Phil Spencer Says Delaying Starfield Into 2023 Was The "Right Thing To Do"

Spencer explained he wants Starfield to have the smoothest launch possible when it takes off next year on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

November has been a busy month for game releases, and if Bethesda had pushed ahead with its Starfield plans, the month would have been even busier with the release of Starfield. The game, alongside Arkane's Redfall, were eventually delayed into 2023, and according to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, that was the right decision to make.

"We have experience shipping games too early, but in hindsight when you look at a game like Starfield, which has taken so long and so much investment in new IP from the team, the decision to give the team the time to build the game that they feel they should be building is just the right thing to do," Spencer said to The Verge.

According to Spencer, Microsoft wanted to make certain that Bethesda and Arkane could deliver the best games possible, as Starfield and Redfall will be the first true Xbox console-exclusive releases following the $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax. "I just wanted to make sure those teams felt that they had the support they could get from Xbox. Maybe feel some of the benefit of being part of a larger organization that has other revenue streams and other things going on that could be helpful."

Spencer had a few other interesting stories to share during his appearance on The Verge's podcast, as he once again commented on Call of Duty's future on PlayStation and spoke about how the Activision Blizzard acquisition is focused on mobile games like Candy Crush. In a previous interview, Spencer mentioned how Starfield won't feel like a big-budget Skyrim in space, although fans can expect classic Bethesda gameplay elements such as dialogue options.

Starfield and vampire-hunting game Redfall are currently scheduled to launch in the first half of 2023, and while they will be console-exclusive to Xbox Series X|S, you will also be able to play them on PC.

Very hyped for this game. Plan on having an Xbox Series X all ready to play this game when it launches. Going to be a great time.

Based on that demo, yes it was. No more broken releases!

I'm glad they at least showed footage to dissuade me from being excited for it. Looked very stiff and Bethesda being up to their old tricks with the engine and terrible enemy AI.

Anything can happen but I don't have hopes for Starfield.

Fantastic, this game is going to be the most amazing game ever. And it's good that MS is giving the team the support they need to pull out a real banger.

No shit, it looked like ass. Didn't stop you guys from being excited though, so I'm not sure it truly is the best desicion if making money was their main goal.

@Litchie: As someone who enjoyed most Bethesda junky releases I'm excited either way. I still trust them to deliver a fantastic broken game.

The game ran at no more than 27fps. Looking at Halo Infinite, what makes you think that delaying it will change anything?

Good call. If it wasn't ready then it wasn't ready. Don't want another Halo infinite fiasco.

This is the first game from MS in a long time that has me interested. Even if it is "just" elder scrolls in space...it's frickin Elder scrolls in Space! Sound great.

I just hope there are no nasty strings attached. I just want a strong single player game with a 1 time up front payment and future payments for any proper expansions. No services. no Tacked on online nonsense...no messin (i havent actually followed the games development so i have no idea what they are doing :S).

I'd be genuinely surprised if it did. I see this being a holiday release.

Hard to argue with this comment, that is for sure. It's has been way too long. If they delay any of their 2023 games to 2024, it's time to upright the sinking ship.

And they won't admit it until we're in the first half of 2023. As of late, i've been noticing that MS yearly library is nothing but an illusion. Everything is being delayed even when they've been assuring us that the game is guaranteed to launch, OR the game comes out, and its way worse than what they made us believe.

When I see these threads about Phil, I remember that he only has his job because he was the only guy who didn't quit after the Xbox one failure last gen, so ms just gave him the job.

This game is gonna be the next Cyberpunk. Im calling it now.

Bethesda has only ever been good at two things and two things only: Creating a decent open world and having strong mod support. Other than that, they suck at writing stories, crafting strong characters, making strong quest design, and implementing strong RPG mechanics.

I don't think this is gonna be a Cyberpunk level disaster or even a bad game ultimately. I think it's just gonna be an average game with a so-so story and overly familiar mechanics if you're a fan of the Fallout series. The biggest gripe is gonna be there's a lot to explore but nothing overly worth finding off the beaten path along with uninspired shooting mechanics which sorely needs a VATS like system to assist with aiming but the brain dead AI is easy enough to pick off once you've got powerful enough weapons.

I'm also sure there's gonna be bugs galore but nothing game breaking, impeding progress, or garbage performance like we saw with Cyberpunk. Dunkey will make a killer 8 minute where he blasts Microsoft releasing a buggy mess in 2023 and they should do better.

They can delay it till 2043 and its likely to be still riddled with bugs on release. Its a Bethesda game.

Nah. Bethesda's games have always been playable to me. Bad, but playable. CP2077 was flat out broken.

How these cows have forgotten that PlayStation had no new games for Christmas 2021 - all their holiday releases were delayed to 2022, Including God of War: Ragnarok (which was delayed a full year).

But, we're all just supposed to forget about that...

Don't get why people have a problem with games getting delayed. It'd better than being released half baked.
