Pillars was a game Obsidian had high hopes for. It's own original IP, no more rent-a-dev bullshittery. But it flopped. Will people buy it this time? Is this franchise just dead now unless it becomes Oblivion with guns? Desperate times my friends.

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2018-12-17-pillars-of-eternity-2-will-still-come-to-consoles-including-switch-in-2019

Pillars of Eternity 2

The planned console versions of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire have been fading from view ever since the flagship desktop version arrived in May and struggled to catch on. As time ticked by, the pencilled-in console release window of 2018 got smaller and smaller.

Then Microsoft bought developer Obsidian in November, throwing the whole thing into question. Would Pillars 2 still come out on console? Would it still come out on non-Microsoft consoles? We haven't had a definitive answer until now.

The answer is yes, it will. Pillars of Eternity 2 will be released on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One in 2019. The ports also have a porter: Grip Digital, a specialist in these matters.

Obsidian announced the news at the bottom of a blog post about the release of the final paid mini-expansion, The Forgotten Sanctum. Incidentally, the console versions of Pillars of Eternity 2 will include all three of the mini-expansions, plus all updates and DLCs released so far.

Alongside The Forgotten Sanctum comes patch 4.0, which adds a new sub-class for each class, including Blood Mage for Wizards, Debonaire for Rogues, Psion for Ciphers and a brilliant-sounding Furyshaper for Barbarians. There are new mega-bosses, new Magran's Fire Challenges, and more. The blog post linked above contains patch notes.

Yup Obsidian had to crawl to MS because of this flop.

Will still buy it for consoles.

Like always, every single PC exclusive that gets a little recognition or success gets ported to consoles...

I've been holding out to see what the Switch reviews are like, actually. If it's a good port I'll get it there. Otherwise, I'll grab it from GoG

This is a perfect type of title for the Switch, I'd expect it to do best on that platform.

Did it actually flop? Obviously it's a niche game, not going to sell a lot of copies...but did Obsidian have a tough time making a profit from it?

That'd be a shame, both of the Pillars games (and Tyranny) are excellent games.

Totally, would love to be able to have a portable version of this game. It'd be as good as reading a book in many respects, and better in a few others.

Tyranny flopped as well. Or at least "below expectations".

It would be interesting to know exactly how many people finished POE. I'm guessing not that many.

And if you're at a point of "I can finish that game later", why bother picking up the sequel?

Failed to be notable enough to gain popularity on a system with so much quality to choose from so send it over to consoles were there's a lack of choice and lower standards

And it's funny they always come at us with the "user base" argument when it comes to sales...how does this former PC exclusive work out for PC's installed 150 million user base?

Isn't it funny that this argument is NEVER applied to fanbase with the largest amount of current users?

But you always see PC fanboys using the user base argument against PS4 WTF lol salty jealous hypocritical bunch of clowns.

LMFAO...PUBG became the biggest thing on PC gaming in 2017.

Talk about lower standards, FOH with your unfinished trash beta project games with last gen graphics.

Keep begging for our exclusive and crying that exclusives are unfair because PC offers you shit for high quality exclusive content. Ha, "a system with so much quality to choose from"...has only won one major GOTY award in the last 10 years.

None of your tantrum applies to me because I own all systems, it's just a shame good games have to be gated behind shit hardware that gathers dust in the corner between forced exclusives.

Nothing I said had anything to do with exclusives - That's just the crutch you are used to using because you are a miserable console only fanatic.

@mariah_eater: and? Is it really a surprise that devs that ain’t being bought/pressured by Sony/ms want their games on as many platforms as possible to earn money?? You are aware that the reason GOW isn’t coming to pc/Xbox isn’t because the devs hate money or have a hardon for Sony right??

Anyway enjoy another great feast from the pc masterrace table consoletards!

I own all systems so sales numbers mean nothing to me.

Are you still on this website? Glad to see your life isn't getting better and your feelings are so hurt you need to use an anonymous account to attack people online to compensate for it :)

Imagine believing anything you say on this niche forum will actually have an effect on gaming at all, what a sad delusion.

The first one still had the truly awful real time with pause combat that was popular like 500 years ago but things have moved on. The second one has the same they learned literally nothing from the first. Worse, they listened to a load of beardy nerds on their forum who persuaded them to make their combat meaningless so they could role play the whole game without worrying about combat.

Clowns. Both them and their idiotic 'fans'. They should have gone turn based or just plain real time anything but that crap. Small surprise their target audience is so limited.

Now they have Phil Spencer to point them in the right direction. LMFAO! That's the end of that then!

Both POE games are great but both Divinity OS games are better.

I think Larian ate up a lot of the market with people who didn’t fancy buying both franchises.

It's speculation at this point that it flopped saleswise. There are anecdotes from investing backers and steamspy sales being low, but Obsidian has neither confirmed or denied reaching expectations, and SteamSpy shit the bed exactly around the time the game launched, so using it as a metric for this, and really most other games this year, is a bad idea.

Either way, I found the game great, plus it's critically acclaimed, and they're still continuing to provide content and support for the game despite a "flop" status. So it's hard to argue that it even matters at this point.

It's a great game, and I might re-buy it on the Switch if the port is any good.

Meanwhile, ugh, it seems to be monsoon season for fanboyish nonsense here on System Wars.

More games, more diluted pool of games, less overall sales.

Pleanty of Free2Play games that are better than AAA games in terms of lastibility and core gameplay.

In other words.. options.

Not waiting for that next big release because all the other releases were shallow 1 time consumables.

Wait the combat for the 2nd game is meaningless? Please elaborate? For non gamers, or walking simulator san Francisco living silicon valley types? Please tell me you are just talking about infinity engine pause and play combat, which I am fine with but turn based would be better.

Great to hear it’s still headed to consoles. I think more people should play this fantastic game. I might have a soft spot for isometric rpgs but it really is worth a play through.

A big user-base isn't a guarantee. People are pretty short sighted when it comes to isometric CRPG's.

From a commercial standpoint, Bethesda was right to turn Fallout into Oblivion. It's sales completely eclipsed the originals.

Will Divinity: OS 2 be on the switch? It'll be a killer if that one is on the switch. Portability plus CRPG on the go would be great!

Funny how the day prior to being bought by Microsoft, Obsidian was one of the coolest studios, but of course, ya petty Xbox haters already setting up your narratives so that when these studios release games you won't need them since you will have implanted the bullshit you're spewing right now.

They say Xbox fans get salty and cry about anything not good news, yet, Xbox haters cry and moan about everything, you literally complain about every Xbox game, yet if you spent half the time playing them as you do whining about them, you'd enjoy them.

I'm not sure how poorly it sold, but it's a highly revered game among those who have played it

It sold really poorly:

This is sad, because even if I don't like these kinds of games, they deserve to exist.
