Phil Spencer: "Why do you care about 60fps?"

GC: It’s the only number that affects gameplay and yet it’s the only one you two never go on about! No-one can tell the difference between 4K and 1080p and all that nonsense…

PS: You just said these games could run on a Commodore 64, they would not run at 60 frames per second on a Commodore 64.

GC: Uridium did.

PS: [laughs] I’m not disagreeing with you. But it’s a subjective opinion that that’s the only one that matters.

GC: Not the resolution though. Not in any manner close to the difference a good frame rate makes.

PS: Don’t get me wrong. I love frame rate. I love Ori, it’s one of the reasons I love playing Forza Motorsport. But you have to go back to what you said before: most people. What frame rate does Minecraft run at?

GC: I know, but if the frame rate is below what it needs to be – and it does vary for different games – they do notice. They might not identify the problem, but they know something’s wrong.

PS: Some people do. Some people just want to have fun playing Lego Batman.

GC: You could teach them! Show them: this is the difference it makes! Xbox One X alone is bringing this to you!

PS: [laughs] You have a cause, I love it! I was not expecting you to go from, ‘I don’t care about HDR10 vs. Dolby Vision but I care about 60fps! [laughs]

PS: But you’re right, this console will make it more possible for developers to drive the resolution and frame rate consistency than any other console on the market.

GC: I would love to see 60fps mandated as a standard…

PS: I will tell you, as someone that’s run a platform now for a while, mandating gameplay decisions is a bad place for a platform holder to go in. Developers are completely incentivised to give you the best experience they can. We can both agree on that. So if they think it’s 60fps and that’s gonna help them, in terms of selling more copies of the game, they’re gonna be all in. Not everybody understands what 60fps vs. 30fps means. They’re not all as technical as you are.

Personally I don't know what the fuss over 60fps is, then again I'm not an avid a gamer as I used to be. If it looks nice and sparkly that's good enough for me.

If he (or anyone really) played a FPS on a PC that is 60+ fps, he wouldn't ask that silly question.

It's all just coming apart. Perhaps the real lesson here is, don't start a year-long hype train for something unless you are damn sure it will deliver. Bonus points for not chinning your way on belly calling the competition "fake" by omission.

I don't agree with him often, but I agree with him on this. I don't play FPS games often and thus, 60fps doesn't really matter to me. I'm playing to have fun and so long as the game is running at a solid 30fps, I'm plenty happy with that.

Fair enough but XB1X is marketed towards enthusiast gamers who care about performance a lot. Casual gamers who are good with 30 fps is not their target.

I don't know why Phil Spencer gets so much shit. (well I do, but whatever) Say what you want about the Xbox, every interview I've read or heard him give, he's shown himself to be pretty chill and wants to do what's right by his brand AND the industry as a whole. I'm sure he knows the importance of frame-rate and is just having fun with these dudes. He gave a pretty good interview last night on Giant Bomb). I think he's pretty sincere.

Phil is so full of shit. No wonder he has 700h in Destiny. I don't get it, he's supposed to be a 'gamer', but he asks dumb questions like a CoD dudebrah would. 1080p/60fps in every game would've been so much better than his upscaled 4k/30fps.

But he's right, console gamers largely don't care about 60 fps as they also don't care about the difference between native 4k and checkerboard 4k. I agree. Devs are never going to target 60fps on console anyway. It depends on what type of game they are trying to make.

Well, no one can accuse you of accurate judgement. This E3 has me feeling like a kid in a candy store. MS just helped me budget $500 more for my gaming PC rebuild. The difference between a Ryzen and Threadripper build ;) Enjoy your jaguar, peasant.

Most important thing I'll be enjoying is playing my Xbox/Windows exclusives wherever I want. On the couch on my Xbox, or on the road on my laptop. I've got it all.

Same. I don't play competitive FPS, racing sims, and fighters on a regular basis -- so it's not something that I consider. And to his point, most people don't either.

If devs do not want to use the power to give 1080p 60fps with the X1X, its not his fault. Amazing how 1080p was such a big deal with X1 coming in below it and there was no mention of frame rate then. Now? Its the be all end all. Spare me.
