Phil Spencer: Support for Japanese Pubs/JRPGs on MS E3 Stage

In a twitter response about JRPGs on the MS E3 stage, he claims they will be showing support for Japanese publishers

I just hope they don't try and westernize Japanese games. This is what destroyed final fantasy and knowing M$, it might happen again.

Not really looking for JRPGs these days but I don't mind the occasional one, recently got the Ys game. I would like to see more shoot emp ups personally, already lots of nice ones on XOne especially if you include some of the gems from the 360 BC catalog.

Sounds great to me. I’d love to see a Lost Odyssey 2 and/or Blue Dragon 2. I would even love to see ports of some already existing JRPG’s as well.

I don't want Japanese games, I want western games.

Honestly, I don't expect much from Japan other than checking off on porting Xbox 360 game through BC, some multiplat titles coming, maybe a new Dead Rising game announced (or news MS bought Capcom Vancouver and the Dead Rising IP), maybe follow-ups to previous Japanese XB1 games like I'd like to have seen more of D4 or Crimson Dragon (years back they toyed with remaking Panzer Dragoon games or making a Crimson Dragon RPG).

BC support could still be cool, there were some good games last gen. I'm still holding out for a Binary Domain BC additoin with an X1X patch. Never got to finish it but I'd like to see Resonance of Fate make it on BC too, want to finish that. Also, never did play Nier, was on Xbox 360 (though people always thought it was a PS3 exclusive for some reason).

But I'd be floored if they got something like a cool hand-me-down, like a definitive Persona 3/4 collection for XB1.

Anyway, I can only guess they probably bought a Persona 5 port for more money than it would ever make on Xbox.

Lets all guess what's the next japanese game that MS cancels a year from now.

I don't think MS really needs Japanese support. What they need are Western exclusives comparable to God of War, Horizon, TLOU, Uncharted in critical and commercial success.

For instance if they got games like Persona 5 on Xbone would it really increase hardware sales? Doubt it very much. But a Perfect Dark reboot that looks great and gets great reviews would definitely move systems.

Yeah, agreed. That's why I hope they don't spend too much $$ or time in trying to woo Japanese devs to Xbox. Just make it as easy as possible for them to port games to Xbox, and that's about it.

Look at the ponies scared that Xbox is going to take their games away from them. They do have the most powerful console now.

MS is shit for competition this generation and gives Sony absolutely nothing to compete against other than their own internal game studios.

Microsoft just needs to give up on the Japanese market. You tried but its over. The Japanese will not care even if they make JRPGs as we've seen last time.

What they NEED to do is try and focus on getting the European market which is a MUST. And would greatly benefit them and their American gamers. Jesus Christ get European game developers like CD Projekt. That's what they NEED to do.

Hasn't happened yet; once I see Yakuza, Persona, Mario, Zelda, NieR, etc. on Xbox, I'll believe you.

Sony already owns the best JRPGs. What's left is the crap at the bottom of the japanese fish barrel. And this crap is now coming to Xbone! Hahahahaha!!!!

Mario is exclusive to Nintendo so I don't think so. It could be Nier nothing stop Square Enix from porting it over except if they don't like making more money! lol

As much I'd love a huge selection of JRPGs on a Microsoft console like the 360 good old days.. Any JRPG is surely doomed to fail if it''s exclusive on an Xbox console.. Lost Odyssey was such a great game, but it sold like crap. That game could of went on to make sequels if they had put it on the PS. An Sakagutchi wouldn't be stuck wasting away his talent and his life creating shitty mobile phone games.

Except if they don't like LOSING money, that is... the game won't sell on X1, be real... I don't even think SE will be able to make enough money to recover the porting costs, honestly.

I agree with this. I tell people that certain platforms need to focus on certain exclusives. Xbox needs to focus on Western exclusives and maybe expand with a few Japanese games that appeal to a Western Audience.

@xhawk27: they'd probably lose money on a Nier port. Doubt it moves more than 25k units on Xbox.
