Japanese Famitsu readers vote their favorite RPGs of all time. While some results are expected, some might surprise you.

The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu included the results of a survey that asked the popular Japanese magazine’s readers to vote for their favorite RPG of all time.

The survey gathered 2,295 votes, 56% from males, 43% from females (1% didn’t specify their gender). 9% of votes were in their teen years, 36% in their twenties, 37% in their thirties, 16% in their forties, and 1% in their fifties, with an additional 1% that did not identify their age. Voting was done between June 22nd and June 28th.

Like topramen said, Persona and Nier are still in the honeymoon phase. And aside from that, that's not a large amount of people. 10,000 votes or more have yielded more accurate results.

Surprised to see a non japanese game on the list

The only thing about the list that is surprising is that Witcher is even on it.

Fake News. Polls cannot be trusted ever since Donald Trump won despite some polls saying he has a 90% chance to lose. Alternative facts say that Wizardry 8, Ultima 7 and Mount and Blade: Warband are the best RPGs ever made. Nobody Cares. Lolfamitsu. These RPG fans just have shit taste. Everyone I know, has no regard for any of those top 10 games... and my anecdotes > statistical data.

Am I doing it right? Am I embracing this new age of idiocy? :P

Joking aside, that is a pretty interesting list. Persona 3 > Persona 4 Golden. Chrono Trigger not in the top 2. 2 Drakengard games in the top 10. Final Fantasy VIII being there, despite the shitty reception in the west.

I have still yet to try the Persona series.

I am going to start with Persona 3 FEZ and then hopefully move on to Persona 4, and finally Persona 5 early next year.

I'm also playing Shin Megami Tensei IV at the moment and I am enjoying it. My only real experience with SMT/Persona was with Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. I liked that game.

If you liked Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, you should like Persona. Hell, some people jokingly call that game Persona: Fire Emblem Edition

@Maroxad: That's what I've come to understand about the game too.

That's odd though because it started out as Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem and yet somehow ended up having more in common with Persona. Really liking Shin Megami Tensei IV so far. It has many things in common with the battle system of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. I like the type weaknesses that give you an extra turn, the bartering with demons and the fusion system.

Truly shocking, figured they would have picked ME:A or TW3 fo sho. :P

It's always interesting to see how big Dragon Quest is in Japan, particularly the Famicom iterations. I've read III and IV are incredibly ambitious, but 8 bit RPGs have always frightened me a little, so, I haven't really given them a try. 16 bit is the sweet spot for me.

To be honest, I recommend P3P instead of FES. FES has after story that is just dungeon crawling so not that really fun. P3P lacks 3D environment in daily life part of the game, but honestly you aren't missing much when you just use shortcuts in the end for even P4 and P5. P3P does however have pretty much the carbon copy of the P4's battle system, which makes the game hella more playable. Ability to choose female main character is added bonus.

And while tasteless idiots would not agree, P4G is just better way to enjoy P4. So my advice is get Vita, get P3P and P4G on it, then go play P5.

Of course, you can just go play SMT3 Nocturne

@funsohng: I'm not buying either a PS Vita or PSP. :P

I have some interest in a PSP for the Monster Hunter goodness but I have no interest in a Vita. I'll happily play the PS2 version of Persona 4. :)

FFXV is not better than FFX imo. Also Persona 3 should probably be higher. I'm also kinda surprised that Chrono Cross didn't make the list lol

Well I bought Vita for P4G and it was worth it. Though I did end up buying a lot more games for it down the line. Vita should be really cheap now + I think it is Vita TV compatible, so you can look for that as well.

@funsohng: Agreed. P3P is better than Persona 3 FES imo because you can control your whole party. It helps because the game can be difficult af at times. The addition of a female protagonist is also a good addition because it gives you an essentially different story and allows you to change how things turned out in your first playthrough. And Persona 4 Golden shits all over vanilla P4 which makes it completely worth it to at least get a PS TV for like $30 to play both. They're both clearly better than their predecessors.

No classical JRPG made in the last 15+ years can even lay a finger on Chrono Trigger/FF III (or VI...whatever)/Suikoden II

Well it is really good, but I'd only put it as far as among my top 5 jrpgs: Panzer Dragoon Saga, Chrono Trigger, Skies of Arcadia, Valkyria Chronicles, and Persona 5.

@jumpaction: it's a dated game with no definitive version, thanks to different big flaws in the PS2 and PSP versions.

Even with my bias aside (I hated what I played of Persona 3 Portable, nearly put me off the series. I love 4 Golden, thank God for that), it's not a series that justifies playing predecessors first or in order. Persona 4 and 5 are 9 years and 1 year old respectively, and much more warmly received. That means on top of them being in the same vein of Persona 3, they also add a much higher level of polish and modern gameplay aspects.

At the end of the day, there's only so much I can do to swing your choice (I'm not Charizard, nor do I care what you play at the end of the day), but you're absolutely doing a disservice dropping 40-70 hours into Persona 3 first when 4 and 5 exist. Plus 5 has a much higher public mindshare right now.

Nice to see FFVIII on the list, even if it is near the bottom. I thought I was the only one that likes/loves that game.

Persona 5 seems like a game I would really dig. Do I need to play any of the previous games before playing that?

Its like Final Fantasy in the sense they share themes, but the stories are self contained. You would have no trouble starting with 5

@aigis: P3 is the only one in the series I can play right now. I need to replace my PS2 controller to play P4 and I need to buy a PS4 to play P5... Well that's not true, I can play it on PS3 but I'd rather play the PS4 version. :P

If it were up to me the top 3 would all be persona games :P

FFXV probably got a bump because recent FF game, but the whole series probably would have a hard time just cause people would funnel to certain entries (*7*)

I started with 3 and loved it, also had some friends start with it too who enjoyed it. The only really big hurtle is if you enjoy the darker tone and the finicky controls. 4 is just the more accessible one, but there isnt anything that broke my enjoyment of 3.

Persona 5 is completely overrated, but Japan doesn't see its absolute idiotfuck translation. Still by far the most overrated game of 2017.
