Poll Persona 5 - overrated, underrated, or just right? (61 votes)

Overrated 34%
Underrated 10%
Just right 56%

I've been a Persona fan since Persona 4 Golden, so it's not exactly like I've been into the series for that long. But I did very much enjoy Persona 4 Golden, and while I did enjoy Persona 5, I didn't consider it as good as the former. I think the game is a little overrated. I didn't find myself liking the characters or story as much in this one. It was also a bit long. I only call it overrated because it seems to be getting a lot of hype lately, to the point where I don't remember people loving it this much when it first came out. It's still a solid game, and definitely one of the best in this gen.

What about you, SW? Is Persona 5 overrated, underrated, or just right in your opinion?

From what I've played of Persona 3 and 4, I like 5 a lot better due to the superior gameplay, dungeons, main story, music, and presentation. Overall, I rank it among my top 5 favorite games of the gen, and rpgs in general. So while I don't know if I'd consider it underrated, I do love the game a lot, and will play it for a fourth and probably fifth time if a newer version is coming out.

I liked it. Definitely something different than the norm. There's some repetitiveness to it, and lots of reading(I guess that's normal for that type of game?) but overall a good game. Overhyped by some, but for me a new experience so I went in without listening to the hype and was surprised at how well the game played out.

It looks superb, and I hope to play it someday. Really enjoyed Persona 4 way back in the PS2 days.

I love Persona games and I think Persona 5 is overrated.

This is purely from someone who been playing since ps1 so I am a bit biased. Its a great game, worthy of the scores given and newbie friendly but if you played others before, P5 doesnt have the SMT vibes of P1, P2, or P3 or amazing support cast like P4. Still, great game and worthy of the Persona name.

P5 is fucking awesome. It was damn near perfect. I would say the game wastes too many calendar days for you and I dont like any party-based RPGs where if the main character dies it's game over. You tend to baby the main guy in combat. But those two flaws aside- it's awesome. Gets my full recommend

Vastly overrated, near FFVII overrated

P5's problems with its gameplay and especially its storytelling cannot be ignored.

P5 is incredible. Also, it’s the only one with Makoto, so it wins.

I beg Floyd will suddenly start loving the game when the Switch port is announced.

@charizard1605: Not so sure if a Switch version is coming anymore, seems it's only been announced for PS4 so far.

I think the general critical opinions of it fall in line with my own. I think the gameplay is much stronger than in 3 or 4, whereas the characters are much stronger in 4, and the narrative itself is much stronger in 3. Now if only they could combine all of these elements they could blow my mind even more than they already have.

Having never played a previous Persona game, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I bought Persona 5 out of curiosity after seeing how excited everyone was and the fact it was getting loads of praise and GOTY acknowledgment. I was completely blown away by my experience with the game and is easily one of my favorite games this gen. With that said, I think the game is just right if we're saying it's an amazing game.

I don't like JRPG's and have played very few in my time as a gamer, but I gave P5 a try and I enjoyed it from what I played of it.

My only dislike was it took forever to finally get going. I put in over 12 hours and the game was still in tutorial mode, sometimes I can only game for 2 hours at a time and with P5 2 hours isn't enough time to really make any worth while progress. So I would always feel unaccomplished after playing.

persona 5 is my first persona game and it didnt really grab me to be honest. i didnt really enjoy the whole real life aspect of the game and nothing really compelled me to keep playing.

the battle system is good though. the visual style is also excellent. it also has some great music.

TBH, I enjoyed the earlier personas more than 5. I swear a third of the game is just being forced to do nothing and go to bed early because the stupid cat deems it so. I've played through game twice up to the point right after Futaba's palace only to lose interest and end up restarting the game a few months later.

I'm not Japanese so being herded from point A to B with blinders on and being told I can't do something or think for myself is not something I enjoy.

Personaly, severely overrated

Persona 4 Golden was way better as a game and Persona 3 had the better story

Persona 5 had cliched characters, repetitive gameplay, enemies being the personas was stupid imo (I prefer shadows as enemies), the music became so f*ckin anoying 60h in listening to the same exact beat every freakin time you enter battle, terrible story... yeah, I wasnt a fan

I'm betting that the people who called it overrated didn't even play it. Just like they do with everything. Judge it before playing it. And then use a YouTube video that matches their bias opinion to try to validate it.

I think it's a little overrated not by its score out of 10. But just by the hype and praise it's gotten. It's not even the best overall game in its own series. The best part of Persona 5 is that it has improved gameplay. If you gave P3 or P4 the improved gameplay, it would hands down make P5 look like a short-sighted rushed attempt job at the Persona series due to the lack of atmosphere and the weaker cast that was pretty forgettable.

  • Persona 3: best overall atmosphere
  • Persona 4: Best overall cast
  • Persona 5: Best overall gameplay

Here's to hoping Persona 5R fixes some of the cast problems-more development, more story interactions, more characters, etc.

I also think P5 would benefit from scenes being axed and reworked.

Really enjoyed it but preferred P4. Just something about it. P5 had better graphics, style, dungeons, but P4 just clicked together better. Either way, win win.

The game is amazing. Makoto alone makes it the GOTG.

Seriously, though, amazing. It deserves every bit of praise it receives. It's just about the closest thing to video game perfection I've seen in a good long while.

I'll never understand this franchise. On paper Persona should be one of my favorite franchise since it has a lot of things that I like, but I just cannot get into it. I tried 3,4 and 5, it's just not for me.

I'd say just right, gameplay wise is better and the confidant system is a great improvement over the social links, but the story became a victim of its own ambitions, overall Id say persona 3 has the best story, 4 the best cast and 5 the best gameplay, but considering everything I'd say 4/Golden were better games by the time of their release.

It was 30 hours too long imo.... its gameplay got stale, doing chores every day got stale... the ending areas were just tedious.

Was a decent game, that outstayed it's welcome..... huge pacing problems.

I really liked playing Persona 4 on the Vita a couple years ago but i just couldn't handle the speech bubbles in Persona 5 while playing on a home console/TV. I couldn't get past the intro, i think i was in the castle.

I'd say it built on the strengths of P4G and P3P pretty damn well, and is rated just right. It's by no means perfect, but they actually addressed the lack of dungeon variety, and I really enjoy the characters/music/art-style.
