects the PS5 wouldn’t drop more than 10% of its 10.2TF as long as there is CPU overhead.

X in the meantime has full access to it GPU (12.15TF) and CPU at all times. Which, sorry to break the news to you will be result in better overall performance. Fact.

Once we get CPU intensive games like Cyberpunk and start getting more next generation games, you will see the PS5 forced to sacrifice more GPU power. Multiple developers have confirmed the PS5 is basically a 9TF machine clocked high and runs hot. So while the power difference is 20%+ at times that number will rise as games require more and more CPU performance. This is a fact.

Which is why I laugh at cows like you who claim the PS5’s GPU is 10.3TF and CPU is clocked at 3.5 because it’s cannot and will not ever be both. That is why the system uses AMD Smartshift.

So, answer this....... If the PS5 ever reaches 10.3TF, where does its CPU drop; and when the CPU hits its max clock, how much does the GPU drop? Seems kind of silly you wouldn’t at want to know. I’ll tell you why you don’t know. Because they don’t want you to know it drops to 9TF. Devs have said as much. There for the power difference can be 30% or more. So yeah. Enjoy.
