PlayStation 4 worldwide sales reach 86.1 million

'Sony has wheeled out a new worldwide sales figure for PlayStation 4. The grand total now stands at 86.1 million units sold.

It's a rather odd milestone on account of PlayStation 4 turning five years old today and Sony needing an up-to-date statistic for an infographic.

Other nuggets of information include the most popular controller colour - can you guess what it is? Bloody boring standard black, that's right. Then it's red, blue, white and pukey camo.'

'Interesting fact - If all the PS4 were switched on at the same time the noise created would be loud enough to spilt the ear drums of the entire population of China'

There's a whole lotta buyers remorse going on out there. lol :P

Yeah, that's quite surprising really. You'd think the way the Sony fans on here go on about them there would be at least one in the top 5.

I seriously just met a guy who swore Xbox does not play used games!? And he gave all his games away, and switched to PS4 because he believed that xbox did not play used games!

The guy is obviously a casual noob, but there are many more out there like him. That 2013 reveal is still haunting them to this day. And Playstation is amazing at marketing & making people believe multipats are exclusive to them and that Pro really is native 4k. Hell I take my hat off to them this gen, they didn't even have to do a hell of a lot and the first 3-4 years of this gen proved that.

Well deserved. Sony has played their cards just right where Xbox has been playing catch up from their mistakes. Hopefully Xbox learned their lesson and will play there cards differently next gen. They have been doing a pretty good job after their blunder.

A bunch of stupid fanboys in this thread trying to spin positive news as bad for PS4. The biggest casual games are the most popular games on PS4, the most popular console on Earth? Wow, call the presses! You don’t get a lot of sales by catering to only the hardcore, casuals make up the base of any popular console and therefore the most popular games on a popular console are bound to be casual games. Why can’t MS release their worldwide sales as we are approaching the XB1’s 5 year anniversary too?

What you idiots should be asking yourselves instead of fanboying is what makes people choose the PS4 over the XB1 that has basically the same casual games for a cheaper price. It’s the exclusives that’s what. Until fanboys and MS get honest with themselves as to why the XB1 is trailing so far behind, the platform will continue to strugggle.

As for CoD, lol fps on thumbsticks. Runs/Looks better too. Matchmaking is instant. Better is better.

FPS is now a console genre. More people prefer "thumbsticks".

The fact it's objectively better on PC, but moved to console as it's home is shameful, on pc gamers end.

FPS is still a PC genre. It has more active shooters to play, PC shooters are what dominate esports, and PC shooters have more players overall than any other system when totaling them all. Even the big "console shooter" franchise Destiny is vastly superior on PC now.

BF, CoD, Destiny, OverWatch, CS, etc. on fumblesticks are a joke.

All those Brand Babies playing the 3rd best versions of all those big games.

Even Left4dead2 sold more on consoles and that's Valve.

For years now consoles have been the lead platform and sold more. They are now built with thumbsticks as the main control scheme.

Hilarious thing is that if you look at the most bought Xbox games it would be the same as the PS4’s. 3rd Party games are just that popular and casuals eat them up. The big question should be that if XB1 and PS4 have those same big third party games why do people overwhelmingly choose the PS4 over the XB1? It can’t be the price as XB1 has been cheaper than the PS4 since 2014 and it can’t be power since 1X is currently the most powerful console. It’s none of these things, it’s the exclusive games that give the PS4 an edge over the XB1 and cause most gamers to pick the PS4 overwhelmingly.

Mean while Xbox is killing it with all their exclus... oh wait they don't have any. Maybe thats why they're fast approaching last place....again.

1. That's because PC has so many more actively played shooters. It dilutes the pool. Also, L4D2 has more concurrent PC players.

2. They are not built solely with thumbsticks in mind. The PC versions are built with kb/m in mind. Which is why they play a lot better with kb/mouse.

3. PC is objectively the better place to play shooters. Nothing else matters. Not just due to better controls, but better frames, more actively played shooters, and a better competitive scene.

The once console only shooter Destiny, Gears, and soon Halo are even now on PC, and waaaaaaaaaaay better to play on it. I imagine anyone playing CyberPunk on console will be a sad sight.

1. Na, they just buy their games. It's pc gamings Achilles heel, "buying". The ones that sell are typically multiplayer as these require servers.

2. These are "ports", console is lead.

3. It is. But it's not their home. It was, along time back. But then Halo and Call Of Duty 4 came along.

Of course exclusives matter but it's not defining ms really got lazy towards the 360 gen. They relied heavily on 3rd party content and still sold a hefty amount of consoles.

2. They play better on PC, anything else is irrelevant. Besides that, not all are ports. Like Overwatch, tons of F2P ones, Valve ones, or the entire BF and BFront series.

3. You're correct, FPS is now a genre for all platforms. There is no way something that revolutionary was going to stay on PC. But they are still most actively played on and better played on PC, with a much higher selection of games and gamers, and best competitively played on PC.

I just love how the console only shooters are now also on PC and far far better on it. Such as Destiny, Gears, and soon Halo. They came home to the real FPS platform.

I'm happy with my PS4. Combined with my PC, I get to play pretty much every game that I want to play.

PC has 100-130 more high scoring games at GS (the site you are posting on) and MC this gen than the second next system. Thanks for beta testing RDR2 for me, btw.

Right? The almighty Halo came in 8th on NPD's LTD list for top Xbox One games, and Gears was nowhere to be seen. These dudes spirits are so broken they stopped buying games. LOL!
