I can't see this game lasting long with a decent population on PS4. I got bored of it pretty quick on PC anyway, I mean it looks fantastic and the general idea and concept of it is great but the execution is poor.
The game is only great when you have a very coordinated team playing and even then it just turns into a zerg fest. If you have a group of guys to play with often then you'll have far more fun with it.

I don't know the last time you played it, but they've implemented quite a few features to guide players into playing objectives rather than just trying to kill the enemy. They've also tweaked the hell out of the base capture timers, introduced more minor objectives at bases, reworked all three continents so the base design is more fun, implemented a system that guides armies along predictable paths so that fights can be predicted and planned for, and added tons of other little things.
Today's patch implemented something called the Missions System which automatically points players or squads at an objective. The idea is that a player or squad always has something telling them where to go next and bonus points if they complete it. The next phase is to get squad and platoon leaders control over this system so they can more easily assign more complex objectives like to escort vehicles, set up defensive positions, attack objectives, and stuff like that.
Though in the end the game is still built around teamplay. If you're not playing with a squad you're really not going to enjoy it long unless you really learn the ins and outs of how the game operates. I can lonewolf fine because I know every aspect of the game well, most players don't.
On the PS4 it should do quite well. Just like on the PC people will cycle in and out and those who understand the game's setup and enjoy working in large groups will finally find a home. Console gamers don't really have many options for this as MMOs on the console are scarce and there has never been any Battlefield 2 like game which puts a major emphasis on teamwork on a team level. BF3/BF4 are too squad based and small scale.
That and being F2P against all of the $60 shooters is huge. On the PC Planetside 2 not only competes against the $60 AAA shooters but also the smaller $30-40 games and the legacy games that have been around for over a decade. The PS4 offers a game a lot less competition.

I played it about 2-3 months ago, they had a lot of that stuff implemented and it was a very nice addition but it still didn't feel quite "there". Could be just my mentality towards the game either after playing so many different other shooters. But it never felt like it had that competitive edge, it didn't feel like fights were really well fought, took a lot of skill and were hard won. It still came down to which team was bigger in a certain area who won and overpowered everyone else. If that didn't happen then it was just a stalemate at a location and got very boring.
The idea of having 3 factions fighting on one map also doesn't really shine like it should. It just feels like a big mess of people at times like most MMOs end up feeling like. You do have objectives to work towards but with so many people running at them it all becomes kind of redundant. I've seen a whole platoon take out shield generators and then just camp in groups around them. Then you have the areas on the outsides of maps not being capped at all half the time because people are just zerging at certain sectors
The map design did start to get better compared to the vanilla continents where there are valleys funneling people into areas and I do agree that lone wolfing it is un-fun even when you know what you're doing.
What will determine if this is a big success is how well PS4 players work together to play it. Not everyone has a bunch of friends to play with so they will rely on in game team chatter to coordinate because if they just join rounds to play every now and then alone then the novelty will wear off fast. But yeah having it be F2P is a HUGE advantage for the game and that will ensure high numbers out of the gate
When will the game be ported to DX11?
IMO, this game should have come out this year, and of course DX11-ready.
Pretty stupid for SOE to release this game using DX9 knowing how CPU intensive it is. What a waste of resources.
great, an online multiplayer focused, FPS multiplat, ported from last gen, to this one. now cows can hype it finally as if all the Titanfall bashing and DC didn't happen lol.
Amazing! There were fifteen useful posts in this thread before you broke the streak with yours.
I've never played Planetfall 2, but a couple people have recommended it to me. I might give it a shot, it depends if I can get a few friends to try it with me.
well you should play it bud. its coming out in 2014. or you can just play it now on PC...and get those crisp graphics.
I have this thing where I really prefer to play online games with friends. If it's a PS4 game, especially a free one, there's a very good chance I can get a party going. Also it will be "new and shiny" even though it's just a port.
On my PC, my friends are a little less social. Not really sure why. I would have a hard time getting them to play it.
oh ok, that's understandable. so many cows seem to downplay that when lems, or whoever, mention Titanfall. usually its just posts of it being on PC, and that nobody will buy it on XB1 because they can play it at 1080p on pc with better framerate. its refreshing to see you go against the grain and admit that truth.some people just prefer playing on console.
Totally true. I have a decent-sized list of friends with the Xbox One. I have an Xbox 360, and I downloaded the Xbox One smartglass app just so I could see what games they play. Right, now, they play Titanfall.
I am going to buy Titanfall for my PC, but the honest truth is that I'd be playing with mostly strangers, and that just wouldn't be as fun. I love playing these sorts of games with a team of friends, on voice chat.
should have added the vid for more effect Wasdie
I must say with the scale, number of players, gameplay looking at the diversity of combat it's looking pretty freaking amazing.
Planetside 2 > Titanfail.
lol i play both and titanfall is much better than Planetside 2. Maybe they have made improvements to the game play but that game just ends up being super boring after a while. At first the scope and scale are just overwhelmingly impressive. Large battles that feel like a real war is taking place but you'd be surprised how boring that can get. Best part about the game is the flying though. Dog fights are fun. Compare to titanfall that has yet to bore me. It's constant action, fast paced, i feel like I actually have an impact on the game and score unlike planetside where you can just get lost. I'll go back to planetside once the PS4 version is out to see what updates they brought to PC but as of now I'd rather play titanfall 10 out of 10 times.

Almost all games get old after a while. Titanfall just came out so you are still in the honey moon phase with that game. When PSII comes to PS4 it will be a reboot like a new game and a new community that will be eager to play it.
The tighter console community online aspect that PS4 will offer the game and the updates and stabilization with having a standardized platform to be on could make all the difference with Planet Side II.
Free to play? Hell I know I will try and I am not even much of a shooter guy. Game has like an RPG level depth but in a shooter

i love Xbox Smartglass. it's really understated good and useful that app is.
@Wasdie: i remember the game was poorly optimized for AMD cpu's for quite some time.
It was not horribly optimized for AMD cpu's AMD cpu's are just weaker vs intel's. The game only used one core fully which is why the game ran worse on AMD cpu's because intel's are anywhere from 20-40% faster clock per clock depending on generation.

Unless I'm mistaken, it's also the only way to tell what Xbox One owners are playing if you don't own an Xbox One.
When I'm on my 360 they just show up on my friend's list as "Xbox One" with no game listed. I'm also told that Xbox 360 players just show up as "Xbox 360" with no game listed when using the Xbox One.
